2021 Draft Thread

Thanks all been some great info on the potential draftees on this thread .

Totally understand both arguments re best available and needs , to me there’s no point taking a player I.e ruck just because we need a big doofus if he’s no bloody good . We are in a tricky situation as we have cubs young enough on the list to make up along term midfield, however are they good enough ? For me with such a rare bunch of high picks we really need to take best available , our 8 midfielders come round 1 2024 could be just about all new names . Our key forwards are a big worry , however again no point taking a tall with big queries over another midfielder just because his tall . The draft is not the only way to ad players .

Im hoping we go best available and it just happens to have a couple of KPP , a genuine bull midfielder and a couple of silky highly skilled mids and just maybe a goal kicking small forward .
Great post

3 sleeps wish list *based loosely in reality.

Hobbs or Rachelle (think we'd have to take Rachelle if both there, but think we'll get Hobbs)
Sonsie
JVR
McDonald
Ronny

:banana
Love the Fejo man too Ez. Really hope we can snag him with one of our later picks.

Well, in formulating a ranking you would need to place some sort of value on particular positions. That is generally obvious for say flankers, most of whom get snapped up in the second round. The same can be said about state league talent, these are generally better players given they have had extra development time. So picking the best player not so clear cut and you have to draft for upside. It's also like me having to choose between Rance or Riewoldt, who is the better player? They are both elite for their position so how do you split them? I personally have Gibcus higher than Hobbs based on upside, the fact his position is harder to fill & the fact his athletic profile might be enough to get him operating as a key forward. This has nothing to do with him being the better player at this given moment, it's about where I see him in 5 years time.

Remember the 2004 draft? Clarkson debriefed the media by stating he has made the spine the focus of the rebuild, he placed extra value on key position forwards given their scarcity. Lurking in the background was Wallace congratulating himself on grabbing the best outside runners in the land, something he would repeat the following year with Oakley-Nicholls. These decisions are as much about philosophy as they are about assessing raw talent. Aaron Fiora was better performed than Pavlich, he was the 'better' player based on senior exposure, that didn't turn out too well either. From my perspective you need to grab tall forwards in the first round, if not the top 10. The stats don't lie where this is concerned and despite the fact that there's a 50% chance you will get a bust you have to roll the dice at some point.
I wasn’t talking about best player right now (otherwise nearly every man-child will be drafted in the top 10). I meant best prospect which definitely includes their potential.
What I was trying to say was I wouldn’t be taking Gibcus purely for the fact that he is the best defender/tall prospect available and leaving a generational type midfielder on the table.
Now, if you were to ask me about who I would take out of Gibcus and Hobbs ?
I would be inclined to take Gibcus. I think he can be that good.
But the fact is, it’s not an exact science. What we see now may make us look quite silly in 5 years time !

It's that time of year when I write to Santa for my Chrissy prezzies.

Dear Santa

All I want is Johnson, Sonsie, McDonald, Clarke and Alleer at the 2021 AFL Draft. I don't want any others (and don't listen to anybody else's list wishes). If that could be arranged - a little ahead of time I know - but I promise to be a good big boy all of 2022.

Thanks FFW

PS If you put your talents to next year - Tarranto and King would be nice. Just sayin'.

PPS Actually wouldn't mind Howes this year too - don't know how that gets done - that's on you. You're the man with the magic.

PPPS Could you give Dani Laidley some fashion tips. She shouldn't have to wear pearls and twin sets to get the job done. I know some like that 50's housewife look - myself included. But we've gone past that as a society.

One thing I’ve learnt over the years is don’t get too excited or disappointed on draft night , there’s never been , never will be anyone who gets it right or wrong every time , so many things can effect a draftees ability to reach their potential . Only thing guaranteed on draft night is that all recruiters will be “thrilled” and “ surprised “ with who they drafted

This is around about what I would think too. Though I think JVR will be gone.

Hobbs / Rachele / Gibcus (in that order)
Sonsie
MacDonald
Bazzo / Aleer
Taylor / Clarke / Fejo Jnr

We don't need half backs so ignored the likes of Wilmot, Brown etc.

I think 3 mids (at least 1 - Sonsie) can start forward. A tall and a small would be perfect for our list needs and whats on offer.

If we don't get Biggie back, I'd throuh a rookie spot at a mature ager from the VFL, Matt Hammelmann for example who has kicked goals for fun for Apsley since being delisted by the Lions.

We'd then have key backs, Tarrant, Grimes, Balta, Miller, Bazzo / Aleer
and Rucks / Key forwards, Nank, Soldo, Mate, Jack, Lynch, Ryan and Hammelmann

Its a decent list balance just without that superstar forward coming through, but sounds like thats exactly what next years draft is for. Having our 1st and Norths 2nd gives us some great flexibility to be able to trade up in the first round.

Pleasures all mine
We’re all gonna get on the juice, let off fireworks, yell at the tv, send emails, break plates and do cartwheels. Stop trying to rain on our parade old man and go and have a nap. Or practice your two foot putting or something. It’s terrible.

I reckon there’s a good chance we will get Hobbs or Gibcus and Sonsie or JVR with our first round picks. The way I’m guessing it will go:

Gone before our pick (8) JHF, Daicos, Darcy, Callaghan, Rachelle, Ward, Andrew, Amiss

Our Pick: Hobbs/Gibcus

Gone between our picks (7): Hobbs/Gibcus, Sinn, Johnson, Goater, NWM, Erasmus, Howes (or another bolter)

Our Pick: Sonsie/JVR

Like the logic and like the picks we end up with too.

Rumour is Hawks going Johnson which should spook Dockers into Amiss at 8. We then have a choice of Hobbs, Ward, Gibcus Erasmus and Sinn at 9.

Two of those would be beautiful if we could trade up.

So who will be the Samson Ryan or 2021

who is that random kid from queensland we will select this year

I'll take a stab and say Jed Foggo, Palm Beach Currumbin/Suns Academy.

190/90 takes contested marks like he's a wicketkeeper catching golfballs. left footer has kicked 60m since he was 13.

If he was a rear view in March on a calendar, it would only ever be March in @Leysy Days garage. kind of a 6"2 David Cloke.

still not sure where his position is though.

Sounds like his parents were from Mordor & Dagobah.

A 6'2" Ron Barrassi circa 1950's is probably a better description than a 6'2" David Cloke.

possibly an intercepting back pocket in the Shannon Hurn mould would be a player comparison?
