2021 Draft Thread

All this talk of taking a key defender with our first pick is making me queasy.

There is broad agreement our premiership window isn't yet shut. We have one or two more seasons with our older stars still at the top of their game.

We brought in Robbie Tarrant to fill a David Astbury-sized hole in the backline. Job done for the next two seasons.

We simply have to get the best inside / clearance mid with our first pick. No debate. If it's Hobbs, pull the trigger.

This obsession with the backline doesn't match our immediate needs. We even have a couple of promising tall backs in the reserves. The backline is arguably our strongest line at the moment.

Are we concerned about the backline because it was under siege last season?

If so, isn't the answer to win a boatload more contested ball that we did in 2021?

Get the best inside mid, and double down with at least one more with a pick in the 20s.

I can't face another season watching ordinary sides bend us over because they have a Parker, Dunkley, Greenwood, Mitchell, Stringer or Crouch and we don't.

are you saying we've all completely wasted the last 2 months of our lives?

I wish I'd known this in September, I would have re-read 'Belief' and 'Faith. Football and Family'
Yes !! All your selections will have changed. Sorry.

I’m happy for them to do that trade. If Clarke truly believes that a player who was thought to go in the 2nd round will now be available in the 3rd round.
We effectively get the same player we wanted and then add a bonus 2nd rounder for free in next years draft.
Believe me, you’ll be happy with this scenario this time next year.

We already have two 2nd rounders next year, plus our first. So, we are in a good position.
It's not free, it's our 2nd rounder for their future 2nd. What's free is their pick 51/56 this year which should fall into the mid 40's

We have prime real estate with our trio of 2nd rounders and we should look to do a deal (I'm more inclined to think that's what Clarke & Co will do) trade for another top 20 pick which would definitely get us one of Butler, Howes, Erasmus, Sinn, Goater, Van Rooyen, MacDonald & Sonsie.
Instead of players in the 40's expected to be Pegoraro, Soligo, Lord, Josh Browne, Voss, Avery, Curtis & Dean just to name a few.

Got no problem with us taking Gibcus at 9. Good player and if the club ranks him ahead of Hobbs, fair enough. But, unless we trade up and think Johnson or Erasmus is gettable, it’s gonna leave us with an unfulfilled need around a contested ball winning mid. Sonsie isn’t that. Others around the 17 mark aren’t really either. Goater or Sinn ? Not sure.

Is that why we may be trading back ? Do we have someone like MacDonald in mind ? Do we think others in the 30’s can help eg Sheldrick and co ?

Fascinating Draft.

Macdonald is good ,but Hobb's is a better inside mid.

I have to say Macdonald does read the play well, and does have a more outside game than Hobbs ,we would have to look at him .

This obsession with the backline doesn't match our immediate needs.

On the flip side, I haven't bought into the mids obsession.

Leppa said you draft for 5 years time, and I agree

and because 5 years ago, we may not have replaced the irreplaceable engine room,

its no reason to panic and react now. there is nothing immediate about the draft.

in 5 years time, Grimes, Tarrant, Broad, Vlastuin, Reiwoldt, Lynch, Nank will all be retired.

and whose behind them?

Ivan, Miller, Balta, Collina, Ryan.

you draft for 5 years time.

add Gibcus and JVR in there and a couple of mids, and we can sleep soundly.

if we dont grab a couple of likely talls every year for the next 3 years,

our list will be a train wreck.

Sorry Astute but I see it differently to you.
You say it’s our 2nd round pick for their future 2nd rounder, and we get a pick in the mid 40’s this year for free.

But if Clarke honestly believes that player in the mid 40’s is of equal quality to whoever is left at our 2nd rounders this year, then it is Essendon’s 2nd rounder next year that is for free.

And I am more than happy to go into next year’s draft with 4 picks inside the 1st 2 rounds.

Great post; agree 100%. It is imperative we start fixing the midfield contested ball and clearance issues. Hard to win games of footy if you can't get the pill.

Spot on !
Excellent post (y)

I went to the 2012 draft at Jupiters casino on the GC.

I had my heart set on Brodie Grundy and was acutely disappointed when we took solid citizen Nick Vlastuin.

what a fool.

other notable foolish years since - I wanted Ben Lennon.

notable wisdom? I wanted $hai real bad. I wanted Noah Balta.

I was saying to Mr B the other day my draft infatuation checked out about 2004 after I wanted Tambling.

BTW pretty mindblowing to think many of the kids drafted this year were only born back then.

Apparently West Coast want Chesser with their first. Surely they trade back then as no-one is talking about him at Pick 12 aside from them.

Could be if Hobbs is still on the board, maybe we trade with them rather than the Bombers.

Pick 10 (12) ad 67 for Picks 15 (17) and 28

They would still get Chesser at 15 (17) you would think.

Its why I think we could trade for Norths 2nd. All the drafts have them taking Motlop so sounds like there is good intel out there, he will still be there at 26, so 20 and 47 for 26 and 27 would work.
So 9, 12, 20, 47 and 67.
Have been against swapping any of our 2nd rounders but that would be a pretty good result.
It may be enough to take both Erasmus and Johnson my preference, and still have some very valuable picks available for Thursday.

I think the departure of Chol, CCJ, Garth (and Big) in one off season, thats 8 metres of man, or nearly 15% of our list height

suggests pretty strongly we will accumulate talls as a priority the next few years,

and hope to hit the jackpot on a some mids.

I think if your fundamentally pro-mid this year,

you should have some strong booze on hand the rest of the week.

if we're reaching back,

my other notable wins were; I was dead against Tambling and extremely bullish on JR.

I think I may have been glad we took Corey Ellis?

Exactly. That’s why I reckon Phantoms are a waste of time too.

Aren't you doing your own phantom draft in your head Red ?, up to pick 30 odd at least, (you are wasting a lot of time on who we might pick ;) :) ).
