2023 mid-season rookie draft

Without actually watching a minute of this guy lol I’m really interested. We need a big key forward who can come in and hold his ground, and he’s a great size. Ollie Lord for Port today looked strong, we need someone with that body shape. Surely we can find one with pick 4 on Wednesday. Yeah he started in the reserves but he’s bagging goals in the seniors. He or Jack Buller for mine. Our current young talls can’t hold their ground and are still developing, and Jack needs another big solid body down there to help him, he’s been battling big time.IMG_1122.jpegIMG_1121.png

I fail to see this years' mid-season draft as a panacea to anything albeit it will be good to have a new face on the list

But recruiters who spoke to The Age on the condition of anonymity consistently said for weeks there was a dearth of talent available this year,

Don't know if I have any confidence in Clarke and Co. Brauer and Bradtke to name the last two he has picked.

These picks must be made with the future in mind. Do NOT draft for this year. Its done. At least try and pinch a few youngsters that have blossomed over the year.
Guarantee you we will draft another mid tall fwd and then spend the rest of the year playing down back in the 2s. Have absolute no confidence in our recruiters atm

Small forwards yes but key defenders? Not sure about that one, Rance (18), Weitering (1), Sam Taylor (28), Daniel Talia (13), Darcy Moore (F&S), Scarlett (F&S), Brennan Cox (41), Jordan Ridley (22), Harris Andrews (61). We have spent accordingly in this area with Gibcus & Balta, sometimes you get lucky with a player like Andrews but chances are you will be left with B grade option. Rookie picks great for small forwards, back flankers & rucks.

Grimes rutten Taylor young wilke Henry ect

I'd get him just for his accurate kicking alone, because *smile* we need it.

Harry Taylor? He went before Rance, Grimes a very astute pick but more a third tall, although he did fill in on occasion. Wilke not really a key back either, he's in that Luke Ryan class of rebounder, these types are the very players I was referring to when I mentioned back flanks. You would be hard pressed to get an AA centre half back outside of the main draft, Tom Lonergan probably the best example and he's what I'd consider a dour negating type rather than a playmaker. Rutten in that class as well, great picks but not necessarily the headline acts.

Key defenders in the last 4 All Aus teams are:

Steven May - Priority zone selection
Sam Taylor - Pick 28
Allir Allir - Pick 44
Harris Andrews - Pick 61
Jeremy McGovern - Rookie draft pick 44
Darcy Moore - Pick 9

Whilst only one outside the main draft, all bar two outside first round and most late.

Definitely worth speculating on.

I mentioned them in a previous post but the rookie draft is drawing a long bow. McGovern slipped my mind but I reckon if you want to roll the dice then you need to target a state leaguer. I also think McGovern is the exception to the rule, he slipped due to being an undersized ruck, diamonds like that are pretty rare. 15-30 a good range to get a 200 gamer, outside that range you have to start gambling on athletic types who need some refinement, Allir a good case study, Ratugolea another who has taken years of development. Andrews about the only one who announced himself in relatively quick time.

Hope we grab best available 19 yo.

Turn em over

Get em in, give em a crack

James Rowe is carving it up at sanfl and he is one of the few players who can hit a target within forward 50. A goal sneak and has pace.

I was shocked he was delisted in the first place as he was better than Murphy.

Best key tall forward and small forward they can find. No more half back flankers or midfielders
Bauer, Bradtke,................??? If we go down this path again it's 3 darts down.

Best available and if there's multiple options choose for need.
