2021 Draft Thread

All this talk of taking a key defender with our first pick is making me queasy.

There is broad agreement our premiership window isn't yet shut. We have one or two more seasons with our older stars still at the top of their game.

We brought in Robbie Tarrant to fill a David Astbury-sized hole in the backline. Job done for the next two seasons.

We simply have to get the best inside / clearance mid with our first pick. No debate. If it's Hobbs, pull the trigger.

This obsession with the backline doesn't match our immediate needs. We even have a couple of promising tall backs in the reserves. The backline is arguably our strongest line at the moment.

Are we concerned about the backline because it was under siege last season?

If so, isn't the answer to win a boatload more contested ball that we did in 2021?

Get the best inside mid, and double down with at least one more with a pick in the 20s.

I can't face another season watching ordinary sides bend us over because they have a Parker, Dunkley, Greenwood, Mitchell, Stringer or Crouch and we don't.
Understand where your coming from N8 , however I believe purely from reading bits and pieces , there’s only a few potential elite footballers in this draft and ” Gibbo” is one of them , Hobbs isn’t , IMHO when weve got a rare top 10 pick we need to go best available and Gibcus at this point appears the best in his position that should be available . We’ve got potential in all areas of the ground , however we don’t havea lot of proven quality “ yet” after our mighty starting 22 . Again this is a massive draft for our attack on more Premierships , it’s huge that we find a couple of A Graders

I am not sure drafting an 18 year old inside mid is going to change your immediate prospects, unless it is a top 1-2 pick. Took Dusty years to reach star level, same for Petracca, while Judd was a 1-in-10 year freak.

Better to address an inside mid need via free agent or trade.

Aren't you doing your own phantom draft in your head Red ?, up to pick 30 odd at least, (you are wasting a lot of time on who we might pick ;) :) ).
His are the best caesar, always a head of his time , pretty sure he releases his 2011 one next week , it’s sure to be spot on as usual.

Where do you think Cal gets all his mail

Pick 9 - Will be one of Hobbs, Gibcus or Johnson
Pick 17 - Will be one of Sonsie or JVR

Whispers we are looking at doing a deal with the Bombers for their pick 13.

Of course, you would do that, logical to obtain another top 20 pick, with the amount of talent on offer.
Dealing with Ess should have the club on a high alert, Dedoro is known for being a dead set shifty.

This is exactly why it's hard to get too caught up pre draft in all the Phantoms for mine. The swathes of intel these clubs have would be kept very close to their chest. There's always surprises.
I love surprises
As long they are good surprises.
This years Draft is such a throw at the dart board job.
$50 bucks in 5 years time the best player out of this draft won't be top 10.

Lets go to parliament house and start protesting

Nope. I’m not. I’m only looking at players as a whole, then worrying about Richmond’s own possibilities closer to the day. Which is exactly what I’ve done. Not a complete 18 team 5 round irrelevant snooze fest projection, over and over, weeks out, that will change 10 times before the actual day. ;):)

Whereas I have no opinions and rely on others :)

10.15AM — TIGERS TIPPED TO TRIGGER SHAKE UP

Richmond has one of the best hands of any club, holding selections 7, 15, 26, 27, 28 and 79.

And its been tipped to use some of those assets to make a potential draft night shake up.

According to AFL Media draft expert Cal Twomey, the Tigers could bundle some of their picks to move up the order.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if if they try to do something with one of their picks in the 20s,” he told 3AW’s Sportsday.

“Potentially package it with Pick 15 and try and move up the board a little bit because there is live trading to happen.

“That would be an opportunity for them to really make some ground on the top 12 or 13 selections.”

What Richmond does with its Pick 7 — which will slide back to Pick 9 after father-son bids — will be an interesting watch.

There’s been some suggestion that the Tigers could look to plug holes in their line-up, but Twomey believes they’ll go for the best long-term prospects.

“I still think that they could be weighing up midfielder Ben Hobbs early on versus key defender Josh Gibcus,” Twomey added.

“That’s a tight call because they’ve lost some talls right at the top in terms of Cal Coleman-Jones, Mabior Chol and David Astbury, all in one hit over the off-season That would have come as a surprise to lose all three of them in one go.

“So do they take the tall or do they go for the midfield replacement who down the track might be the next Trent Cotchin or Dion Prestia?”

Dodo is the most overrated football administrator,he still lives off his glory day's with Sheedy .
Im surprised the Bombers haven't sacked him by now,he must know too much about the injection program  .

Have been thinking about this draft for "feels like forever", but we are finally here. I look forward to post discussion on our haul of picks. It will be interesting to hear everyone's thoughts and possible melts ;)

So are we going up ? Down ? All around ?

They’re not gonna have Brad Johnson on the coverage are they ? Probably only started familiarising himself with the names this morning. “A good pick by xxxx. He is a good player.”

I’m just keen to see if Gill congratulates the Dees on their premiership win during his opening address. Something that had slipped his mind in the past two drafts…

It didn't slip his mind.

The 2017 draft after our GF win was the first time in the history of the televised draft that the CEO hasn't congratulated the Premiers.

A massive campaigner
