2024 Draft Thread

Yeah, I mentioned him earlier this year, I thought he’d go in the MSD but he got injured.

“This George Grey will go in the MSD, AFL clubs seem to love the “bolter” who comes from nowhere. Saw him in the state game v SA, didn’t really stand out but AFL clubs are looking deeper than starring in a state game or state league footy.”
Worked with young George for a while back in 2020 & 2021. I think he would be about 22 or 23 now? He is a terrific young fella, had a good work ethic. Was no privileged kid. He dealt with a few injuries and as a small forward he was behind the other 2 on the pecking order at Casey/Melb.

Seems to have blossomed behind the ball at Frankston, although playing HBF is the easiest role in football to look good at. But he has improved every year and is playing his best ever footy.

No mate ,who does he replace? ,,maybe Dow if he gets de listed .
I am tipping if he got Dow's game time this year he would get more possessions in a quarter than Dow did for a game and he would not have been dropped.

Can you explain your thinking - how at his age he is at peak development? Cause I am struggling to understand that statement. I guy i went to school with is the same height and weight now as when he was in Year 8. I always thought of him as this huge monster. He was a bit of a protector in high school even at the age of 14. No one messed with him. Saw a photo of him recently and he looks small, he would be no more than 5'9. No doubt he had peak development at 14. But I do not see peak developmenbt when I look at Smith. I see an elite ball winner (likely the best junior ball winner in Aust?) with scope for improvement.

Why wouldn't he get better? Every level he has played at he has excelled. Why won't he get fitter/stronger?
Umm. Pretty sure I said " nearer " his peak development compared to other kids, not already at, there is a difference. Simple thing is that he's already a few months ( yes teen years ) older than some of the other 1 pick contenders, virtually a year older than Ashcroft. He's also spent pretty much all this year concentrating exclusively on his footy fitness and skills, unlike the other youngsters who were doing their schooling n *smile*. He's also a very lean and wiry kid so probably not gunna put on much in the way of physical size nor trim off any teenage puppy fat as most youngsters generally do during their first few years.
They're only incremental factors when taken in isolation, but put them together n I reckon it's a valid thought process. Stepping up to professional sporting training and playing levels, plus simple maturing obviously means he'll still get fitter n stronger. But perhaps he'll only improve 10% over the years on his current base level, while others who haven't already done a training year such as he has done, will improve 20% over their current base. It's still a valid factor for all the club recruiters to be projecting what the player will become at 23 years of age, rather than what he already is at 18
Apart from that I have no issues about whether we pick him up at 1 or 5 or 10. He'll go somewhere early n more than likely be a bloody good player for whoever gets him.

Battle is expected to sign with the Hawks on a six-year contract through to 2031.

Didn't St Kilda supposedly increase their offer to retain battle yesterday? well played, it probably either forced Hawks to increase offer or conspiracy theorist me, deal worked with Hawthorn so that Saints trigger end of their 1st round pick compensation, (similar to what happened with Vickery).

If they do get it they will have pick 7 & 8, (thank goodness they beat Carlton and don't get 5 & 6).

From HS:
St Kilda is hopeful their increased offer to Josh Battle will help trigger first-round compensation after they handed him a last-ditch deal that was worth as much as $950,000 a season over six years.

The initial Hawthorn offer over six years was not enough to trigger first-round compensation for St Kilda given it did not reach $950,000 a year.

But St Kilda is optimistic that Battle would only have moved to Hawthorn if they could match the deal, which would allow them to secure a pick immediately after their own first-round pick at No.7 in the draft.

It's so not. On the Eddie McGuire/Jimmy Barter podcast this week, Eddie launches into it and how fragile the games banks on media right money growing (that is drying up actually) and how if that slows, the industry will crumble. And Jimmy Bartel talks of how he wants to be in a club and works his way into being a club CEO. Again, I would have him at Richmond in a heartbeat.

The AFL lacks innovation. Particularly in recruitment.
You couldn’t count the number of times Dillon said “broadcasters” the other night on 360

So Dawks increased their initial offer by $200,000 a season over 6 years so Saints can get a group 1 compo pick
Interesting manipulation of AFL draft

Yeah probably would ,but it's all about how you use them .
I remember a player for the Rebels Nik Peters who use to get 30 plus possessions most weeks ,between 2005-10, thats when it was a bit harder to get possies ,and football wasn't as quick ,his weakness was his kicking ,and used to handball more than he kicked,,he never got drafted ,and ended up a premiership player in the VFL.

Now l think Jagga is a lot better than Peters, but not for a first pick or in the top 3 for me .

Is dam.battle going to drop our picks down, and have they tweaked the offers to get a pick after their own.

FOS makes me think of Darcy Wilson (big fan)

is it more than the physical similarity?

Well said. Not sure why people are looking for reasons to pot Jagga. Saying he has reached peak development could be said about all elite junior players.

Does anyone else get the feeling that we are the worst club in the league at manipulating the system and trading in draft picks?
Only time we’ve ever come out in front was last year with our picks to eventually land McCauliff. Other than that we’ve been inactive and passive. It’s why I strongly believe we’ve been stuck with mediocre picks since 2020 ( Other than pick 6 in 2021 although we should have bundled picks together to get lower in the draft )

I think that is a reasonable take. One thing I reckon we have prided ourselves on is getting to win/win on trades - the theory being we have to negotiate fairly with these clubs because we need to have a good relationship for future negotiations. Also we also seem to bend over backwards for the players sake. Unfortunately nice guys finish last in negotiations - you have to be brutal to maximise outcomes - and I'm not sure anyone would call Richmond brutal. The only thing we seem happy to do is bid on players which pisses some clubs off - but I think that is reasonable because we actually would take them with the pick we bid on - we are not playing funny buggas.

Nah don’t think so

We screwed nth for ccj did the Same to port for saldo and screwed the system to get the pick for Vickery for shai

Swings and roundabouts

This year will be very important though and in many ways go a way to define Blair’s tenure

He has build a premiership list before he needs to do it again .

In Blair we trust
