2020 finals–week one: the other games

Is there a player in the game with a more over inflated reputation than tom Stewart?
dangerfield.....awful disposal and panic kicks all the time...never stands up in finals or when the real crap hits the dan against top teams.....last night highlighted all these points...can be a great player..but he is not the superstar everyone raves about

Castagna like, although George won a flag with that kicking.
Bit of an insult to George. He was electric in the GF, despite his kicking. Hawkins was Hawkins.

I don't think Geelong were disgraced. Tough to play Port there. But just another finals loss to add to their enviable record. Both Eagles and Pies could knock them out in straight sets which would be hilarious.

My honest assessment after watching last nights game.

Waiting’s Points
—————————-

1. Hawkins two soda misses. Why he felt the need to rush those two shots.?
2. He kicks those it’s a closer result.
3. Both teams didn’t like give me ‘ a wow ‘ factor with their football. Granted PA had a little patch in the third where they kicked 3 , but apart from that??
4. Both teams , especially PA more so employed a ‘flood tactic’ similar to some sides who have done that against us. Those sides did that to avoid a ‘blow out’ PA and lesser extent the Cats employed this to a) kick the ball locked in their forward half and b) to limit the power forwards of which PA were concerned mostly with Hawkins. They pushed Hawkins out wide with a low % shot on goal which didn’t concern Hinkley or Hawkins match up. Dixon on the other hand , if PA where in a position to lose was almost , out of the two to get himself reported. Just overrated .
5. If we meet either of these two sides we have to plan for ‘ the flood ‘ tactic they may employ.
6. PA may get an armchair ride to a GF berth but any side facing them shouldn’t be thinking at AO we are not a chance. They are gettable on lasts nights performance. Any other side could have beaten PA.
7. Cats looked terribly slow and apart from say 4-5 players didn’t play well and PA as a ‘team’ played well and didn’t blow the Cats away.
8. As a spectacle , I know it’s finals but 9 goals isn’t going to win you the GF in my eyes, unless you want to suffocate the living daylights out of the opposition. With these shortened quarters the AFL have a lot to answer for if this is going to be the ‘tactic’ or ‘standard’ of these finals.
9. True winners are grinners and the rest can please themselves.
10. Lastly the standard of umpire was woeful and they need to sort out this ‘15 metres’ when in many instances the ball travelled 15 & more.
11. oh yeah sorry, sort out the bounce of ball. Shocking. Some were not recalled when they should have been and I’m glad we don’t have Chambermaid cause in that first quarter it was all about ‘look at me’ look at ‘me’ stuff. No one wants to hear your voice or you belittling players. Umpire the game.

Waiting’s summary
———————————
PA are now second favourite behind the Tigers for the flag.

Let’s see how the Tigers & the Lions play tonight to give us all, as well as the media an insight into the flag favourite.

Nice stuff.
I would add Carlie had a bad night, lumps of lead for hands and chest and the AA Hawkins got away with blue murder, hands pushing in the back all night.
The tigers already know how to handle Hawkins but Charlie will be a nightmare for teams if the delivery is good in there next game or games.

Nice work, Waiting!

I thought both sides applied good pressure but I didn't see a pressure gauge during the telecast to confirm.
As you point out, if Hawkins kicked a bit straighter it would have been very close.
Geelong are slow
Dangerfield has his look at moi, look at moi moment but overall was average. He has a big finals monkey on his back and finals pressure causes him to hack kicks even worse.
Gazza only fair. Should retire. So should Selwood.
Port were ok but I didn't come away fearful. That said I'm praying we win tonight and don't have to travel to face them in Adelaide with a packed house of ferals.

I've thought it will be Port v Richmond GF for some weeks now. Still think that.

Port played very close to our style.
Good defence. .Hartlett did Vlas work.
Talls brought the ball to ground for smalls.
They are strong in the midfield and run hard. They play on.
Tackle hard.
Very Tigers like.

We are more talented and with Lynch better up forward but they are stronger midfield. Boak is very good.
Hard to beat in SA and if we play them in QLD will be a great GF.
Port are the real deal IMO.

there is one major difference between us and Port.

with ball in hand, they make unforced errors. a lot of 'em. they are unskilled.

if we play them in a final, our pressure will cause delicious turnover to feast on. we will smash them in QLD.

on channel 7's coverage last night. did anyone notice jobe watson's explanation on why the umpire needs to bounce the ball straight so no ruckman is disadvantaged? he felt the need to go into detail on why a straight bounce will give each ruckman exactly half of the circle to work with.

thanks Jobe. i could barely watch.

During the 3rd they mentioned Port pressure gauge was 219 vs 192, (which isn't poor), for Geelong.

I was very much, “ am I watching the tigers replica “ with port a lot of the game... high forward press, lock down exits until opponent panics and turn over with a runner streaking past any scrimmage...
Oddly familiar

Only watched some of the game but the way Port locked up the exits from their forward line was very obvious, and very much like the way we do it. I recall Geelong kicking sideways across the ground, and then back at one stage. They had nowhere to go.

If we meet Port I just hope we have a good way through this.

Port are very good. Good enough to win? Probably but that doesn't mean they will win. We have to be on our game now, finals - win 3 to win the flag.

Our side is full of experienced finals performers. They know what's involved and how to deal with it.

So if we win tonight and then the flag, Cotch will join that list with 14 finals matches, 10 wins, 4 losses at 71.4% (on my calculation). not too shabby

Looking at AFL tables he has played 11 finals, all as Captain and his record is 7 wins 4 losses.

Win tonight and he would be at 8/4 or 66%.
