Harry Taylor? He went before Rance, Grimes a very astute pick but more a third tall, although he did fill in on occasion. Wilke not really a key back either, he's in that Luke Ryan class of rebounder, these types are the very players I was referring to when I mentioned back flanks. You would be hard pressed to get an AA centre half back outside of the main draft, Tom Lonergan probably the best example and he's what I'd consider a dour negating type rather than a playmaker. Rutten in that class as well, great picks but not necessarily the headline acts.
That’s quite the success rate for what are essentially picks 70-100+.2013-2018 drafting from the rookie draft (centurians)

Rucks, small forwards & back flanks make up the lion's share of success stories.
I'm not pushing any narrative, the same would apply to picks from 50-100, PSD picks included. The club went down this path with Silvestor, Calum Moore, Garthwaite, Gourdis & Westhoff. The only time it's sort of come off was Will Thursfield, 77 games was a decent return & he was an ok footballer.i meant Taylor young .
Not sure why you are excluding pre season picks and supp list players from this analysis ?
In any case suit yourself with whatever narrative you want to push
As far as the club is concerned, I have heard them say it myself, firsthand
They have done the numbers
KPD, small fwds and rucks are the best ROI for these picks, now if you want to say Grimes is not a KPD , I don't agree.
Do you really think he's AFL level?Of our VFL players. James Trezise cleary the one for Leysy.
Suits our needs best and far higher scope than the others ILO. Hope we take him plus a small forward or a key forward (though chances of a decent one of the latter will be limited you'd think).
Read that the recruiters are saying there’s slim pickings for the MSD. There’s 43 state league clubs with over 1000 players. You can’t tell me there’s not some quality in there.

It's not been a happy hunting ground so far, Richmond's best rookie draft was exactly what I've been harping on about, Short (back flank), Lambert (state league Fothergill-Round medalist), Castangna (small forward) & Soldo (ruck).

Ruck/forwards always the best bet, Chol & Ryan fit into this category, Ladhams another hit, I think if you are dealing with a 200cm+ player the odds improve markedly. Blicavs another terrific pick, Mason Cox visionary, McInerney adaptable as well.Add Chol, Broad (pinch hit tall that can beat the best key forward in the game - Cameron), Grimes and Samson (3rd round) and it helps.
But yeah those types are typically best suited. Small (and medium) forwards are a far bigger need than defensive cover (and anywhere else for that matter) anyway.
The only problem I have with this list is that it’s not longer. Garthwaite got 5 years, Nyoun year 4 and counting, Miller year 6 and counting! We should be churning through way more players at the lower end than we have done to date.Key Position Prospects Drafted by Richmond from the 4th round onwards (2006-current)

Precisely the reason state league players are your bread & butter when it comes to rookie picks, Tyler Young fine by me, we can make a call at the end of 2024, hopefully he kicks on but if not, just move onto the next prospect. Small forwards are also unique in this regard, many play from year one and most can be assessed after a couple of seasons. Rucks are really the only players who should be getting more time, flankers similar to small forwards although probably rely on physicality a fraction more, they may require a bit more time to fill out.The only problem I have with this list is that it’s not longer. As they say, one way to increase your chances of winning the lottery is to just buy more tickets.
Another flanker???
Reminds me of Alywn Davey Snr. Happy to have him
