2023 mid-season rookie draft

Archie May (six disposals, four marks, one goal)

"Whilst his numbers aren't huge, for a young player to come in and debut and have such an impact on the game, I thought was really pleasing. He could have easily finished with three or four goals had it not been for a couple of missed opportunities. He'll be better for the experience."

Just something about this kid that I like. Remember the first practice game v Norf and he came on and we were all asking who this bloke was. Sounds like he stood out equally in his first VFL game.

If he can kick the 3 or 4 goals that Morris is referring to in the upcoming games, I would take him.
Watch him in our practice game vs Kangas ;)
should be our first pick
just keep Dildoro away

Maybe a question on his athleticism, but Garrett McDonough is easily our best VFL player (and one of the best in the league).

His long accurate and elite kicking (and ability to find the ball) might be very handy for our backline/midfield ATM, where we are having terrible trouble bringing it out of.

26 y.o, but we could do worse ILO.

17 kicks, 12 handballs, 7 inside 50's and 2 goals 2 on the weekend.

Just on McDonough, reading the VFL Report this week he was played half forward and through the midfield, so maybe he'll be more versatile than just a HB.

Anyhoo, probably won't be looked at by us so a moot point.

It's funny, on here Rioli is lauded for his kicking and Baker is considered the scruffier of the two. Might be time to get Short back there to his original role. We've used two top 30 picks on back flankers in 2021 draft and now we are talking about pick up a 26 year old VFL flanker whose been delisted. Surely note.

Would put Banks and Brown in a really bad light and show the club doesn't think they are going to make it over the next two years. Using two picks in the top 30 in the same draft and then getting a 26 year old would be a huge black mark. Hence I'm hoping we don't do it.

Take Garrett out of it as we have differing views on his ability. That's cool.

But if the club deems them worthy talent wise, wouldn't be shy on taking small/medium backs/wings because of Banks/Brown.

Brown is only 19 and Banks turned 20 this month. Given that and injury issues, wouldn't be banking on them making it over the next 18-24 months. Pickett and Kamdyn are also both at the back end of their careers.

Especially if we can some elite kicks onto the list.

The kicking part I'm with you on. I'd actually look at replacing McIntosh with Banks ASAP.

I think the knock on him is his lack of footspeed when it comes to AFL attributes.

If Tarrant retires and we have the option to take 2 sure the club takes a small forward and another Tall ruck/forward.

I was quite take by Cam Olden's game playing in the midfield last Friday. I hope he is given more game time in the midfield, he's a handy small forward too.

Cam Olden (20 disposals, nine clearances, six tackles, one goal)

"Cam's game was absolutely outstanding. He led the team with six tackles and he tagged Carlton's Paddy Dow in the second half and kept him to one clearance for the entire second half, whilst helping himself to nine for the game. It was a big tick for Cam in his first full game as a midfielder for us."

I think we need a tall and small forward but if there are 2 draftable potentially elite talls like ————- we should pull the trigger.

Garrett McDonagh (29 disposals, seven marks, seven inside-50s, five tackles, two goals)

"It was a new position for him, he played across half-forward and through the midfield, and I thought he was a standout on the day. His ball use was outstanding, both around goals but also bringing his teammates into the game. I thought it was a really good start for him in a different position."

Handy.

I was a fan 2 years ago but very much doubt he gets a second chance at 27.

Noticed that vision of Ryan Maric in the Coats Talent League has been put up on the AFL website saying that he's in the frame for the MSD... He's 19, 193cm & 84kg. Looks to move pretty well and seems to be a good kick from the limited vision.. Looks like he has kicked 8 goals and had 2 BOG's in 3 games so far this year..

'GIPPSLAND Power forward Ryan Maric has thrust himself into the eyes of clubs as a potential mid-season rookie draft pick.

The 193cm forward nominated for last year's national draft but was overlooked, making him eligible for the mid-season intake on Wednesday, May 31.
And his performances have made him a player being assessed by clubs, with the polished kicker booting four goals in the opening round of the Coates Talent League and last weekend kicking three goals for the Power against Bendigo.

He has scored eight goals in three games in the under-18 competition and been a presence for Gippsland.
Eastern Ranges ruckman Clay Tuckerand Claremont 21-year-old tall forward Jack Buller are among the other potential mid-season hopes to have leapt into contention to start the year. – Callum Twomey'

With the mid season draft locked in for 31/05, Robbie Tarrant will have a good handle on where he's at. With the draft happening after round 11 the club too will know where they're at season wise. If Robbie chooses to retire, we will have 2 spots we can fill.

Turn our form around, before the draft, it will be interesting to see what the strategy is. An immediate fix, or pick for the future.
