2023 mid-season rookie draft

If it did it would probably been the Cats seeing they had other draft trade rules changed for them.
Apparently after George notified us of his intention to retire, we went to the AFL to see if we were allowed to replace him on our list and the AFL said no.

We were gonna put Narkle on.

30yo played 30 games in 10 years and 3 knee reconstructions
Are we mad?
Narkle is still in scope but like Naismith as well, has the interest of other clubs.

Personally I wouldn’t go with either of them.

Thank god we didn’t. We’ve got Dow playing very well in the VFL who can’t get an AFL game, and Sonsie and Ross have both been in and out of the side and playing great VFL footy, so Narkle would be no chance of getting in our AFL team. Hopefully the fact that he declined to join our VFL list means we’re off him now. Midfield depth is the least of our worries

There's 3 more games before the mid season draft, we play the Cats, Port and the Bombers. Should are strategy depend on the results of those 3 games?
Lose 2 or 3 of those games should we draft for the future, win 2 or 3 of those games should we draft for an immediate need?

I think if we are looking at Naismith it’s using the MSD for its original purpose ie bringing in a player to address a shortfall. With Nank out long term and Ivan in and out the club might think getting a mature ruckman for the rest of the season will fill a need.

#25 Archer May (Sandringham Dragons/Richmond VFL)
27/08/2004 | 199cm | Tall Forward

Perhaps one of the finds of game one, May is tied to the Sandringham Dragons but has been plying his trade with Richmond VFL. He owned his space up forward for the Young Guns, clunking a series of clean grabs and providing presence which exceeded his one-goal haul. The over-ager’s six-pointer came from a free kick, but May’s conversion rate left him wanting in a game which could have easily yielded a big bag of goals.

We are looking at Naismith pretty closely now, apparently.
The irony that Swans chose Naismith over Nankervis, which led to our trade end of 16.
Getting both while swans play Ladhams is a good laugh

Not necessarily related to this draft but in general when I look at the Essendon team it reminds me that too often clubs and supporters fall into the trap of judging players too harshly.
Essendon had Wright last year kicking over 50 goals after an underwhelming career with the suns. They now have Wiedeman playing the best footy of his career.
I think we need a kpf who can just be a back up. Sometimes a new club makes a lot of difference.
There are a few around still at other clubs playing 2nd tier footy
Himmelberg at Adelaide , Riccardi at the giants. There are probably others
Treacy at Freo (20yo now behind Luke Jackson and Amiss)
Georgiadis at Port, but did his ACL
Only Himmelberg is a free agent tho

We cant play Ryan and Miller for the rest of the season.
Having a mature age ruck might be sensible
As Craigo posted a big factor will be Soldo's foot

Why not ??

Chances are the season is shot and we get the opportunity to get games into both Ryan & Miller and really get to see what they offer and how much fast tracking we can get into them. Archie May also goes into the ruck at times and offers an emergency backup we could get games into if we decide to go that way.

I see absolutely no benefit in Naismith

Agree no to Naismith.
Think we break Ryan if we ruck him all season
