2021 Draft Thread

I might be convinced on filling our midfield with Bakes, Stack, etc.

But I’m still worried about the lack of razzle dazzle in our small forward dept.

No, MoJu isn’t ready yet.

Looking at the next block of picks, we pick 8-10 of the next group of picks.

Left from the PRE phantom
7 - Johnson
14 - Draper
15 - Sonsie
16 - Goater
18 - Butler
19 - Taylor
20 - Knevitt
22 - Fahey - GWS
23 - Roberts
26 - Owens - Saints
27 - MacDonald
28 - Bazzo
32 - Howes
33 - Williams
34 - Clarke
35 - Conway

If I was tipping where players go, I'd go.

21 - Freo - Johnson
22 - North - Motlop - reckon we could trade for this pick
23 - Hawthorn - Sonsie (this is why I think we should trade for Norths pick)
24 - Geelong - Knevitt
25 - Geelong - Conway
26 - Hawthorn
27 - Carlton
28-30 - Richmond

Hawks / Carlton could go for various players but lets say they go with Draper and Goater then there are some terrific picks there.

I've crossed out those which I think go in the next 5 picks. Plenty of good players on there. 3 mids or 2 mids and Bazzo would be great. I've been big on MacDonald for a while now, so would love to get him with one of those picks. Butler or Taylor and then Bazzo or Howes would be a really good return.

First pick reflected clear need long term (Gibcus), especially with Garthwaite a bust, Astbury retired and ages of some of our other key backs. Balta looks to have long term defensive partner. Brown pick a surprise. Can’t have too many class midfielders & felt we should have done more to trade into Hobbs. Why we then didn’t trade for Johnson or Sonsie is equally strange.

People will laugh when I mention his name, but Shifter Sheahan has been banging on about Brown being a smokey for months. And he’s referenced what I mentioned earlier - capacity to be a hard running mid for a team that selects him ( he’s played there once or twice for Murray this year).

I got the feeling he really wanted Geelong to select him given their lack of pace and run, and his dad’s background.

I think a half back flanker is the last thing we needed. Really disappointed with Brown.
I'm not disappointed.

He is 186cm. Some on here are saying he's 184.
Cal Twomey had him going at the next pick to Sydney, so clearly he was in the range of picks in most drafts.

We havent got a power running, speedy, good sized half back that runs all day. Bachar retired.
It tells me we like Stack (if he makes it), up forward. We like Liam Baker to help with midfield rotations. And we arent sure about Daniel at half back. Personally, I'd put Daniel up for trade to help us get Taranto next year.

For those saying you dont pick defenders and half backs with 1st round picks, Brisbane picked Wilmot before us and GWS picked Alleer with pick 15.
Melbourne needed 2 1st round picks for Lever didnt they?

Is there any reason for not a lot of love for Gibcus on this site? He seems to have plenty of upside on highlights etc and we only have Ben Miller in the wings for our defence so for me, a smart move
Gone back a load of pages and see there is so good comments on his pick
Can’t compare him to anyone else because I don’t know the juniors but I am really pleased with picking up a 195cm marking KPD.
We need mids for sure but when a quality tall is around you take him imo.

They aren't gone yet, so we may still trade. I expect both Freo and North to take a fair few calls from opposition clubs tomorrow.

Getting the best KPP in the draft has to be a bonus and getting a player who is clean with speed and skills is a big tick for me , however it’s all just theory atm , time will tell

Ive recovered my equilibrium,

and feel quite stupid at my first reaction.

Our Tom Brown is a footballer, Matthew Clarke is a genius, and benny was in the room,

so its gotta be good.

I really hope we get The Sonz tomoz
Dont think Sonz will get past the Hawks unless we trade up

On face value a bit disappointing. Gibcus pick is fine. I would have gone Hobbs but I can see the reasoning with Gibcus; looks a good player. But I really don’t get the need to draft a mid size defender in the first round. We’ve got a plethora of those. We have failed to address our most obvious and glaring deficiency, clearances and contested ball, with two first round draft picks. I think there are real concerns with our midfield. The guns that got us the flags are now past their peak and/or injured. The youngsters coming behind have question marks. Yet we select 2 defenders with first rounders. Confusing.

Anyway good luck to both boys. Hope they have very successful careers at RFC.

Either am I. But, I'd guess that the intention could be that he is seen as Houli's replacement's replacement?
D.Rioli & Stack not capable of filling that vacancy? I reckon they well and truly are, sure different players but can be as good if not better. Dan was playing close to AA quality when shifted at half back. Even Ralphsmith, Dow, & Mansell could take that spot. It may be wing or bust for Brown considering the list dynamics

We haven't gotten through a pre-season, seen the development in our youth, nor seen any modifications to our game plan and you're all ready putting the cue in the rack?

I've heard of darksiders, but all I can say to this approach is please stay away from ledges, sharp objects and watch out crossing the road.
If we were relying on a first year midfielder to save our club, we were pretty well *smile* anyway. That's what clubs like North Melbourne and
GCS are doing. Going well for them eh?
Think you got the wrong guy chief. I had a reasonable comment and made no such proclamations on our season ahead and certainly didnt throw the toys out of the cot.

Keep your childish comments about self harm to yourself thanks. I would expect much better than that from you and you should hold yourself to a higher standard.

His name is Butler. That’s who we need to get with one of our next 3.

Before people go into total meltdown (if they haven’t already), a few things about Tom Brown.

1. He has very good skills. Very tidy.
2. He has a good turn of speed and agility. Can take the odd grab.
3. Very good tank.
3. When I first heard of our interest, the view was that he had potential to move into the midfield and be a Shedda type replacement. He has a lot of the tools to be so.

For me, if there was a knock or area for development, it’s his inside game which he acknowledges himself as an area of focus.

But otherwise I think you’ll hear the club say they think he can play a different role to a hbf so stay calm.

Under18videofords point 3 is so good he had 2 of them.

A 184 outside half back flanker in the first round, given our list profile

seems an extraordinary decision.

is it a succession plan for Jayden Short?

Im stunned.
Shows they were serious about their best available comment?
