2020 finals–week one: the other games

One thing to come out of last night for a lot of posters will be some comfort that Razor Ray won't be progressing much further.

For some reason he was bouncing the ball a metre to the left of centre, but instead of following the shape he intended it was going further left. Because he was starting left, instead of that sort of bounce normally following the arc and going out of the circle, it was sitting over the ruckman on the left, leaving no chance for the other because he also wasn't getting much height.

Very lucky it wasn't close and a centre break didn't decide the game. Can't have that sort of bouncing being done.

Otherwise it was usual finals fair, pressure went up, skills went down and hardness was often the difference in the contest. We should feel pretty comfortable with all of that.
Exactly Richo. Forgot to mention that in ‘bounce’ of the ball point.

Think he is in the Adelaide hub permanently until Prelim final for PA.
After that???

He is there version of Chol
Yes, but Port are/were vulnerable down back with an undersized defence. The Rat can take a mark and bust packs and makes them less predictable. Port just had to go to Hawkins all night. When Stanley played forward early, look what happened. Took a couple of grabs and had shots at goal.

Can't for the life of me understand why Ratugolea was dropped.

Such a dangerous forward target and would have made his man accountable, possibly giving Hawkins more opportunities in one-on-one contests.

I get that they're already a tall side but, let's face it, slick ball movement isn't their DNA. The more blokes who can take a mark the better.

Reckon the Cats have overthought selection and paid a price for it.

I don't see how they can pick him for the next game based on that. While they insist on making every umpire be able to bounce the ball then they have to be able to do it adequately. It isn't hard to move umpires between hubs if they need to.
He was really poor in so many facets of the game.
Glad we didn’t play PA there last night.

Was staggered to see Foot and Fleer given finals. Deboy got a gig in Perth. Rosebury is only an emergency so must be considered past it. The umpiring ranks are thinning out. At least Fisher and Margetts are only emergencies.

We have Shaun Ryan tonight, who is retiring at the end of the season. Also Gianfagna who has done barely 50 games, and Mollison with whom we have our worst W/L record according to a recent article.

Exactly.
Ragdoll would have been a difficult match up for their undersized backline.
Again Scott trying to be too cute and not stretch PA defence.

I think Ratguts would have been a major upgrade on Hawkins' performance last night.

Spot on
His centre bouncing was quite extraordinary - and a couple of those bounces actually went almost to the point where he should have recalled them but he didn’t
It was a huge disadvantage to the other ruckman and I’m surprised one of players in the middle didn’t make an issue of it
Surely there is a rule or guideline somewhere that specifies that the umpire should bounce the ball “in the middle” - and that white line that splits the circle is the one the umpire must approach along
Is there still a particular spot - artificial surface or something - there expressly for the purpose of being “bounced”?

I saw it as an admission by Razor that his bouncing wasn’t up to standard and he was then prepared to compromise the game for his own deficiencies.
Bizarre and completely unacceptable.

Chris Scott did at half time, and good on him.

He's been complimentary of us all season. Huge turn around. It's obvious that Grigg has had a massive influence on the Cats.

Or he's just had media training - probably compelled because he wasn't winning many friends or favours as shown by their marketing research most likely, in his job interests also (I don't believe all Cats fans are so convinced by him). He's been forced to manage himself to be far warmer, more composed and NOT salty. He smiles more, treats the media a little more kindly and respectfully and, finally, even (begrudgingly) acknowledges opposition. Watch his presser again. He ensures he enters relaxed, including a studied smile before he even sits down, just to make sure he is not messaging hostilely as is his natural inclination after another finals loss. Otherwise, deals with the confronting realities with a lot of spin - that has not changed - and is virtually allowed to escape with it - although MaDR does persist a little to bother him.

Although, as was pointed out by many on here, after their recent loss to us, still could not call us Richmond; instead - them, they ...

But so many of the coaches have had makeovers based on how Dimma re-modelled himself post-2016 (Buckley notably). PA's game was based on us last night and Hinkley was a clone of Dimma last night, raving about how closely bonded his players are, their connection, really love each other, will do anything for each other ...

But personally I don't mind Hinkley. He is smart enough to learn from the best and apply it vigorously, never too full of himself from what I have seen, and acknowledges how good the opposition are - like us.

Edit: So I think it has little to with Grigg who, incidentally, was on pre-game justifying selection of oldest team in history on grounds of it was an advantage. Sucked into Salty's spin, Grigga!

Cos Scotty’s still trying to prove he’s the smartest guy in the room.

If we get to a grand final this year our own skipper will make this list. Currently on 11. Hopefully he will be 10-4

Really agree, N8. Ratugolea nearly turned the game around against us recently with his strong contested high marking - which Hawkins can hardly do any more, relies on out-positioning by shove-outs mostly, or leads.
Looking at the game. Who would have been a greater threat? Him or Rohan? Hope Salty picks the same side if we have to play them again.

on channel 7's coverage last night. did anyone notice jobe watson's explanation on why the umpire needs to bounce the ball straight so no ruckman is disadvantaged? he felt the need to go into detail on why a straight bounce will give each ruckman exactly half of the circle to work with.

thanks Jobe. i could barely watch.

Jobe also said that Port were forcing geelong into alot of unforced errors.

Ratugolea reminds me a bit of the way Chol is for us. Sometimes he looks really good and then he just disappears from the game. He should be a better player than he is.
Different player to Chol but the same sort of almost enigmatic type.
