2021 Draft Thread

Assuming Hobbs is selected, in all seriousness does he play seniors round 1?
I would say so, but I guess it depends on whether the club would prefer to get games into RCD & Ross. I suppose it comes down to form in the preseason, his strength and conditioning already well advanced.

When its halfway through the 3rd quarter of the grand final, down by a couple and we really need to win this clearance, who do we want?
Elite contested ballwinner vs value pick 26 and a short classy forward

My prediction for our round 1 team assuming there is no injuries is the following:
B: Grimes Tarrant Vlastuin
HB: D.Rioli Balta Short
C: McIntosh Graham Pickett
HF: Edwards Lynch Bolton
F: Martin Riewoldt Baker
FOLL: Nankervis, Cotchin, Prestia
INTER: Lambert, Broad, Soldo, Stack, Sub: Castagna
EMERG: Ross, Collier-Dawkins, Dow

Pickett's spot is probably under threat, if Hobbs replaces him the midfield then looks too inside and not enough outside run/speed IMO.

5 points down on the siren, 55 metres out, who do we want kicking for goal. Horses for courses, we need all of them.

Upside? Probably Callan Ward who is a very good player but not necessarily a headline act. That would be a good result nevertheless but I doubt whether Hobbs will be the best mid from this draft class.
Daicos and HF probs got him covered!

I know you're not playing word games but I guess the main question is who do we need to win a flag or 3.

We will need elite mids including a contested beast- Hobbs - and a smooth mover/dominant ruck rover- Johnson.

Rachele is a good bet because he's the best small forward with significant upside to be a mid, go back to under 16s and he's operating primarily in the middle. That's a great ceiling given he's a proven goal scorer.

We saw the damage Melbourne mids did.
We have seen our midfield take 3.
Not many matches are decided by a kick 55m out but a damn heap of them but dominant mids

Bayles Fritsch did okay as well. All I am pointing out is you can make scenarios to suit your argument. It takes all types to make a successful team.

But doesn't play mid today. Treat u16 form with caution
But no doubt will be a great player.

Its not the 1st pick but the other 4.
If we nail them we win, if we get a Rachele but no other then we stay with the pack

Sure, I'd take Johnson but I don't see Hobbs as the only option for the inside role, the case you make for a ruck rover is true, it's Johnson or someone who can't kick or is as slow as molasses, therefore fill the position while you have the opportunity.

There's a difference between a bloke who has played 5 games out of 30 and has had a history of injury versus a guy who spent half his time in the midfield at state level and probably produced his best work there. The only thing holding Rachele back is the tank but I suspect he will get the miles in eventually.

So if we rephrase this

Toby Greene or Taylor Adams

Interested in who you think we will actually take with out first two picks based on probability of them being there - and the types of players we are interested in...

7. Hobbs. (although I'd be also happy with Johnson)
15. Chesser (I think Sonsie will be gone, but we would take him if available)

He has more weapons in my opinion but that doesn't necessarily guarantee success. McDonald is more suited to a run and carry game so his projection is higher, his kicking also way more penetrating. Hobbs is your classic safe as houses 100 gamer who may leap into the Taylor Adams realm where his leadership and hardness shines through. It's probably a good time to be an inside mid, their value at historical highs.
I think your comments fail to take into account the impact on the game caused by the introduction of the stand rule. We all hope it will go away but that’s unlikely to happen any time soon.

Im surprised that kicking, the most foundational skill in footy, isn't tested at the draft camp.

I know Bucks had a crack at testing accuracy and it didn't last.

but I'm talking penetration. Distance. metres gained.

I'd like to see a test similar to running and standing vertical jump, but horizontal and with a ball ......

running and standing kick length/height.

Kicking penetration is often the difference between a bloke being good (Higlet), or really good IMHO

would be a very informative number, and very easy to obtain.

If theres 2 blokes you cant split - lets say Erasmus and Johnson.

1 kicks 55m off a step and 1 kicks 40m, it makes your decision pretty easy doesn't it?

to paraphrase @Leysy Days,

show me a kids dynamic glutes, quads and hammy data,

and I will show you the footballer

To me it's the expectation that a lower ranked inside mid will be satisfactory.

We already have Shai Bolton, so a forward line including Bolton and Rachele would be ace, but if our mids are Dunstan and Hately types then we still have problems

Toby Greene hasn't made it as a mid.
For mine I d treat his midfield capabilities with caution..... doesn't make him a bad player or a bust though!

I remember the 3rd quarter of a Hawks Premiership...cometh the hour cometh the Fatman. Everyone lifts when a forward fires.

I know you're not keen on us taking Hobbs with our first pick Bully and i'm wondering if this is based purely on his footy and if you might factor in the type of person he is. It seems that whenever they talk to somebody who has had anything to do with this years crop of draftees they all seem to rave about what a great person and leader Hobbs is.

Only yesterday, I caught the end of an interview on SEN with a guy by the name of Tarkyn (I'm assuming its Tarkyn Lockyer but I only caught the very end of the interview) and they asked him if through his dealings with the boys was there one kid he really hoped would be drafted. He couldn't say Hobbs name quick enough, said they spent a bit of time together and he's a ripper.

I get the feeling with Hobbs you're not only getting a very, very good footballer but a quality person and a natural leader. Now I wouldn't know him if I bumped into on the street but every time I hear them talk about him as a bloke I get more and more convinced that the tigers would be mad not take him if he's still available at our first pick.
Oh you’d know him if you bumped into him on the street - you’d be flat on your back.

But he’d help you to your feet because he’s a good character.
