2023 Draft Thread.

I find it very manufactured that's why I don't like it. I was watching the 2009 draft as a comparison and each player had their parents there. When their names were called out they gave mum and dad a GENUINE hug and then went up.
Spot on. Give your immediate family and girlfriend a hug then get up there and get your jumper. Celebrate with the other hangers on after that. No need to hug 25 people before you get on stage. Drags the whole thing out waaaaaaaaaayy too long.

Especially when they’re just your doofus mates who are on the juice and carrying on like pork chops and trying to get themselves on tv.

Doesn’t have to be a formal coronation event, but doesn’t have to be so badly unprofessional either.

Twomey writing articles crowing about his phantom draft. Makes me want to chunder. The bloke is paid full-time to do this, works on it all year, as an AFL employee has a rolodex of managers, list managers and recruiters, and we are meant to be impressed?

Half of us would do nearly as well as rank amateurs with jobs and few contacts. FMD, the AFL is sick to the core.

(I reckon I was doing better than him in some respects earlier in the year, he's been very late to the party on quite a few).

Actually I'm going the crow, what I had over him:

I had Connor O'Sullivan in the top 10 very early, a month or 2 before CT.
He refused to have McK in the top 3 until a week ago. Had him variously at 4,5 and 6. I had him concreted in the top 3 in May.
I had Caddy top 12 early, he had him top 6 until a month ago.
I had Roberts at pick 35+, he had him at around the 20 mark until this week.
He was much later to cotton-on to the how good the other 3 GCS academy goys are.
Actually he was late on the JW train too, had him at 3 and 4 early in the year, he was AA CHF as a 17yo in 22 FFS.
He never rated Cleary at any stage, I had him at 20-25 all year.

All of the above reflects the fact I followed and watched the Allies closely, and CT didn't. And also, particularly in the case of Roberts, and Gothard now I think about it, pro Vic bias and the fact he's in the Melb boys club. Not saying I'm any big guru, very far from it, but shows how a rank amateur can be right and the alleged oracle pro wrong.

Probably the two slowest players left. (y)
If we're piling on all the chips onto elite kicking I'm good, much rather do it this way than an athlete with sketchy kicking technique.
My concern with Schoenmaker is it seems he is just a very tall outside player. In the vision I have seen he doesnt play anywhere like his size suggest he should. Zero contested work.

Thats similar to my view. Very much Ben Lennon vibes to me. All outside and nothing contested.

His contested numbers are concerning, I mentioned that in the phantom draft, but I think these stats need to be considered alongside his intercept numbers which are passable for the type of role he plays. Did Schoenmaker's direct opponents truly dominate the contest? I didn't get that feeling and despite the lack of pace I still think there's a place, particularly if he's taking kick outs and smashing up zone defences with some 60 metre long bombs. Make no mistake, he's a risk, but there's enough upside to make the risk worthwhile.

Yeah you're convincing me. I've seen him play live, I've seen him go into the ruck, I think Zero is a bit harsh, but he's no Lynchy thats for sure. I was thinking top 20 too high, 30+ a good get, but I'm waivering. The 60m low bullets from the back half, and through the big sticks in the front half, are pretty seductive, I got to admit.

From fox footy
Schoenmaker - is the definition of a line-breaker, with the ability to change the course of matches by using his run and carry then thumping the ball forward with his long, raking left boot. He has the size to be a third tall defender

If we are going to go down the KP size player we best get one that plays that role. Its all well and good being a long kick but thats no where near enough as a trait to make it in the top grade. Red flags everywhere with this player. I would rather take a punt on Morris who represents a skill set translatable to AFL.

That can be the only reason for me. If Geelong were going to pick him they would have, to me Essendon have paid pick 31 to find out if they were going to pick him or not when they could have found that out by just letting Geelong have their pick.

Unless you are correct Geelong has played Essendon on this one
If Geelong really wanted Caddy they wouldn't have done the deal. Can't see it being anything but a win for the Cats

Balta has the exact same trait re: long kicking etc. But how many times is this actually executed in a game? Both Balta and Schoenmaker possess similar body sizes. Difference is Balta loves the contest. Balta was showing this in his draft year. You cant teach that unfortunately.

Siciliy and Schoenmakers is a horrible comparison. Sicily loves the contest, Schoenmakers not so much.
Sicily is actually a really good yardstick given he started life as a forward, growth is always possible once in the system.
