Welcome Tom Brown

What was expected of someone having his first game for a long time.
More than 9 touches playing half back. Which included 4 kick ins.
Also wasn't exactly praised
"Played down back in his first game for the year. He didn't have a huge offensive output, but what I saw from him defensively was a real willingness to defend, and it's a really good starting point for his season.”

Sounds realistic for a kid who hasn’t played a competitive match for about 10 months, as distinct from some of the expectations on here.

Leysy wasn't convinced on JVR at the time, but the jury is in. He is a serious talent and perfect for what we need(ed).

There was a lot of whinging on here because we didn't take a key forward in the mid-season draft. Not worried about that because the chances of getting a talent to help us in that area is very low.

Yes hindsight for some (not all) but we *smile* the JVR/Brown pick up. That is the one we had a great chance to help fix our forward line, and that will hurt for many years.

Hopefully the club reviews the logic behind the decision making at the time, to alleviate making the same mistake in the future.
CJ over Oscar Allen is another recent howler.

What people forget is that Allen was only 191cm in his draft year. That is probably why Richmond and 16 other clubs didn’t draft him earlier even though he won the Larke medal. This is a classic case of us being experts in hindsight, at the time there was serious doubts he would be a key position player but a late growth spurt has been a huge bonus for the Eagles.

Hasn't played football since before March. Just soak that up for a minute. His first season he averaged 13.9 disposals a game in 2022. You're clutching at straws in angst at where we are and what our picks are currently doing. I think it was probably on par for a 2nd year kid who hasn't played a game for 4 points since 20/8/2022 (he had 19 disposals that day).

Also, from AFL.com
"the official ruling around the new kick-in rule on Thursday and as per previous seasons there will no disposal given when a player kicks-in while clearly still in the square."
How many of those 4 did he play on and run out of the square?

Makes Coulthard's debut extraordinary then considering he’s come from a bush league as a part time footballer.
Happy for others to accept mediocrity from a pick 17 although I’m certainly not calling him a bust until I see how the rest of the season plays out. But he’d want to improve.

And what player kicks from the square these days?

Was Coultard coming from 3 months on the injured list before the game?

You do understand that once rehab is completed, a player is only bought in when fully fit?
He couldn’t get near the ball. That’s not just rusty.
Coulthard has never been in a professional environment. Comes in, has one training session, flies to Sydney, doesn’t know his team mates or our game plan and gets involved.
Please keep making excuses but I won’t be satisfied until I at least some above average results.

Spot on, huge growth spurt, it's usually 2-3cm at best.

I do understand actually. But there's a difference between running laps and picking up the flow of a game. There's a reason why when Nanks comes back, his first couple of games aren't much to right home about and he builds into it week after week. A kid in his 2nd year on the list isn't necessarily going to just turn it on in the first game. If you think that's possible for every single player on a list, you'd better not apply for the coaching role. You're gonna be mighty frustrated.

My last response to you on this.
1. Nanks was in the bests in his first game back so your point is moot.
2. No one, including myself, was expecting him to “turn it on” in his first game back. But he was bog ordinary.
I’m also glad you’re not applying for the coach’s role because you clearly accept mediocrity

It's not about accepting mediocrity or not. It's about realising that not everyone is going to get 20 possies in their first game back. There's a physical and a mental side to returning to play. Clearly you don't "get it". You don't judge a player by 1 game back after 3 months off competitive footy.
If at the end of the year he's still performing the same way, I'd be getting concerned. But I expect we'll see the performance graph go up, not plateau.

Laconic, no intensity and no impact.
Another low possession game.
Thank god for the kick ins to pad his disposal count

Thought Brown (along with Banks and Sonsie) looked composed and classy with ball in hand.
