2023 mid-season rookie draft

Anyone seen much of Adam D’Aloia, unlucky not to be drafted last year, has been compared to Jack Graham.

I think if your window is open, you're gonna go for mature age midseason

marlion Pickett is the benchmark. Pies, if they have a spot, would probably grab the best battle-ready ruckman available.

if your window is closed, and your list allows (half a dozen scheduled to be delisted at years end), I think you're going to grab best available 19 yo's (is it still 1 year deals?)

A lot of clubs are thinking the SSP is now diluting the mid season draft.

A lot of the best state league, bush or kids not drafted are getting taken in the pre-season ie Bradtke with us after clubs get a good look at them training.

When previously would have gone mid season.

Think 15 or so this year went SSP.

Still, there will be some decent players left no doubt.

Yep, they’re out there. There’s hundreds of players out there in the state leagues, silly to think the cupboards bare. There’s players playing around the state leagues right now who’ll be good AFL players in the future, the trick (easier said than done) is to pick them.

While there are good news stories in the likes of Pickett , we also saw players coming from outside the normal pathways , Eggmolesse-Smith ,
don't have the schooling that AFL clubs like preparation , game styles etc

But it hasn't stopped us going back to the well with Taylar Young and Bradkte

Young was cerntaily worth the punt on , Bradkte too soon to know yet

Shai's mate a chance to get picked up now?
Didn't he miss out on a spot even though he trained all pre season with us?

Not really a punt when we got him for peanuts and he was up against Narkle who came about last in all the time trials

“Some developing talls are among leading contenders to be picked in this year’s mid-season draft.

Only five clubs – Essendon, Fremantle, Hawthorn, Geelong and Western Bulldogs – have open list spots for the draft on May 31.

Other clubs have the option to open up a spot by moving long-term injured players to their “inactive” list.

Eastern Ranges ruckman Clay Tucker has been training with Hawthorn and its VFL affiliate Box Hill, as has Oakleigh Chargers forward Will Elliott.

Tucker measures 204cm tall, while Elliott stands 203cm.

Elliott is the son of former Australian Test cricketer Matthew and was a highly rated draft prospect entering last year, before he went down with a season-ending knee injury.

Another Oakleigh Chargers product pushing for a mid-season draft chance is Luke Teal. The 19-year-old has spent the past three weeks playing for Richmond’s VFL side.”

dont we have a spot with George's retirement ?

I was meaning the gamble take Bradkte now or take someone from the national draft who had played in U16's and U18's national champion ships

"CLUBS will not be able to replace a retired player at the AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft without a completed deed of release form, as the AFL tightens its inactive player rules.""

so reading between the lines we haven't agreed terms with George & hence haven't completed the said deed of release form

If we place Mate on the on long term injury list, can that free up at least one spot? Or does that not apply to cat B rookies? Dimma mentioned Tarrant is likely to return next week in the ressies, so it's seems unlikely he'll retire at this point...

There obviously wasn’t anyone who impressed us. We did have Luke Teal train on who now plays fon our VFL. No point just picking a kid for the sake of if . Bradtke showed some great signs it the first two VFL games. By your point of view, you could even say “why did we recruit young and not an u18).. we all know how Tylar has worked out thus far. Pathways aren’t the be all and end all

Couple of others earlier in the thread mentioned Narkle to which a few responses came back saying he wasn't exactly setting the world on fire in the VFL.
