2024 Draft Thread

Love reading this thread. However read one post that says Player X is the one. Next post says player X does not quite measure up but players A,B,C do. The next post pans Players B and C. And around we go

Need to get the finals done and dusted so we can get onto the important stuff
yeah the thread is awesome for those of us who are plodders when it comes to juniors but one thing I am now 100% sure of is that there will definitely not be agreement that we have picked the right players. :)

That's fine but the reality is we won't know for a few years anyway.

Still not convinced with Smith. No hurt factor.
My view with players like him is that every team needs one or two who are accumulaters and just get the pill. The key is having players around him who have the hurt factor.
We need to pick with a balance of both.

No doubt he’ll be a very good player but I just don’t think he’s top ten material.

I’m no expert but he has tricks from what I have seen that make him a very high pick. He turns on a dime and has a jink one way and he goes the other that very few have.
I don’t know if he is number 1 but to me he is very good from the footage I’ve watched.

you've seen him live and I havnt so I respect that.

He appears to have the athleticism.

do you reckon his pick and choose work rate could explain why he barely touched the ball for 3/4 in that clip above, and then kicked 7 in a quarter and a bit, late?

i.e. could he learn whats required?

its not uncommon for talls to not grasp what they need to do with their gifts until they are >22?

where do you have the KPF's ranked against each other currently?
Sims to me is like Peter Wright ,can really impact a game at times with his marking and goal kicking, but is not consistent ,and doesn't get involved enough,l reckon lacks a bit of hardness.
I have Jack Whitlock and Jonty Faull as my 2 top kp forwards ,Armstrong lm not sure about ,if he can really improve his involvement in general play ,he could be good ,Shanahan l won't talk about ,like l have posted before his academy game really stuck in my head ,it was *smile* weak ,he looked really timid .
Quite a few medium talls as well,Hynes ,Josh Murphy ,Langford ,Day Wicks, etc etc .

Would love to see a bit of Sam Walsh finesse of Zac Butters mongrel about him.In saying that if were to pick him I hope he proves me wrong and has a fabulous career.

He just finds the ball with ease, is the main architect in forward chains for his team and brings others into the game.

Yep just a good ordinary player. Dime a dozen.

All opinions, but don't be concerned with Jagga's mongrel. He's a courageous and determined little bugger who puts his head over it every time.

So you would be happy to take a Bakes type with no 1.
Jagga is a average kick ,unless it is short, does a lot of dinky handballs ,which a lot of them puts his team mates under pressure ,but it still goes on his efficiency as good,,gets bustled out the way in hard contests easily ,he is lucky he has elite endurance ,because if he didn't you would be looking at a top 20 pick.

Two key differences this year.
1. We will have multiple first round picks, a lot of skin in the game. In past years it was just out of interest, this year there is extra focus.
2. The evenness and quality. Usually there are 1 to 3 players in the running for number 1. This year there are 5 or 6. And usually beyond that, I am often scratching around for players I would love to get, there might be 8 to 10, this year there's 20, probably more if I had more time. And within that, usually there are players in the frame from 5 to 15 I don't rate and would spew if we drafted (if we had a pick that is), this year there really isn't. All the players in the frame for top 25 look good. Sure some have flaws, and I prefer some over others, but there aren't really any that I would not want.

Cripps is 6 foot 5, the Bont is 6/4, there's various opinions about Liz Smillie, he's 6 foot 4, and might well be a generational player. I'd be ok if we could somehow get him him with our 2nd pick.

Is that because the number of quality players is higher, or the quality of the top players is lower?

Where would these top 5 or 6 rank alongside Harley Reid or JHF?

And if we don't develop some RUN in our game, Jagga at 1 will look pretty stupid.

there's quite a few misconceptions about Jagga Smith being propagated in here.

he's the best player in a very deep pool of talent. He is the u18 AA captain.

he isn't slow, he isn't soft, he isn't outside, he rarely turns the ball over, he doesn't get injured, his kicks go 40m to his teammates advantage, he rarely hacks a kick in hope, he finds space and delivers the ball, he kicks goals from 50m, he is a prolific ball winner, he plays selflessly and creatively, he is professional, he is driven, he is a leader.

testing will show him athletically elite

interviews will suggest a champion and a captain.

there is almost zero chance he wont be a great player at AFL level for a long time.

I really dont get it?

I totally get the variation in peoples preferences; that many would prefer FOS, Lalor or Draper. They are indeed four quite different players. I do completely understand why anyone would rank those three higher than Jagga (Ashcroft and Lombard too). I get that, although its highly unlikely, Jagga Smith could last until pick 6

but I totally dont get the disparity between what people write about Jagga, and the reality of what he achieves on a footy field, week after week, at all levels, for years

I find it really quite strange? its like a reverse Archie Roberts-effect

is it supporter fear of failure? is it because he is built a bit like a young Shane Edwards?

(btw, he plays a fair bit like an old Shane Edwards)
