Re: Cousins a must for Tigers

I have never once in this thread said I am categorically in favour of getting him to Richmond as you posted.

I have only said I would look at him as a potential PSD option if he is re-registered and seemingly has his life back on track(neither confirmed yet) but even then I would still have major doubts.

Come seasons end and weighing up both Richmond's & Ben's situations, I still have considerable reservations about taking him. Too many and enough to say a definitive NO.

I hope that makes my position re Cousins clearer for you momentai. The Ben Cousin's circus can head to another town.

i agree but there are circumstances where you would jump at the opportunity to get a cousins cheap. one of those circumstances is if you think your premiership window is open.
the other would be if you had nothing but mostly kids in your onball/mid brigade. to me we are in neither circumstance.

Claw,
I see Cousins as an addition to our forward line maybe right forward pocket or right half forward flank below a Schulz Richo or Simmo knocking the ball down. Still think he has much to offer if we are to develop a goal kicking midfield.
Our prospects here Connors, Cotchin, Deledio, Edwards, Foley, Morton and Whitey plus another this year, are far more likely to learn that game from Ben than they are from either Royal or Johnson.

Not to you in particular but I can't get over the hypocracy I am hearing about Cousins. The guy was perhaps the best player in the game 96 to 06 and while we sit in the doldrums with yet another 3 for 3 player exchange, supporters are lining up to cry foul.

We sit at the bottom in terms of performance over the last twenty-five years. In fact we have a steel like grip on it.
And at no opportunity cost we have a chance to bring in someone who has and can play the game at an elite level, or keep Johnson.

Just the marketing of our first game could cover his 09 fee.

Are we afraid of failure or just uncomfortable with the unknown?

You can now add Collingwood as a resounding NO as well:

From today's Herald Sun:

Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse met Cousins twice in Melbourne this year.
As recently as last month, after two more meetings with Cousins in Perth, the club was determined to add him to their list next year.
COLLINGWOOD secretly discussed Ben Cousins with Victoria's top police officer before deciding not to recruit the fallen football star.
Magpie management spoke to Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon in recent weeks about Cousins, whom the club had been eager to recruit.
They hired a private investigator to monitor his behaviour and assess his rehabilitation.
The investigator spoke to Cousins' confidants, former teammates and WA police.
But after exploring his recent behaviour and progress from every angle, they decided it was too dangerous a proposition to recruit him.

Good move by Collingwood, of course the ferals are up in arms about it, as is Ricky Nixon. It wouldn't surprise me if Christine Nixon told Collingwood that Cousins was still keeping extremely questionable company. While he has the right to, its going to come up in the media every time he's seen with someone like that.

No way should we be interested in picking him up.

Was always going to be a long shot at the Pies once they decided to keep Didak.
Benny's running out of options and this latest PR won't help one bit.

Was interested to hear Nixon say that he felt that Ben's ability to cope with his ongoing problems would be greatly assisted by being part of a football club environment.

I think he is absolutely right on this and for that reason Collingwoods actions in giving this kind of publicity to its decision not to seek to take Ben, was both mean spirited and hypocritical.

No doubt this unwanted and unnecessary publicity has also had its effect on Cousins and this just to try and make the Pies look good.

In case I havn't made it clear I seriously do not like Collingwood.

If Christine Nixon has leaked information about Cousins, she needs to be shown the door. She has no right discussing this with Collingwood.

Just goes to show how valuable a spot on an AFL list these days that an teams official would bother to discusss with the police commisioner whether it would or wouldn't be a prudent move.

Seems it's everyone's fault but Benny's again.
Maybe he should be taking stock of the company he keeps if he wants to reignite his career.
After all it's he who has to do the convincing that he is on the straight and narrow & worth another chance.
Seems Collingwood aren't convinced.

Exactly Tooheys!

He has to accept responsibility for his actions, and just as importantly, his inactions where appropriate - its Ben's career - no one elses.

What does that make the other 14 clubs who didn't even considered taking him? How does Collingwood having a look and then deciding not to take him make them maen spirited and hypocrites?

What a load of codswobble. I hate Collingwood but they don't owe Cousins anything, what they do owe is their supporters to do everything possible to ensure they get a player who won't damage the club. As far as I can see thats exactly what they've done.

Depends, did Cousins sign anything giving approval for a police check.

Why would he sign anything at this stage when he doesn't even know if the AFL will allow him to play?

That would be a massive mistake.

Police checks are run on potential employees all the time. They’re standard for many companies.

What’s the big deal?
