Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

The lady behind me today said George was her least favourite player. I replied that he's my favourite and that he was a monty to kick that goal from on 50. This game was Agent Chaos in all his exhilarating glory. Has there ever been a more exciting, yet agricultural footballer?

George had an absolute shocker.
9 disposals,1 tackle, 5 turnovers, 3 clangers, zero 1%ers, DE 44.4%. Not sure how many dropped marks and fumbles he had. Too bloody many.
One nice goal * I think he must have been trying to pass it  even Bolton chuckled.

Plenty of critics pan Aarts, McIntosh, Ralph-Smith and others but seemingly overlook this bloke. The luckiest 3 time premiership player ever.

I think he should turn the cartoon tattoo machine off for a while and work on how to catch the ball, handball and kick. You know, the basics that haven’t improved since he started playing. For all his experience and seniority…geezus
It took the MC most of last season to work out how poor he was playing, hopefully with some players returning and some youngsters building fitness and strength, the pressure is on
He also spoiled Lynch’s mark at least once. I can’tstandim anymore

Last night every footy show highlighted why this champion is a 3 time premiership player.
His 2nd & 3rd efforts are unbelievable.
One highlight of him going from one tackle to laying another tackle and then sprinting to give a option going forward.
Just proves why he is one of the first selected..

I still like George - he does a lot of hard running up the ground that often goes unrewarded, but is of high team value regardless.

But yeah, I counted at least twice where he dropped in front of Lynch and got in the way. Not sure if this is a George thing, or symptomatic of a broader lack of communication in the forward line at the moment.

I like George as he will always be a Tiger immortal in our golden era, however he is fortunate in that he was drafted by a team which valued speed and pressure above all else. If he was drafted by another team which placed skill and composure as their main traits, then it's fair to say that he wouldn't have played as many games as he currently has. Perhaps he might not be on a AFL list at all.

However we need to continually evolve to keep up with the pack, and I feel that one of the ways to do this would be to upgrade George with a player with more upside. This is the best that George will get - he has maxed out his ability and output. I would have thought that with experience his composure would improve but it looks like its getting worse.

George is very much team orientated and plays the role assigned to him week in week out, often with little reward. My only gripe with him other than his unpredictable goal kicking is far too often when he marks he stops and doesn't know what to do next so slowing any momentum we may have had

We said goodbye to our romantic favourite footballer and Richmond Life Member in Towner (romantic in so far as we looove how he touches up the opposition). Is it close to time for Captain Chaos? Are we waiting for Rioli to be AFL standard?

Jokes aside, as our forward line gets taller and slower (Soldo_Nank/Jack) our need for someone to chase hard becomes critical. Can't see George being dropped in the short term unless we have someone in the ressies who is a tackling machine and has wings on their heels.

Yep. There was one play where I reckon Georgie chased n harassed about half a dozen Gee Whizz players as they were flicking n fumbling the ball around in their back half trying to find an easy exit while all our boys simply folded back and covered everything ahead of them. Georgie fair worked his arse off solo n completely unrewarded to try n keep Gee Whizz from getting out cheap.

And didn't lay a tackle. Yeah a class above not!
they're trying to tackle him
And a great set shot from long range by Captain Chaos! As always! :))
Ok maybe not, always.

Remembering KB used to get accused of non tackling and his response was always quick.
"It's hard tackle someone when you've got the ball!"
I think one of the main reasons George continually gets games is the Chaos factor it creates for Oppo sides.
It's a real Forrest Gump moment, you don't know what you are going to get.
Occasionally that's an issue for us as well as the oppo.
In the main in the last 4 years prior to 21 it has served us very well.

Let Chaos reign! :))

Suppose in our metrics we place a high value on D50 intercept marks. First up our players are trained and focus on I50 use, on not kicking it to an unmanned defender. We're usually good at this.

But we still have to send it in under pressure. And that's when the ball can miss our preferred target and slew off to the advantage of one or more of their defenders.

When George is hopelessly out of position he can halve these. He doesn't spoil the ball as much as he does the opponent, or he amazingly gets front position and spills the chest mark. He hits these like a man 10kg heavier. This is his unique ability. He can win ground ball too and that is hard to do inside 50.

In 2020-21 George was playing more as a small. His goal numbers and tackle numbers dropped. To be fair to him he was batting a little down the order in 2020, and 2021 was not a happy time for our forwards. His numbers dropped as our prospects plummeted.

In the olden days there were players dubbed "Crazy Horse". George would certainly have worn that nick in the 70s. But in the 70s it was ok to be a crazy horse. A bit less so these days.

George has great talents but his mistakes are sometimes spectacular and that can make some of us cringe and pour scorn on him. Fair enough - we've all got our whipping boys.

But George Castagna is a proven finals campaigner with unique abilities and a fearless approach to the game. A vastly superior player to our own silky Dan Butler, whom we moved on to keep George. Rightly.

RFC values what George does, even after three Premiership years of his getting it spectacularly wrong or right.

He's not Kane Lambert Dimma.
I can see what they're doing with George but he just doesn't have the offensive game.
I actually think he's a key part of the problem.

Incredible sacrificial act by Castagna midway through the 3rd qtr last night - and the poor bugger might not even get an assist for it.

When George was lining up that set shot from about 50m to the PRE goal - he was an absolute certainty to sink it. It would have been another long straight perfectly spinning drop punt sailing through the big sticks at mid post height and into the flag wavers of the cheer squad.

But the replay shows George’s eyes darting about as he directed his teammates upfield to move into specific positions short of the square. It was a set play. George didn’t need the personal glory and instead executed the routine that he and Bolton been practising on all week at training. Fortunately Shai was able to finish with that left foot snap from the boundary exactly as George had been demonstrating at training.

Not sure why the calls for him to be dropped? He had a decent game. And has had a decent year. He's not getting dropped.

Those who call for him to be dropped don’t really understand his role in the team. His running between the arcs is crucial for us. Does it for 4 quarters. Until someone else can do that for 120 minutes then he is here to stay.
