Re: Ben Cousins threads and Poll [Merged]

Interestingly the Weagles had discussed the possibility of a law suit against the club despite sacking Cousins before he was found guilty of the charges.
That alone suggests this recent scandal was not an isolated incident after his initial stint from rehab.

Also yesterday, it was revealed that Eagles's management took a calculated risk to sack Cousins the day after he was charged, after discussing the possibility of a $1 million-plus law suit from the Brownlow Medal winner.

The club still believes Cousins's refusal to co-operate with police over a blood test was sufficient to sack him because it was part of an "accumulation of recent events", and that any efforts to sue will fail.

Would you hire a known drug addict to your workplace jb?

Would I? It is almost impossible not to.

I was only endorsing your post (ok, a bit of selective editing may have occured, but you know how the media works).

Surely you are not suggesting methamphetamines are just like alcohol or cigarettes?

Again if you knew(as we do in Cousins case) that someone had a history of hard(illegal) drug use and had been sacked by their previous employer because of associated problems would you employ them to your business?

And was about to return to the USA for further rehabilitation following apparently, or why would he be checking in again, non-entirely successful rehab there a few months prior.

Re: Ben Cousins threads and Poll [Merged]

He acts like a spoilt brat Hollywood star. While I'd like to see his skills at RFC, unfortunately you'd have to take the man with them. I reckon he'd be severely disruptive among our kids.

Fire up Demetriou.

How do you explain the missed training sessions etc. that led to his initial 12 week suspension from his club despite never testing positive?

How do you explain his girlfriend Samantha Druce splitting from Cousins because she no longer found his 'lifestyle' desirable?

How do you explain the fact that a football club has clearly given their star player numerous chances to clean up their act before sacking them?

How do you explain not one but two extended stays in an overseas rehab facility?

There are various levels of addiction.
Not all addicts are the stereotypical images you see on the faces of meth websites etc. but that doesn't mean that they are not a liability around others. Particularly in a team environment where others are easily influenced by their leaders.

Cousins name and ability has got him through plenty of scrapes but the fallout around his 'lifestyle' is beginning to mount.

Are you sure you want to expose the RFC to Ben's issues for the short term gain he might provide?

Your on fire today Oldie and many good points you do make.

People need to forget the arguement about whether Ben is a full blown addict or what not because its largely irrelevant. I have seen MANY people, including very professional people, who are full blown addicts, who maintain their lifestyle and do not become your stereotypical Junkie that everyone seems to align with Ben Cousins. Cousins is a professional athlete who has obviously been combining the best of both worlds for sometime, but it is obvious that the dark side of his world has slowly started to overcome and impact on his professional life to a point where he can no longer maintain control. He is a fitness fanatic and has maintained a regular gruelling training regime, a good diet and had the money to support his indulgence. As the professor from the rehab clinic rightly pointed out it is quite possible for people to combine professional sport and substance abuse. Balance is the fine line and Ben's recent history would suggest he may have crossed the line,

The fact is that Ben Cousins has a substance abuse problem, whether people consider him an addict or not is pure symantics. He has a problem. A serious problem. One of the issues with his problem is that no matter how hard he tries relapses are not only common, but expected in recovering addicts (substance abusers).

This is not the kind of issue we need at the RFC IMHO.

He was a great footballer, whether he can again recapture that greatness is yet to be seen unfortunately.

Has Ben had his blood test yet? :hihi :hihi :hihi :hihi

Re: Ben Cousins threads and Poll [Merged]

We need to be looking at Cousins from the perspective of how we can assist in his rehab.

If we can't we can't.

As a a footy club we are very clean and likely to be able to exercise a positive influence on one of the games best players. It is a very good environment for a team of young blokes working towards a common objective, to be able to help out one of their number, to assist with that objective. (For WC to leave Ben living with one of the central characters in the whole fiasco just indicates to me how little advice WC have bothered to take.)

And if we leave him to hang out and he isn't playing footy I really believe his chances of a successful rehab drop from around 85% to about 5%. If we fail we will at least have tried.

If on the other hand if Ben Cousins makes a success of the next period in his life with the assistance of the RFC, then we will see a great return on many many levels.

Re: Ben Cousins threads and Poll [Merged]

A Spaced out and hungover Cousins would still be a better midfield proposiition than the current
rotation of underachieving, no hoper losers eg Johnston, Tivendale & Tuck.
Why this trio wasnt Whitnalled is behond comprehension!!!

Re: Ben Cousins threads and Poll [Merged]

Right on Diggler, it seems that Tivendale always escapes any kind of criticism, he knows how to fly under the radar. :cutelaugh

Have to disagree there, its not the RFC's jobs to be assisting his recovery.

We have only just started to improve our player welfare so that we can help the young team we have at the moment. I really don't think that diverting these resources for a player like Ben Cousins is practical, irregardless of how good a player he is (or more realistically, was).

Re: Ben Cousins threads and Poll [Merged]

For all those people who do not want to take Cousins because of the influence he will have on our club and sponsors etc, what impact has Cousins habbit had on the Eagles in the last 4/5 years. In this years first final if he had of stayed injury free for the entire game, odds on they would of won that game. From my memory the two years before that they were in the granny.

There is lots of speculation about another melbourne club who has shot up the ladder who may have some problems in this regard. From what I can see there is no evidence to say picking Ben Cousins up will necessarily affect this club negatively from a win/loss point of view. While West COast are coping heat about their drug culture, people are fullish if they do not think there are other players at other clubs without similar problems. They are also niave if they think there club is too stong and well managed to be affected by it.

Great sporting teams are litred with individuals who have had their problems. They are also litred with individuals who most people do not like in the team. Cousins football this year was brilliant.

If available I think we should take him. God knows if he turned his life around at richmond and we become successfull what a story, if he stuffs up to a point he know longer should stay on the list we have given it a go. He can do us a favour and play great football and we can do him a favour and show him some support when he needs it.

Re: Ben Cousins threads and Poll [Merged]

Would take a chance cos a change is as good as a holiday.
He is a class act, something we dont have much of at TIGERLAND.
Take him no.1 in the PSD.

Yep and in recognition of our big signing, maybe we can ditch the tiger skin and include yellow and black crack pipes in next years' membership packs.

Re: COUSINS WANTS TO PLAY, WE NEED A QUALITY MIDFIELDER, JOIN THE DOTS

Why not, would certainly add to our midfield and what would we have to give up to get him - nothing?

Re: COUSINS WANTS TO PLAY, WE NEED A QUALITY MIDFIELDER, JOIN THE DOTS

He is deregietered, won't be playing in 2008.The earliest he will be registered if at all will be 2009.Next.
