2023 Draft Thread.

Interesting to see in the latest ESPN draft rankings (no longer done by that self-promoting dope Doerre) that a couple who have fans here are rated higher than elsewhere: namely Bengal and my boy George Stevens at 14 and Snake and Ezy's lads Schoey at 15 and Caiden Cleary at 21. No Charlie Edwards, Freijah, Simpson, Morris, Lloyd or Moir in the top 30 has me thinking this draft might have more depth than is credited, and getting another pick around 30 would be a good idea.

Good Coast could keep taking numerous top 20 picks,no matter how they finish on the ladder, this isn't supposed to be able to happen, this shows the grubby unfair draft system.

What about Michael Rudd? Third tall size (192cm) and apparently a decent tank. Kicked a few goals in the Champs as well.
I don't think he was invited to the combine, that probably indicates rookie or undrafted, he's another undersized key forward who perhaps doesn't possess the explosiveness needed to pull off the role.

Just scanning over this year's pool, I think the value probably lies in the ruck/forward area, there's a few likely types like Reid, Green & Edwards, I think it would be sensible to target one player from this group.

Or it’s that shallow no one can agree on top 30.

It's a strange draft, many players haven't hit their ceiling which is largely due to the high percentage of 200cm players in the pool, the two pockets of potential value would be the talls and the small forwards - Moir, Collard & Callianan. Targeting one tall and one small forward seems like a reasonable approach and addresses some holes in the list.

If he goes early second round, youde expect it would be crows and i'd wiff a rat.

I see him as a bit Jed Hagan, who was AA 2017-2022, and SANFL ressies in 2023.

I was super bullish on Hagan, but very wrong.

hagan clearly peaked as a 17 yo and went AA at 18 on reputation.

Not even Moirs reputation could get him any kudos in his draft year.

But, yeah, weve taken worse punts
just looking at Hagan, I still reckon he's draftable, I would take the punt with a rookie pick.

Schoey has a left boot like Luke Hodge, and he's a big lump of a lad, but does he win enough of his own ball? And if not, is he quick enough to be an outside player? Could you turn him into a CHB? He's not the best overhead from what I've seen but you can improve that. Could you turn him into a Steven May?
I’d be looking at his competitiveness in the air first and foremost. Does he attack the ball in flight or lead hard at the ball carrier?
Don’t need another Ben Miller

Yeah I'd be fine with that, its the kind of draft that your recruiting team gets a pass on with the picks we have.

I kept half an eye on him in sanfl and didnt think he was setting the world on fire.

The last time i saw him live (u16), he looked like a top 10.

Had competitiveness in spades, and great workrate and great overhead - quite a bit of Bakes about him.

So yeah I would be excited if tigers took him cheap

I'm thinking a bit more laterally, along the lines of Jake King, but you could also train him up as a back pocket, that's still an important position. He's still young, turns 19 next week, AA last year, solid bet for a rookie slot.

No doubt hes a footballer - but he is a 176 footballer

But i agree - take a punt

Last punt like that we found a captain

The height can make it more difficult but not impossible, Rory Laird is 178cm, Jake King the same. I wouldn't be overly concerned about 2cm for those types of roles. I would be interested to see his running numbers after a year in the seniors, that's the key factor I think.

I reckon that as well. This years kids missed a stack of crucial development years at 15 and 16.

I think it affected the clubs veiw of them moreso than the kids footy?

the soft cap cuts.
