2023 Women's World Cup

Great atmosphere. Some tried to start a Mexican wave but no one was interest. All watching the game. Felt a bit of a Richmond game booing the the ref

When I saw no Kerr warming up I didn’t think we’d win but credit to all the Matilda’s they came out fighting.

Dominant performance, led by the kids- Cooney-Cross, Fowler and Hunt.

Having a proper striker in Fowler made a big difference, and let Foord play wide.

And the forward combo of Fowler and EVE worked a treat- credit to Gustafson.

Offside call was correct, you need two players ahead of you - usually it's the goalie plus one. In this case Ellie was ahead of the keeper and only one defender is ahead of her to the goal.

Thats not the best angle- as far as i can tell the official verdict is her left foot is off-side.

The atmosphere was great last night (like Mr T- Im glad the Mexican Wave didnt get going- watch the *smile* game!), the venue is the best place to watch football in Victoria, the new screens are fantastic.
But the noise was hideous at times, and the lack of replays on the screen was disappointing- the only replays of the VAR decisions were the animated ones, and replays of goals would come well afterwards, once play had resumed.

"Ellie then illegally uses backside (she sticks it out - backs away from ball) to provide space for Fowler. "

Unless there has been a changes in rules that I have missed, I don't see how that's a foul. Not sure who Brenton Speed is but he seems like a knob.
Brenton Speed is really good. Used to a lot of the A League when Fox had the rights.

Cheers Ant; good explanation. I didn't figure the goalie into the off side consideration.

Although I thought it was only when the ball was passed to the player concerned that off side comes into play? Not correct?

Watched the replay including the press conference with the Canadian coach. Gracious, praised the Matildas, said they were better team, respected the opposition. Basically the complete opposite of a couple of AFL coaches, whose names I’m sure you can guess.

Yeah used to be that way.. but now if a player is "affecting play" in an offside position then that's also offside. In this case IMO fair decision since although there is no foul by Ellie C she's affecting play near the ball, moving towards it and blocking a defender.

Its a bit mad, but while she is in front of the defender, her trailing foot is behind- so the part of her body "in play" is on side, and the part of her body out of play is offside. But thats the rule.

What a load of horseshit from Brenton Speed. Sounds like he doesn't know the rules. There is no "pushing your arse back into another player" rule. I assume he's trying to say it was obstruction but it wasn't at all.

She probably was just offside, but the defender at the top of the screen was cose to playing her onside.

Its a tough one, as was she "active", probably I guess, but would it have changed anything, not at all.

Its a bit like the offside in the England game yesterday against Lucy Bronze in regards to those that are borderline. No doubt Bronze was offside, but when does that phase of play end, did it end before she won it back? I'd probably say the ref got that one right, but its a borderline one.

Wow, big day for the lower nations.

South Africa beat Italy to knock out both Italy and Argentina
Jamaica draw with Brazil to send the Brazilians home

Yeah, both very exciting finishes.

Im not too worried, but i got ticket to 1 of the rd of 16 games- I chose what looked liked Germany v Brazil over what looked like Sweden v Netherlands- now it looks like im going to Columbia v Jamaica, not Sweden v the US.
