2021 Draft Thread

Tall mids who can kick well are as rare as hen's teeth, this extends beyond this draft & Johnson's relative unique skill set adds to his worth. His upside is also greater given he has pace, agility, height & the scope for him to be a genuine forward threat much greater than Hobbs in my opinion. From pick 5 onwards the field is pretty even so I would be looking at the draft haul in totality rather than simply grabbing a spate of inside mids.
I’m not potting your reasoning for liking Johnson. He definitely has immense upside. And if we were to pick him first whilst Hobbs was still on the board, I wouldn’t be shattered.
I just don’t agree on the reason for picking Johnson because the gap between he and Knevitt/Long is far greater than the difference between Hobbs and someone like MacDonald. Decisions like that are more likely to bite you on the arse.
Always pick best available in the 1st round.

I don't think Iife is as simple as best available, particularly when assessing upside & positional needs. I think most judges think the field from 5-15 is pretty even therefore you need to take into account scarcity, this is particularly pertinent with tall forwards, hence the reason Mac Andrew is looming as a top 5 pick. In light of this situation I'm inclined to look at all the picks in totality and find the best value at each selection. But each to his own, Hobbs isn't a bad pick but if we overlook Johnson then we might be waiting a long time for a tall polished ball user.

Winfield or Peter Jackson?
Back in my 20's, Winnie Blues, Stuyvo's (soft pack), Peter Jackson Supers or Extras, Benson /Hedges Extras and Dunhill Reds for their slow burn and kick, Kents, smoked em all only smoked Alpines or menthols if it was someone elses......... the joys of youth.

Didnt go for Longbeaches, Freedom or Holiday cigs they burned down too fast in ya hand and you'd need to light 2 just to smoke 1.

I totally agree with you, tall midfielders with polish are extremely rare, but I just don’t think it’s the be all and end all. We won 3 flags without a player of that type.
Quality tall forwards on the other hand are a different story altogether.

The Longbeach packet made my right shoulder look massive, I was the pinnacle of fashion back in the day.

but then you would have had to put up with @caesars all-night doof-orgys for the last 30 years.

you'de have the lungs of a 20 year old, but the ears and nerves of an octogenarian bomb disposal expert

Unfortunately this draft doesn’t have those quality tall forwards so it still come back to highest ranked player with the first two picks for me and then it should be needs based. However we have to remember we aren’t going to build our next premiership team in one draft.

Perfect post.
I wholeheartedly agree, highest ranked players for our first 2 picks and needs based for the next 3.
I also totally agree that we don’t need to try and fill every hole in our list in 1 draft !

I'd be surprised if we used all our picks on inside mids TBH. A poster here said at a Club 80 meeting the Club said they have a top 14 which covers our 1st 2 picks, being best available then list needs after that. We also already have Ross/RCD/Martyn/Dow who the Club seem keen to give them a decent go also. We also have a few needs going fwd but with mids being #1. We could go 2 mids 1st then a tall fwd & a smaller fwd as well as a tall back with our last 3 picks but that's just a complete guess. My preference is to focus on mids & that seems to be the popular view on here but looking at our list the cupboard is pretty bare depth wise with talls at both ends & our best 22 talls aren't getting any younger.

Was thinking something similar -
Hobbs, Sonsie, Bazzo, Clarke, Williams. The last three could totally change depending on who is available.

If it was Frank in charge I'd say Hobbs would be a near certainty, Clarke chose Cripps so he isn't afraid to go west. This will be a very interesting litmus test for our recruiting team, there's a potential royal flush if we play to the strengths of the draft, there will no doubt be some midfield gems down the order.
