2024 Draft Thread

Were the Brisbane Lions academy players in the futures game any good? They seemed to have several in there.
Yes Annable is one for sure. They don’t need a recruitment team they just have a production line of talent on tap each year it seems.

So next year they'll have more points they'll have to negotiate for. Seems they are gonna have to miss out out somewhere.

Let's put it this way.

I read the article on the AFL website to see which players were potential recruits for us next year, and just about every player that supposedly played well was either linked to the GC or Brisbane academies .

I wouldn't trust us selectioning a academy kid from another state.
Our record is bad,
Bids on Hipwood and then selecting Sansom

Nah. A bunch of them that played well eg Dalton, Burton, Cumming, Greeves etc aren't academy players. There'll be a bunch of top end non academy players next year.

That's good to hear.

I didn't watch the game but the article mentioned 'Brisbane academy this, GC academy that'.

Anyone think we should not bid on Ashcroft at number 1 after big Brother won the Norm Smith.
Worst case result for Tige's a couple of weeks ago we looked to be. dealing for pick 14 now it is pick 18/23 :(
*handshake*. It'll be cheaper to get & it should be a good deal for us still

Doesn’t the lower pick mean Brisbane now have a greater need to trade for points?
Yep, but now they've got even less of value to trade with than a few weeks ago. Unless they've got a player to trade with, they'll wipe out both this years and next years entire draft hands trying to scrape up enough points to get Ashcroft and Marshall.

If as some of the meedjia is reporting most clubs want to hang onto their early picks to at least get some talent out of this years draft Brisvegas might struggle big time to get a deal done.
Tigers must bid at pick 1 n make Brisvegas bleed. Happy if we get Ashcroft n then maybe have to sell him to Brisvegas after a few years so he can join his brother.

Being cheap doesnt matter as we gotta spend the points.
What it can mean is we have more buying power for their f1
We still might need to spend a heap of our points to get some of our other trades done for suitable returns.
We might need to keep some of those picks points to be able to fill our draft hand up depending on how deep we dig into our list this year.
We might need to keep some points to trade for future picks from other clubs in the comp.

Lots of different scenarios to unfold yet, locking everything into just Brisvegas is daft.

Just won the flag.
They might be willing just to go into deficit over the next few drafts.Still getting the best kid in this years draft & and good one later on.
Would they care?

Questions for anyone who has the junior fo and points thing sorted in their heads:

Is Ashcroft good enough that we shouldn't trade junk picks to Brisbane so they have a harder time matching a bid?

Related, if Brisbane don't trade picks from this point, and we bid on Ashcroft, would they be able to match our pick 1?

Also, Would it be extremely poor form to trade them junk picks for an earlier one, then bid on Ashcroft anyway?

Another club will surely make an offer of some sort if we don't

I don't know a lot about this stuff Coburg but on your last point I would have thought that this would be part of the deal. If we did a points deal with Brisbane and got a better deal on the basis of not bidding on Ashcroft then to turn around and bid would mean we wouldn't be trusted in deals by any club, very poor form.
If we did a points deal and gave no guarantees then it's fair game but the fact that we can provide them with points by not bidding gives us an enormous advantage over any other club which to me means that we should be after their F1.
If we bid then they can match of course and would do so.
If we don't do a deal Brisbane is hurt by it but that benefits the other 16 clubs as well as us, we should look after RFC as number 1. The way I see it is do the deal and get as much benefit as we can out of it because although Brisbane gains so do we and the other clubs don't.

Rates easily as pick 1 this year, so personally not real enamored of helping the reigning premiers / back to back grand finalists add even more premium quality to their list.

Only by going into deficit for next years draft. They'd pretty much wipe out all this years n next years as well to get both Ashcroft and Marshall.

Nah, of course not. They're one of the opposition, plus reigning premiers. Gotta pay the piper if they want to dance with the best kid in the draft.

Firstly, there's not a lot of clubs that have the spare points capacity to do a deal that would help Brisvegas.
Secondly, most clubs want to hang on to their own early draft picks to access what's seemingly a very deep draft.
Thirdly, as DuD Delist mentioned a few posts ago. They've just won the flag, what would they care if they blew out this year and next years draft hands to get this years best kid plus another ranked around top 20??? Still a premium return for pretty much junk picks.
They're probably gunna have to do this anyway to scrounge up enough points value, or trade out one of their current players for the points.

We don’t have to keep picks to filll our list you get more picks at end of draft if you have open list spots

And that ladies and gentlemen is why you take the Raynor type at pick 1...
The guy that can stand up and win you a final or a grand final...
The 2 best players in this year's GF were ball winning mids. Consistent ball winning mids. Short, centre square playing, clearance winning, consistent, ball winning mids.

If only there was an obvious kid that fits that criteria for us to take at pick 1 this year.
