Didn't watch the draft, is it on FTA anyway? The comments around the start of the draft were funny, wow it's boring and the AFL are dragging it out - um, what were you expecting, they always drag it out. Possibly even more boring than the Brownlow count, which I also don't watch.
Anyway, on to the real action.
Gibcus looks a good pick. Tall, athletic and good footy skills. Sounds like a player you want.
Brown is a bit of a quandary given the number of young HBFs we already have. He sounds good, but this is possibly the position where we already have the most players who are good, and young. Reckon a few might be moving around to different positions in future, which is likely a good thing anyway.
All the talk about how we need to fill centreline (sorry, mids play soccer, I watch football) spots for 2022 strike me as ridiculous. Apart from the fact that I have some faith in the current crop coming through, since when do successful teams try and fill centreline gaps with first year players? Sorry, but first year players are still developing, the players we choose tonight are not picked to try and win the 2022 flag, more like the 2025 flag.
We do have some issues in the middle, but the issue isn't just that we didn't win clearances. It was also that the opposition won clean clearances. The only way to rebound off half back is if you make sure that, if you lose the centre clearance, the opposition are just spraying it forward. We need to get back to winning a greater percentage of centre clearances, but also back to making sure that opposition centre clearances are hurried, pressured and sprayed somewhere in the direction of their forward line. Only then can we rebound.
We'll see how the picks go. I have faith, but I also know that with COVID and the lack of football the draftees have played over the last 2 years, this was always going to be a bit of a crap shoot.
Hope Gibcus and Brown turn out to be superstars.
Still lots of potential with our remaining picks.
Go Tiges.
