Sheeds coach and Richos last season Captain and one of two or three assistant coaches along with the likes of Chris Bond Wayne Campbell Craig Lambert. Long time since the Afl had a captain coach Jezza Ditterich Whitten come to mind. Lets lob a grenade, Sheeds coach with Richo Captain/Assistantcoach on field recognised leader and looked after in training rehab preseason not unlike Robert Harvey who was nursed through an extra couple of seasons. A career full forward like Barry Hall would take pressure of Richo and assist in the grooming of Morton and Riewoldt. I can see a potentially very strong forward line next year.

for me:

no to Sheeds
no to Richo as a playing assistant coach
no to Richo being captain (too late - let him focus on playing)
no to Lambert (loves QLD apparently - no interest in moving)
no to Bond (like Bondy, but sounds like he is focusing on the admin side after missing the senior coaching roles)

Personally, I'm still 50/50 on either Hardwick or Richardson.

But what I am certain about is that K.Sheedy should be an excellent senior coaching mentor.
A Grandad type.

Whoever is chosen as senior coach, given the RFC Culture, will need a mentor, if just to keep on the straight and narrow.

(I wonder if straight & narrow applies to the footy corridor?  ;) )

Interesting the changing odds though!

I think if you can't get Buckley you take a serious look at Rawlings if he performs. The only others i'd look at are Laidley and Hardwick

Hardwick or Sheedy for mine.
Buckley is a disaster waiting to happen. No permiership experience, no coaching experience. At least hardwick and sheedy offer that.

Not Cameron please. We've had too many Bulldog failures in recent past.

I'm surprised there isnt a bit more enthusiasm about Leigh Tudor's credentials:

* has coached his own side in the VFL side to a flag
* played in the good years at Geelong under Blight including two GF's
* was in the Geelong system as they rebuilt to a flag
* is now part of the team at the saints who seemed to have turned that club around

Surely this is a better credentialled background on paper than say Leon Cameron (and certainly Wayne Campbell).

FWIW my preferences (without knowing any of the candidates and in no particular order) are Tudor, Hinkley and Richardson.

Good post LLH.

Tudor does fly under the radar a bit but I am sure he doesn't inside footy/AFL circles. If he is the right man hopefully it will be evident.

Take your point about background, it is the biggest thing going for say...Hardwick...but it's not the be all and end all. However I agree it is a vital consideration.

I wouldn't underestimate Cameron though, nor would I undervalue him doing a long apprenticeship to someone like Eade (who was mentored by Barassi). Not the ideal background of premiership success, granted, but personally, I have a lot of respect for Eade and think he would be one of the smartest tactical minds going around. Cameron is intelligent, has an outstanding character and is very much a straight shooter, tells players what they need to hear rather than tries to be their best friend.

I'm not saying he is a clear favourite or even the best choice, merely that there is generally a dark horse who comes from the pack in these processes when done thoroughly and I'm tipping it would be Leon if so.

If Bucks hasn't coached yet, how do you know he is "a disaster waiting to happen". And by the way, what are next week's winning lotto numbers?

Thanks Scooty. Roughly how I thought you might frame it up. I'll be very interested to see how you would update things as scraps fall from the interview table.

My cousin suggested Lambert, who is a name I hadn't even considered before, but he did do an apprenticeship under Lethal. I personally wouldn't want him as coach immediately, but if the club go for Sheedy (looking increasingly likely) I'd prefer him to have Lambert as his assistant being groomed to take over the reins in a few years than Campbell. Nothing can remove the aura of failure that follows Campbell around.

Yeh, interesting you bring up Leigh Tudor.

I remember him more for his time in the North Melbourne U19s in the late 80s, I think.

Got traded to Geelong and became a hardworking, best clubman type, similar to our Matty White.

He ticks some of the boxes.

Must say, I really haven't anyone get in my ear about Tudor as I have for Hardwick & Richardson.

I'll keep an open mind.

So the list of potential coaches is:
Viney
Leppitch
Brad Scott
Hinkley
Hardwick
Williams
Campbell
Rawlings
Longmire
Tudor
Cameron
Sumich
Sheedy
Buckley

Have I missed anyone?
