Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

Not sure if it's been previously mentioned, but one of the things Georgie does that I love is that he is always prepared to put his body on the line and fly for marks that others his size probably wouldn't. He is often going up against much bigger opposition and most of the time 1/2's the contest.

That is clearly the one thing that seperates him from others. Very physical presence for a small player in the air.

He's very physical all round.

There are tackles, then there are George tackles. They are vice like!!

People forget he's coming of ZERO pre-season or practice/reserves games.

He's building into the season perfectly.

And remember he is ALWAYS picked when fit. Hasn't played a two's game in forever.

Just when we now get our pressure game back on the back of an 8 tackle, 63 pressure point game from George punters think he is close to dropped.

Crazy talk.

Well implanted in the team when he produces those numbers. Integral to our game plan.

The wild attack dog is BACK!!

I’m hoping it’s a mental thing more than a base skill issue. Even if it isnt he can practice hitting moving targets with a handball (skill) or get his brain working a little slower so the handball can hit the target Aka dan Jackson improvement. . Same for set shot goal kicking. If he fixed these two basic glaring errors he would be one of the better small forwards going around as the intensity courage and speed are all pretty good. I’m glad he kicked that last goal as hopefully helps his confidence. It was one of the better run ins I’ve seen him do without the stuttering etc.

Agree leysey. Actually forgot he had no pre season at all.

George is frustrating with the ball but there is no one better without the ball. Like a greyhound he chases and chases and sometimes is nowhere near his man but never lets up. For this he'd be one of the first magnets dimma reaches for.

His aerial contesting importance has always been overrated imo. Just isn't a good mark and often struggled to know when to fly and when to crumb. Defensive pressure is his game. To keep his spot needs to work on his disposal. Defensive pressure has been good last couple of games.

Disagree. Essentially played as a key forward when we won a flag. It's not about marking when you are his height its about contesting and stopping the opposition from taking the mark. It definitely wasn't overrated when we won a flag.

Agree that his contesting for marks was extremely important in 2017 especially when he’d occasionally take a good one - so the opposition had to take his marking threat seriously. Now that was when we had only Jack as a big target along with Caddy and then the mosquitos - so George was a genuine marking option.

Now with Jack, Lynch and Caddy there is less need for George to compete in the air. The questions are whether that part of his game has been made redundant and then whether his ground level game is better than the alternatives.

It is if you're a small player and you're not taking the marks. That's one less small on the ground crumbing. I'd much rather see Reiwoldt and Lynch going for the marks, clunking a few, kicking them through for goals, or otherwise bringing the ball to ground than Castagna flying and missing most marks and out of the contest and missing easy set shots from marks when he does clunk them. We have to get past the 2017 flag game plan. Time has moved on and the game plan evolves. If Castagna is to keep his position he has to bring the pressure game he showed on Saturday every week and take his chances better when goal opportunity presents. Otherwise I see others flying past him. From a pressure act point of view Castagna had the most with 62 (30%+ above his average) but Bolton had 40, Caddy 42, Higgins 52, Baker 51, even Lynch had 32. Only Rioli struggled with 31 but he was carrying a corkie. Impressive all round performance as a whole group. The pressure on Castagna is real. Others can do close to what he can do but are much better skilled. If Castagna was simply better skilled he'd be a lock every game. Unfortunately it is a big weakness.

Funny thing is that we've reverted to our 2017 game plan the last couple of weeks n been all the better for it. Georgie is a massive part of that game plan, there's also still a fair bit of game time to be worked on before Jaaack n Lynch get into sinc so that'll mean plenty of ground ball n chaos for Georgie to work with.
Geezer has way more polish than Georgie, but he's out of the side, too much finessing. Georgie's in the side because he's bringing plenty of forward pocket plumber n getting his hands dirty for the team.

Should be his last game for awhile. His handling skills over a loooong period of time are not up to scratch and better smalls will come back and replace for long term imo

8 tackles 14 disposals and 1 goal 1 behind.

Worth thinking about so interesting to see how he goes with the other 3 marking forwards in the team for the first time.

George is a good chest mark as well, either leading or reading the drop zone at the back of a pack.

We still need multiple leading marking threats to create space and be unpredictable. None of our other smalls consistently mark it I50 (unless it’s a team freebie)

Gotta keep the oppo defenders’ attention on many parts, not just 1-2 players.

Hopefully Georgie can present and mark enough to warrant their attention.

George is in the side to chase and either lay a tackle or make the defenders rush their disposal. Anything else is a bonus. He doesn't bring this and he'll be dropped.

People forget George has played just over 50 games and averages a goal and three tackles a game. This year his goal average is down but his possessions (14) and tackles (4.5) are at a career high. He's going OK.
