2023 Grand Final - Pies v Lions ... Australia Mourns!

Some observations from yesterdays great game minus that shocking advantage call.

- Collingwood are the most Richmond like side since, well, Richmond. Not sure Yze should be moving us too far away from what obviously works in the modern game. Chaos will nearly always beat control in the heat of finals.

- Those having a dig at Frampton are missing the point. In a 23 person side, not everyone needs to be an A-grader. Sometimes you just need a player that can do a job and Frampton did his job well.

- Speed kills. Collingwood’s pace and run was too much for Brisbane. We need to inject some pace back into our side if we are to contend again. In fact, I’d prioritize pace and running ability over footskills.

- Brisbane are wasting their window and are running time.
Great post. The Chaos plan is at the core at all top four clubs but the difference is clubs have enough class with kicking and pace for it not to be their only plan. At the moment we don't. And we don't have enough raw pace in the forward half, MRJ is crucial and a 50/50 chance to make it. We need to find a Bedford or Bobby Hill from another club.

Stuff I like about the 16th Coll flag.
1. Maso Cox. I like Maso. Smart guy. Amazing story.
2. Pendles. Scrupulously fair champion of the game.
3. Howe. The greatest high mark in the games history has provided ridiculous amounts of pure entertainment for many many years. Good on ya Jerm.
Stuff I dont like about the 16th Coll flag.
1. It's Coll.
2. Everybody's gonna be trying to win every second game by
Think we just found Eddie McQuire’s account on here.

Shout out to Scott Pendlebury.
Watching him turn the game in the Scum's favour in that last term & couldn't help but admire him.
Even as an old bloke still makes time stand still.
Very special footballer & a genuine joy to watch regardless of the colours he wears.
Champion player.
My favourite non- Tig. Star, makes time stand still, makes the game slow down, wonderful kick, just puts it into space. Nothing has changed, still stands up in crucial times. What I would give for a young Pendles in our ranks.

Looks like he may have played basketball before, just a hunch.

What are the AFL Gunna do for half time entertainment when KISS, ACDC, Tom Jones, Meatloaf (oh right.. ), Crowded House, Kylie, John Farnham, Daryl Braithwaite , Mark Seymour, Barnesy Chris Isaac and every other artist from the 70s and 80s are no longer with us?
The Stones will still be going.

What a season!

I worked out about ten weeks ago that the top 3 teams were, in order, the biggest chokers of the last 60 years, the biggest chokers of the last 25 years and the biggest chokers on the MCG in the last five years.

I then speculated that this would guarantee that someone else would win the flag. All an ambitious team had to do was join those three in the top 4.

First, I thought it might be Geelong. Nah, they choked. Then St Kilda gave us all a laugh for an extended period. Essendon choked out early, finding even the lofty heights of ninth to be way too dizzying.

Then I noticed Carlton were getting it right and they might just do it. Nah, they choked twice, missing the top 4 AND coughing up a five goal lead to Brisbane.

Precociously-talented Melbourne sneaked in to the last spot in the top 4. So what did they do? Of course, they choked twice. They even did it in the time-honoured style of a skinny 19 year old Hungarian blonde coming up against Serena Williams in the first round at Wimbledon. Straight sets.

GWS gave themselves a chance but they were never ready to do it this year. Too many front runners with a lifetime of learned behaviours to forget. Sydney made finals, but just because the AFL wants, doesn’t make it so.

Port Adelaide and Brisbane didn’t disappoint. Every one knew Port would capitulate in straight sets too. Both played out their arcs perfectly.

How fitting that Collingwood won in the Year of the Choker.

Disappointed in that I felt Brisbane played it safe. Didn’t really go for the win and attack with purpose and allowed Collingwood to play their own game. Far too many easy uncontested possessions and lack of creativity in the coaches box.

Yes you could argue that the game was close so why change anything but in the end I feel this was the downfall for them as much as having several players who barely fired a shot.

I did enjoy GF stalwart Mike Brady singing Up There Cazaly & changing the lyrics for Barassi too. Still in fine voice the old boy. Hope he can keep going for a long time yet.
KISS too were much better than I expected them to be in the daytime. Credit to them for that show considering they filled in. Was very entertaining.

This Frampton fallacy is going to grow legs to sugarcoat how embarrassing he was; he was down right diabolical and didn't do his job at all. Andrews played well and the Pies were a forward short.
Yeh, Andrews one of the better players. And Frampton dropped everything. If all their players were beaten by their direct opponent like Frampton was it would have been a shellacking. He had zero influence on the win.

TBS he has a GF winners medal!

I hate Collingwood

But they were the better team in the GF by some margin. Better looks, cleaner chains, had the Lions under pressure all day.

Collingwood’s defensive setup is out of this world. Certainly some Richmond IP in there, but refined and evolved. The way they transition the ball is also constantly testing opposition structures and making the most of a workmanlike forward line.

Collingwood have been the best team all year, all finals and thoroughly deserved the premiership cup.

To reiterate - I hate Collingwood. But they are objectively great. Takes the edge off my disappointment.

As much as we are crying out for a goal kicking small forward , there is one star small forward I reckon is everything Richmond men are not and thats Charlie Cameron , never seen a more selfish footballer who blames his teammates more then him, he’s also pretty blood good and crying poor with the umpires .

He's now got two insipid GF performances to live down.

Some thing to do with a certain Mr Leppitsch perhaps…. Starting to become a background cup whisperer this bloke…

Mark Seymour didn't look like he'd aged a day, either.

List management decision's can make or break a club
Brisbane lost the flag yesterday all because they made a fateful decision 7-8 years ago.
When they traded pick 5 (Degoey) and threw in the steak knives (Crisp) for Dayne Beams.
Degoey at full flight is unstoppable and Crisp is one of the most under rated players in the AFL.
He has been unbelievably good for Collingwood.
The 2 of them kicked 4 goals yesterday.

**special mention to the Essendon football club Mr Dodoro played hard ball and wasn't prepared to give up a 2nd rounder (pick 26 or 27) for Bobby Hill. Collingwood swooped a year later taking the kid for a swap of late picks 40+ and this year's 2nd rounder which stands at pick 39 today.

It is soooo important you get your in-house stuff working otherwise you will be like stkilda constantly making mistakes.
Hannebury, Lovett, Carlisle, Jones,

They preach about being good people and all evolved and all that, but showed their true colours when they left some poor little auskickers hanging at medal presentation. Not one single Richmond player ignored a kid in all 3 premierships, it’s not that hard.
