2021 Draft Thread

Heh heh heh…you gotta love the way Josh was so excited. You could tell his head was spinning. He didn’t know what to say his mind was running so fast.

Reckon he’s lost maybe 4-5 kg over his playing weight this year. Pushing himself hard leading up to the combine testing ? Good sign if so.

Interesting call to be made by Freo tonight. If they keep that pick which I think they would, will shape the rest of this draft. If they overlook Johnson again then it will throw all predictions from then on out the window.
If Freo pass on Johnson, it should throw up red flags that there’s definite serious deficiencies in his game as they would have more intel on him than 16 other teams.

Early days there were whispers we were keen on Ned Long. Could he be one of our smokies?

theres some lumps of lads left, if that what we want; Long, Knevitt, Goater.

Long's reel makes him look like Tom Lynch rather than a mid.

these 3 unconventional are high risk/high reward. if were gonna use 3 picks, I hope we take the best of them.

1 of pale blue chip Sonsie, Johnson, Butler, McDonald, Taylor: 1 of the high risk lumps

and Ronny,

and we've covered all bases

KP; blue chip HBF; inside goal kicking mid; speculative lump mid wildcard; ronny

I reckon they’ll trade it to the Hawks or Geesook for a Kimgs ransom and then draft Bazzo. Their recruiting and trading in the last 3 years has been very good.

Hartley seems to like to replace retired/delisted player's to similar types,so l would be expecting a tall.

He reminded a bit if Warwick Capper when he spoke.

Well, Johnson and Sonsie appeal more to me but let’s assume we can’t get access to them. Whilst I’d like an inside mid I think the likes of Butler and Howes have less gaps to contend with in an AFL environment than MacDonald has. Maybe Murley as well.

Don’t think its that at all. A few clubs rated him top 10 so it’s just the way the cards fell. He’ll go very early tonight along with Goater and Butler.

By the way, good night here last night, made it much more enjoyable.

We can disagree and not be sure about what's happening but their was very few melts.

I've woke up fascinated about what these picks mean to Liam Baker, Jayden Short, Noah Balta and Sydney Stack. Role changes? Seems so.

Gibcus screams modern day back, attack launching stopper. 195cm 88kgs with pogo sticks. Rare. The Jake Lever calls aren't quite right, he's way more athletic than Lever. There is some Naughton, some Jacob Weitering, some Sam Taylor. It's a prototype. Hopefully overlaps with Tarrant and Grimes retiring he is ready to go.

Brown screams Houli replacement. He runs, takes them and picks good options. And Sydney looked annoyed, that's a good sign. It's always the way with what's modern sides that win the flag but Brown screams a Melbourne footballer. Running, skillful and wants the ball. Christian Salem anyone?

We want to build from the back clearly, win the ball back and move it fast. Tonight is going to provide more surprises.

Think the club is prepared to back Ross, RCD, Dow and Martyn in the midfield. Soldo back will help our midfield and improve our clearances. Brown's a good pick coz he's got pace, can transition and has high efficiency by foot. More pace, transition and footskills is what we need with our remaining picks.

Assuming Wanganeen-Milera can be included in the "medium" (small) defender category, that makes Brown the 5th ranked so far this draft behind also Sinn, Chesser, & Wilmot. 5 in the top 20 seems excessive and perhaps an indictment on the quality available/lack of key position players?
in one sense it shows that the medium rebounding fast defender is important - 4-5 picks in the top 20.
We might have hoped that there would be some on offer at 26-28, but on the night realised they were going going going....

But not gone. More rebounding defenders still available. For example Lewis Rayson, capt of SA. Instead of Brown could we have gone a Johnson - Rayson combo?
Easy with hindsight.

Rayson is an elite user of the ball by hand and foot, and has a burst of acceleration that gets him out of trouble as he rebounds off the half-back line. He had a brilliant finals campaign with Glenelg and a solid Championships as well for SA as the captain of the side. Rayson is skilful and intelligent, and is one of the most reliable ball users in the pool.

Besides perhaps missing out on Brown as one of their targets, seems Geelong also got gazumped by the Swans with Sheldrick, who they also had lined up apparently.

I think your underestimating Macdonald he is good up forward as well, and is dual sided ,although uses his right foot more.
Howes l also like,he's more a wing/forward ,lm a bit surprised he didn't go 1st round .

Butler is good ,probably more a forward at Afl level, and develop a mid game, similar to Bolton.

Should be a interesting night, although l would be surprised if we didn't take another tall

Good post Scoop. That is a rare leap. I heard Peter Knights mentioned as a comparison last night. Hops..

I reckon MacDonald might actually be there at our first pick tonight (ex Carlton) but I think we might pass on him.

If this is correct then it would appear we are sticking with the plan that won us 3 flags; the turnover game. Time will tell if this still works but I'd like to see more focus on us winning the ball first and being more competitive in clearance and contested ball.

Bubkus has a huge leap and hits the ball at the highest point. McNaughton is the closest comparison.
