2023 Draft Thread.

If we are going to go down the KP size player we best get one that plays that role. Its all well and good being a long kick but thats no where near enough as a trait to make it in the top grade. Red flags everywhere with this player. I would rather take a punt on Morris who represents a skill set translatable to AFL.
Ok I take your point on AS, and I'm not against LM, I'm warming to him, but to play the devils advocat, he has a touch of the Cleveland Steamers about him IMO. Very good at one thing, its a very good thing to be good at, but still, and he's not KF size.

Sicily is actually a really good yardstick given he started life as a forward, growth is always possible once in the system.

It might be a yardstick to aim for, but he doesn't play like Siciliy. From relatively recent drafts, maybe someone like Kade Kolodjshnij, just he isn't going top 5.

Massive massive pass on Stevens as well for Leysy.

Unless we think he's going to surpass Taranto/Hopper, which given the investment is unlikely.

Even then, the game is moving away from centre square midfielders who can't break a line.

It's not a style of player we've paid much credence to in drafts for a long time, so suspect we're not interested anyway.

Balta has the exact same trait re: long kicking etc. But how many times is this actually executed in a game? Both Balta and Schoenmaker possess similar body sizes. Difference is Balta loves the contest. Balta was showing this in his draft year. You cant teach that unfortunately.
I basically agree, but AS is next level in terms of accuracy along with the range, but that is at junior level. But yeah, you've convinced me, and the fact we already have Noah's long bombs seals it.

Hopefull Roberts, Shoenmaker, Steven go next 3 picks, then the world is our oysters kilpatrick

My point is Sicily didn't play like Sicily in his draft year either, he was developed into the player he is today.

What was Cleve's one thing? Picking up?

Ha ha. I was jesting, but essentially they are/ were both lead-up mid sized fwds. I like Morris much more, not that I saw Cleve in jnrs, and his CMs are trmendous.

I have concerns about LM's agility and size, but he is such a good mark I'm happy to take him and see how we go.

I wouldn't necessarily be against Roberts. I like him as that rebounding defender, but we do have a fair few of them on the list, but if he's best available I'm ok getting him as it might give us flexibility to move some of the boys further forward onto a wing / midfield / half forward role.

I'm a hard against. (that sounds a bit rude but I assure you I have only honourable intentions). Patrick Naish but with better PR.

Morris is waayyyy better overhead than Hughes ever was.

Also gets off the ground more and miles stronger holding his ground.

Cleve was an elite kick though, near perfect action. Just couldn't get it as was pretty soft and doubt worked hard enough to improve.

Was a very good catalogue model though.

Cleve was a very one dimensional lead up forward, he was born in the wrong decade and probably would have been successful in the eighties and early nineties.

Agree 100%. But both lead-up mark, set shot, 190 fwds.

My observation was Morris got better as the season progressed, often playing high up the ground and doing plenty of work between the arcs. He's closer to Josh Battle than Cleve Hughes and much more accomplished at ground level. I don't ever recall Hughes splitting packs or kicking majors once the aerial contest was nullified.

Other than Gibcus, which as a top 10 doesn't really count, the media hasn't had much of a clue about us over the last few drafts.

McAuliffe sounds like a goer - haven't seen his name mentioned here much

"As an overall package, McAuliffe has plenty of the common attributes of any good inside midfielder, with strong potential to improve other facets of his game. He has shown glimpses of that, and has the capacity to be a Patrick Dangerfield type of midfielder down the line. Luke Hodge is another player he draws inspiration from, and it's no wonder both of the aforementioned AFL stars are also great captains. That's another trait of McAuliffe's which clubs will appreciate, given he has held leadership positions across many levels in his junior career."

If we're piling all the chips onto elite kicking I'm good, much rather do it this way than an athlete with sketchy kicking technique.
I agree mate need to get back to basics kicking needs to be a top priority. What's your take on Schoenmaker ? has alot of good traits.
