Welcome Tom Brown

Only saw the first half, but seemed OK, uses the ball pretty well.
Second game back, from a long spell, can cut him a little slack

I thought he looked fairly good today, he's a nice kick of the footy etc, but it comes down to that "need" question. Who would he replace in the AFL team? Those that play his position are Vlastuin and Broad. The only way he gets into the team over the next 2-3 years is through injury or if we trade Vlastuin for a good pick.

Laconic, no intensity and no impact.
Another low possession game.
Thank god for the kick ins to pad his disposal count
Kick ins only count as a stat if he runs them out of the goal square. How many times out of his 21 (17 kicks) did he do that?

If the data is true Tom has grown 7cm and 10kg since he was drafted. That is heaps and normally associated with kids around age 15-16. Adjusting to a completely different body should not be dismissed lightly.

What people forget is that Allen was only 191cm in his draft year. That is probably why Richmond and 16 other clubs didn’t draft him earlier even though he won the Larke medal. This is a classic case of us being experts in hindsight, at the time there was serious doubts he would be a key position player but a late growth spurt has been a huge bonus for the Eagles.
Ryan Maric magically grew 3cms on the day he was drafted by West Coast. Hard to know if the measurements are correct especially when considering TBR's account of how clubs measure player's height.

Maria was reportedly 193cm pre draft, what are the Eagles claiming his height at now?

At least 10 from a total of 16 points scored. If not more.
Took every kick in when he was on the ground.
As I’ve stated before, no one kicks out from the square anymore and he definitely didn’t yesterday.
I’m obviously riding him hard because we reached for him at pick 17 and I’m trying to understand why. I hope he starts to show why but his first 2 games back have been totally underwhelming. I’ll keep reporting it as I see it and not fussed who agrees or disagrees.

*And he’s definitely not 193cm. Looks around the 185cm mark when I stood next to him yesterday

Your premise that good players can only play in one position really has me wondering if Hutchy will actually call.

Obviously not my premise at all, but Brown (like Vlastuin before him) seems only really suited to that half back area. Where else do you see him playing?

Some players are a lot more flexible than others in terms of where they could play, and from what I've seen from Brown he's that half back type. Can he play mid - probably not, is he competitive enough to play half forward - again probably not. Possibly could play on the wing but he doesn't scream like a player than can be played in multiple positions.

Josh Fahey also developing well, I said it at the time but we not only picked a flanker but picked an inferior version given the talent on the board. This is Clarke's Corey Ellis moment, I really hope we get things sorted at next year's draft, it's ok to make mistakes from time to time but there needs to be a change of focus if things aren't working out.

Heard a spews fan even ranting about missing out on JVR on radio, despite having 2 Coleman medalists in the team.

I'd still take Johnson, I think he's a rarer commodity for a late first rounder. I reckon there will be another Allen or JVR in future drafts, just as aside, Buller kicked 5 in a promising debut, there's another potential KF miss.

Why ride *him* hard though? He didn't ask to be taken at that pick, before or after anyone else.
Sure, if you're so aggrieved after 18 months, have a go at our recruiting team. I fail to see what you're doing to support a player our club has drafted.
Pretty Immature approach I'd have thought though, as clubs draft for a player in their 3rd or 4th year, not who they are in their second.

You do understand it’s a forum for discussion?
Aren’t you supposed to be a moderator?
But you obviously prefer homogeneous fanboy discussions.
You’re welcome to hang out with your apologist mates instead of name calling those willing to challenge the status quo or perhaps even add some interesting observations on players rather than just dispute what others are saying.

Exactly... once you are picked at whatever number, that's it. All you owe is to do the best you can.

Pick numbers become these mystical signifiers for the whole of someone's career, it's kind of weird.

They are useful to judge the relative success of scouting and drafting I guess, but it's still really just a numbers game.

Yes, but you still haven't answered the question, have you?
You haven't been name called. I've said your approach to judging a player is immature. It lacks nuance. The fact you've answered in that manner rather than answer the question probably says you're unhappy being challenged yourself.
So, why "ride" Brown? He hasn't asked to be picked, before, after any particular player. If anything, you gripe I think is with the recruiting staff.
Generally, for any player, are they allowed to build their performances after a lengthy lay-off through injury, or are you expecting they are at peak abilities immediately after returning to the park?
