Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

with Yarran and Recce being out for the first half of the year there may be an opportunity for young George to shine, hopefully he can start the vfl season with some decent performances.

Would not be surprised to see him debut next week.

Good game tomorrow and I think he is a big chance.

I think C.Ellis and/or Mendaue would get a hb rebound role before George gets a rd 1 game. Or push B.Ellis back as he's proven there and Menadue takes his wing role, etc.

No nab games to rd 1 debut would be pretty surprising.

Then why the elevation to the main list?

For me he provides that burst of speed out of our back half similar to what Yarran could do.

I read they gave him a different role in the VFL. Playing in the middle and up forward. Sound like he was good inside and had good spread from the contest.

Anyone who saw the VFL comment?

Playing forward/mid might help in using his strengths without too much exposure to his key weakness of turning it over coming out of defence.

Really liked this bit.

"Castagna found himself further afield, splitting his time between forward and midfield in a move that worked to great effect. His classy goal on the run from 45 metres out in the second term highlighted his poise, and his nine tackles, nine contested possession and seven clearances showcased his ability to compete."

A contested ball winner with a bit of pace, sounds just what we need. Obviously just being trialled there so I don't expect him to play next week, but this is worth watching out for.

I'm pleased to see him doing well at VFL level but the knock on him in all the times I have seen him is his rushed disposal & decision making.
That's going to be hard to clean up at AFL level, especially given the number of goals we're already giving up to turnovers.
Has some good traits though, his run and carry and link up work are very good. Given we have a need at HB for some more run he'd have to be close to a game.

I would be happy if he is played this week on a big ground. If he is quick and can tackle he has two traits that we lack.

This is the week to bring him in if ever. Our ball movement from the back half is stodgy and predictable. Teams are shutting us down too easily.
It's clear to me that we need a speedy link player in the back half who can run and carry & break the lines.. Lids or Yarran would be ideal but they're not available.
At the risk of bringing in another with questionable disposal, I think it's time to see what George has got..

Yep. Leysy would bring him in for Corey Ellis.

George's sudden reinvention as a high forward/mid seems odd considering our need for an attacking defender right now. Suggests the coaches are wary of his disposal IMO. He might debut soon but it may not be as a back.

Even though we are screaming for another attacking HB to help Houli out, I think this might be his best position. We need a breakaway mid just as badly.

Turning another defender into a forward. Awesome. :p

I agree with this. We have identified that his disposal off half back is a concern so we will reinvent him to mitigate the risk. Then again, wouldn't surprise me if we say to him "you know how you were a half back and we reinvented you as a forward/mid, we might need to unreinvent you and play you off half back in the 1s".
