Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

He's not there to kick goals. It's like saying Astbury should be dropped cos he hasn't kicked a goal. Also with Tom now in the side alongside Jack and Caddy he's probably been told to not fly for marks as muck and stay on the deck.

All forwards are there to kick goals. You'll find very few permanent forwards who haven't kicked a goal in 5 games or only 4 out of 16 games. You just can't carry players who don't kick goals. It's one of the reasons Townsend has struggled to find his way back in, his goal kicking dropped off. If he's no longer flying for marks (which he hardly ever took anyway) then he should be kicking even more goals as a crumbing forward.

Bolton came in and played well, his tackling was quite good. He's better in the air than George, and has more x factor. His pressure looked to be ok, not as good as George. But when push comes to shove for spots when Dusty, Jack, Bachar and Chimp start coming back into side, i'd rather Bolton stay in the side than George if it comes down to between the two of them.

Bolton had 36 pressure acts, Castagna 43 (which was 30%+ more than his average for 2017/2018). So he's not far off in that department if he can keep that consistency and he has infinite more skill than Castagna. SOme of Bolton's disposal was opposition breaking in terms of freeing up his man into space, something Castagna has no idea about. As an example, yeah he had 3 goal assists but his 1 metre handball to McIntosh was a poor decision as McIntosh was very hot and too close to him to create separation from an opponent. KMac was just good enough to get it onto his boot and have it bounce through for a goal (just mind you). A Bolton would have held onto that and made a better decision. Castagna likely won't be dropped on his performance, he was pretty good defensively (much better than his average) but his replacement will be someone who can maintain a similar sort of pressure but also make better decisions and execution with ball in hand

Townsend is not in the team coz he can't run

No he's not in the team because he stopped kicking goals. He was also a defensive forward expected to kick at least some goals. Both Townsend and Castagna have significant flaws.

Thanks for those stats tigerlove

With Bolton having more skills than Castagna, all he has to do is maintain that level with his tackling and pressure acts, and Castagna's "replacement" will be Bolton.
By that i mean Castagna should go out for the Chimp when he comes back, or even for Dusty this week.

Agree Harry.

I think we caught up in the emotion of the game. Upon reflection he did all of what he is asked of. A goal here and there would nice though.

It’s against human nature to take the emotion out of big skill errors or to judge forwards on more than a single individual statistic (kicking goals).

Create 4 and kick 1, or create 5, it’s exactly the same.

4 + 1 = 5
5 + 0 = 5

The scoreboard doesn’t have emotions.
It just says “Richmond”.

Also against human nature to judge forwards on more than 1 game. In 3 games, zero goals and 3 goal assists. In 2018 1.2 goals and 0.6 goal assists. His disposal efficiency in 2019 is 54%. For someone who is only getting 30% of total disposals as contested and more handballs than kicks that is far too low. His last game probably saves him but he is going to have to maintain that pressure (well above his average) and start kicking some goals here and there to maintain his spot in the side with the 3 Bs breathing down his neck (Baker, Bolton, Butler). As they say competition for spots is a good thing.

This is mostly correct but you also need a subtraction column for opportunities burnt relative to par. It’s the goals we didn’t kick we should have or goals we gave away we shouldn’t have (kamdens nutmeg kick on broad, Graham’s dropped chest mark, grimes miscentre) you also need to factor in. The good thing now with mindfulness is these errors don’t be seem to be affecting the team the way they did 4+ years ago.

The mindfulness is incredible for helping the team move on from these mistakes. The coach seems very forgiving too. Concerted effort by the whole club to just blink at these emotionally-charged errors.

Missed opportunities is a rough factor. Technically, the scoreboard doesn’t care, it just keeps waiting so we can’t say -1 goal. If we want to subtract for missed opportunities then we need to factor in salary cap space, because the only way to reduce skill errors is with better raw talent.

So we’ve got to keep the 16-26 best players in perspective relative to how much of the pie they’re required to use. Then the question is: Is there a better way to capitalise on George’s occasional missed opportunities without paying more in the salary cap + without losing what he does provide?

I think he’s a great moneyball player in that his flaws are in areas where it’s buman instinct to get frustrated when watching... but that’s one of the ways we hold an edge over most other clubs. Everyone else turns over players who make large mistakes now and then.

I’m not saying I wouldn’t like to see him improve on it though ;D

There’s some truth here.
8 goals from his last 9 games.

The AFL player ratings attempts this. (as distinct from fantasy rankings). Graham, Castagna and KMac all rated in the bottom third of our players. Something that's obvious to students of the game but not some who rate effort, chaos and turnovers.

Check out last weeks rankings in the twitter feed. https://www.afl.com.au/stats/player-ratings/ratings-hub
