2021 Draft Thread

Didn't watch the draft, is it on FTA anyway? The comments around the start of the draft were funny, wow it's boring and the AFL are dragging it out - um, what were you expecting, they always drag it out. Possibly even more boring than the Brownlow count, which I also don't watch.

Anyway, on to the real action.

Gibcus looks a good pick. Tall, athletic and good footy skills. Sounds like a player you want.

Brown is a bit of a quandary given the number of young HBFs we already have. He sounds good, but this is possibly the position where we already have the most players who are good, and young. Reckon a few might be moving around to different positions in future, which is likely a good thing anyway.

All the talk about how we need to fill centreline (sorry, mids play soccer, I watch football) spots for 2022 strike me as ridiculous. Apart from the fact that I have some faith in the current crop coming through, since when do successful teams try and fill centreline gaps with first year players? Sorry, but first year players are still developing, the players we choose tonight are not picked to try and win the 2022 flag, more like the 2025 flag.

We do have some issues in the middle, but the issue isn't just that we didn't win clearances. It was also that the opposition won clean clearances. The only way to rebound off half back is if you make sure that, if you lose the centre clearance, the opposition are just spraying it forward. We need to get back to winning a greater percentage of centre clearances, but also back to making sure that opposition centre clearances are hurried, pressured and sprayed somewhere in the direction of their forward line. Only then can we rebound.

We'll see how the picks go. I have faith, but I also know that with COVID and the lack of football the draftees have played over the last 2 years, this was always going to be a bit of a crap shoot.

Hope Gibcus and Brown turn out to be superstars.

Still lots of potential with our remaining picks.

Go Tiges.

Geez someone of comparisons/ plays like were shocking.
Josh Bruce, Tim English, Vademeer, and the kid we picked up Brown was compared to Taylor Duryea.

A few surprises, like Chesser, Aleer, Sheldrick and Lohmann not expected to go top 20, so a few sliders are likely to make it to our picks.
Johnson, Sonsie, Butler, Goater, MacDonald, Taylor, Howes, Motop, Knevitt, Draper to name a few.

So many mids are still on the table. Feeling quietly confident that we will land 1-2 from the above list.

I reckon things are delicately poised, you would hope we're working behind the scenes to get hold of Freo's pick, that will be Johnson no doubt. Hawthorn will take Sonsie, I'm pretty certain. That leaves Taylor. McDonald & Goater perhaps. I could live with that haul, I might be tempted to give it an A. Will it happen? Probably not but this draft has been highly unpredictable.

If we could snare Johnson would be a steal. I know you're big on Jonhson but why do you think he didn't get picked up in the top 20?
I was expecting him to go top 10.

From my rankings there's 6 players left in my top 20, I like those odds of landing some talent.

Strange draft, Johnson looks like one of those Shai Bolton scenarios where he's just missing the cut at various selections. He narrowly lost the gig at Hawthorn, West Coast would have strongly considered & Freo will likely snap him up.

Yep. I suggested Fahey or Brown for our 2nd pick a month ago.

Very athletic and elite kick. He will be a gun.

Sydney were devastated to miss him and if Kinnear Beatson and Simon Dalrymple (picked the Bont and Macrae) who are the best going around rate u then thats good enough for me.

Very impressive. He's got some weapons!

17. Tom Brown

Murray Bushrangers, NAB League / Mooroopna FC / Geelong Grammar

State: Victoria Country

Height: 186cm

Weight: 77kg

Date of Birth: 30/07/03

Cal Twomey's Phantom Draft Prediction: 18

A line-breaking defender who loves to take the game on and step past the opposition using his elite agility. Composed and a great decision maker he can also go forward and impact the game. His father Paul played 84 games for Geelong but it wasn’t enough to qualify as a father-son so he’s eligible in the open 2021 NAB AFL Draft. Represented Victoria Country at under-19s level against Victoria Metro in 2021 and was among his team’s best as well as playing five matches for the Bushrangers, averaging 16.8 disposals at an impressive 75 per cent efficiency as he mixed his football between the Bushies and Geelong Grammar. Showed his speed over 20 metres with the second best time of 2.98 seconds at the Draft Combine for Victoria Country.

I hope somehow he lands to us, looking unlikely though if we don't do a deal with Freo for pick 21.

How about West Coast go back 2 places and get a future 2nd off Port.

The only two players I'd trade for would be Johnson & Sonsie, preferably both but that seems unlikely. Failing that I'd just scoop up the remaining players out of Taylor, Howes, Butler & Goater.

Taylor, Howes, Butler & Goater.

I would be happy with any 2 of these players and would even consider a player like Bazzo still or if we get a crazy offer for 1 of the picks like #29+F2 a F1 from a team not expected to finish top 5/6

Dildoro reckons they fielded several offers on Draft night for their pick 13 before knocking them all back. Pretty sure we would have been one of them. They obviously wanted Hobbs fairly seriously.

That's where I had him ranked, alongside Wilmot & Fahey. But there's still plenty of talent left on the board & we still have 3 picks. Some interesting upside reaches, haven't seen a call like Alleer since Tom Williams. They are paying for upside clearly but that's a big down payment.
As before a great difference of opinion between us about Alleer and his current level, and his potential.

Expect him to play round 1.

Let’s get Butts.
Yeah l would like us to get Macdonald ,Howes as well, but Hartley does things by the book,so another tall could be in the mix.
Happy so far with our picks,Brown is talented ,and Gibcus is a steal.

Yeah. MacDonald is ok. Think there are others that are better though.
