Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

No one more surprised he kicked the goal from 30m out dead in front than George himself. Thought he deserved his spot last two years because he provided a contested marking option inside 50. Hard to see the need for that role when Jack re-joins Tom. So he has to play high forward and his disposal effectiveness is a liability for that role. At risk to losing his sport to Bolton/Butler IMO.

Measured post bill. I’m a big fan but he must clean up his simple disposal errors or he is at risk from those named. As you point out we have less need for his aerial contesting.

His aerial contesting importance has always been overrated imo. Just isn't a good mark and often struggled to know when to fly and when to crumb. Defensive pressure is his game. To keep his spot needs to work on his disposal. Defensive pressure has been good last couple of games.

Yeah, he plays a role but his disposal skills are well below AFL level. He must have been working on this so it is most likely confidence or something related. There must be a way to improve his disposals.

Perhaps we should have recruited the silky skilled menzel to replace george.

The last thing dimma is looking at is skill level when assessing george.

George brings two positives in that he will contest in the air and bring the ball to the ground plus his pressure. He also brings sub standard disposal skills hence his position in the team depends on those around him

When Jack and Tom are both playing it negates the need for one of his strengths

If Bolton Baker and the like continue to build there pressure acts then unless George improves his disposal his place in the team is in jeopardy

All in all a good place to be in with more than 22 players needing consideration at the selection table

Why Menzel? We have plenty right now competing for that small forward role. All have better defensive pressure skills than Menzel, all have better disposal skills than Castagna. Personally I don't believe that Dimma doesn't care about his disposal and that's the last thing he looks at. Castagna is safe for now but the pressure to hold his spot is high.

Good post, BJ
Castagna could well be fighting for his spot each week (which isn't such a bad thing) now that there are players coming through who provide the selection committee with other options.
He will have to keep on the improve if he is to hold his place. Needs to have a better impact on the scoreboard also.

His stats on the weekend were not that bad.

4 kicks, 10 handballs and 2 marks. Plus he kicked a crucial goal.

Not the worst and he is still very young.

Give him a little slack.

Missed the most important stat... 8 tackles (all of which stuck like superglue).

Thanks JJ. Good point.

Methinks sometimes on here he gets a bit of a raw deal.

Argh, Captain Chaos!

He is great when applying pressure to oppo.

Not great with ball in hands.
Having said that I did think he would kick that goal in the last quarter.

Amazing to think that Chaos and Dusty had both not kicked a goal until this match.

Onwards and upwards.

If Rioli misses I think Chaos plays.

I think it is fair to say that on the form of the last two games, everyone needs to be fit and available for George to potentially miss out.
Can't also rule out that as he works into a season and back from injury his form will continue to improve (incrementally?).
