Football is an amazing game, never in my life would I have thought I'd be sitting here annoyed that Ben Cousins could be retiring from footy and our great club, we may not have had much success over the years but gee its interesting being a richmond supporter, I'm glad we gave Ben a second chance it has been mutually beneficial for both parties and let's hope its a platform for success.

Yep. I wouldn't have asked you if I didn't suspect that was the case. A reasonable assumption seeing you chipped in to a discussion I was having with someone else about the matter once before. It's a pity your memory conveniently left you so you can post a very specific comment but not remember who made it.

When did I "chip in"? Care to provide me with a link?

Not interested in answering the question Rosy re. Cousins and membership?

Its just gives our $pon$or$ more exposure with all the logos there for all to be seen at the press conference.

All the more reason to do it this afternoon. There are 3 footy shows on TV tonight who would have all played clips from the press conference and shown those logos for all to see. Add to that the 6pm news on all channels and there's great exposure. By the time the 6pm news is on tomorrow night, it will be very old news and won't be given the amount of time it would have tonight and we (and our sponsors) will have missed out on the footy shows.

IMO this is wrong

so far we have gotten coverage in the papers today about the impending Monday meeting
SEN and radio talking constantly about "what will be next"
the meeting taking place and the speculation around it will definitely get a run in the 6pm news
the footy shows tonight will at least touch on it
the newspapers tomorrow will lead with the likely retirement of cousins (if the early leads in the papers websites are any guide)

THEN you get the actual announcement

more discussion on SEN and other radio that day as they review the career and the decision
and another run on the 6pm news

You're actually making my point. The footy shows will discuss it, and SEN are and will discuss it but without the "RFC perspective" and without the sponsors board behind it. Again, tomorrow's newspapers will be full of it but the content will not be driven by the club. The photos accompanying it again will not have the sponsors names behind it. This is probably the last big bit of news to come out of Punt Road for the year and the club has missed the chance to direct how it is reported.

Did you also put a similar view forward when we signed Hardwick? If so you were proven wrong then.

how can they direct it?

if he's retiring thats it.

recall the players highs and lows, discuss reason for moving on, and maybe (maybe) what's next

thats it

nothing new will be added much, and the media will go over the drug thing with their own bent regardless

by dragging it out a day extra, they get another 24 hours of media attention

You wouldnt think there would be a press conference to announce Cuz is playing on again as there wasnt one last year when he got another 1 year contract.
Id say its to announce Cuz has retired .....blah blah blah blah.......

I honestly don't remember which probably shoots my arguement right out of the water.

I just think the club could have taken control of the chatter about it. The world won't end either way.

A lot of drama regarding a veteran player for a team 15th on the ladder.

You think all the hype has to do with the club or the reformed drug addict, brownlow medalist, & premiership player?

Cousins brought a lot more to our club than drama.

I'd be proud of the club if they decided to keep him a month ago, but are milking this for all it's worth. Could help in negotiations with our new sponsors.

Not just any old player and not just any old club!

I have become a great fan of Cuz. He has given another dimension to our team and I will miss him in No 32 if he leaves.
No matter what, I will always be interested in his future career and I wish him well.

Really sad to hear that this is probably it for Cousins. Made me really proud of us to give him a go, and he earned enormous respect for himself with his resilience and leadership in his return.
So wish he'll say he'll be playing on.

Keep him at the club somehow if he retires, either midfield coach/skills coach, whatever...........would be worth the money!

Imagine Footy Classified tonight ::)

You wont be able to keep the smiles of Caro's and Hutchy's faces tonight!

Anyway if it is true??...All i will say is Well done to the RFC for giving cuz a second chance in life and footy :clap... and thank you Cuz for your services to the RFC and us supporters :clap

It'll be a shame if he retires and I would hope that it's been his decision and not the club's.

In my view, he could have played on next season as the younger players would have benefitted from his on-field presence. He's hardly keeping a young, talented and developing midfielder out of the team as we simply don't have that many. If that did ultimately become the case and Ben lost form, the situation could have been re-visited during the 2011 year.

I'm glad that we took a punt and recruited him - been beneficial both ways. He's given plenty to the players around him and the supporters. The game he played last week against Melbourne was very good - by anyone's standards - young or old player alike.
