I do like George's pressure. What I don't like are his skill errors & I think this levels him out to be a disposable player.

Agree it is the constant harrassment in the forward line why he is there. If that drops off he should not be there.

I reckon there is a role for three out of Daniel, George, Butts, Bolton and Baker in the team once we get both Cotch and Dusty back in. Daniel obviously plays and the most in form two of the other four play. It's a good position to be in. George is one of our best without the ball. Every player has things to work on and his is his composure when he gets it and nailing the simple shots on goal.

Needs to get better with the ball , but wouldnt surprise if Hardwick thinks Bolton for example , needs to get better with his pressure ,

We have competition for spots and thats a good thing , Butler being dropped should have them all on notice .

Had a chat here earlier in the week and it looks like jase isn’t in the team to kick goals.
he’s rarely out of the team.
His goals have dried up but his assists and tackles have gone up.
So for those who reckon guys are picked on goal quantities... think again.

Preventing ball leaving our coring zone is a role.

Like broady doesn’t often get 20 touches but he does get picked every week.
Plays his role.

I'd prefer Butler in Georges place. I get that Butler does choose some bizarrely stupid options on the field, but he can be mercurial, and is a better user of the ball than George.

In addition to his hassling and tackling George used to have the ability to fly for big pack marks. Mostly it was the contest that was important - but from time to time he managed to snag a real good contested mark.
And the fact that there was always a chance that he'd grab one was itself a threat to the opposition i.e. it was one of his assets.
Now I've got no stats to back it up - but has this marking threat now gone from his game?
And with Tom, Jack and Caddy as genuine marking threats up forward - it means Georgie's marking is now basically a redundant asset.

He's not there to kick goals. It's like saying Astbury should be dropped cos he hasn't kicked a goal. Also with Tom now in the side alongside Jack and Caddy he's probably been told to not fly for marks as muck and stay on the deck.

Bolton came in and played well, his tackling was quite good. He's better in the air than George, and has more x factor. His pressure looked to be ok, not as good as George. But when push comes to shove for spots when Dusty, Jack, Bachar and Chimp start coming back into side, i'd rather Bolton stay in the side than George if it comes down to between the two of them.

Hey? One plays as a forward and one plays as a defender! Not sure using Astbury is a good comparison.

I’m sure when he takes shots from within 25 metres he’s meant to kick them.

Or handballs to a teammate 3 metres away, he hits him. Basic football skills. At least he hit a teammate very 2nd time he tried

For years, it seems Dimma generally ignores the worst 10% or so of skill errors with ball in hand.

His selection history looks like a moneyball approach to me. One really frustrating kick or handball that costs a goal instinctively alters our natural rating of a player more than anything else. It’s the strongest emotion, in the most spotlight-heavy part of a player’s game. So, it’s most susceptible to natural human biases.

The question with George IMO is not “can he stop stuffing it up” but how many allowable mistakes is too many?

I think Castagna is a must stay in the team. People remember the odd missed handball or missed shot on goal but will overlook the constant harrassing, pressure, tackling and goal assists he provides. He directly provided 3 handballs to team mates that directly resulted in goals (his hands are actually very slick), he had 6 tackles, gets to the right spots & just makes us look like a tight, manic, pressured unit in the fwd line; i think he is pretty vital to our fwd setup and the ball does not come out so easy comapred to when he is not there. He does alot of the hard-working, grunt stuff that doesn't get recognised so much or appreciated enough.

Yeh his skills especially by foot can be very scratchy but i think he will start hitting the scoreboard soon, he had an interrupted pre-season with injury and i think even now is providing enough and will only get better. He's a bit of an emigma is old George but his positives outweigh the negatives imo. I'd be very surprised and dissappointed if George is dropped.

Agree with Mike. Watched the replay again and george was very involved in the area dimma rates the highest - forward pressure. 6 tackles, a few assists and a high pressure rating ensures he stays in. Dropping george will also impact on bolton who benefits from the chaos and loose balls that george creates. We don't want bolton exerting all his energy having to do the chasing and harassing george does.

Agree Harry.

I think we caught up in the emotion of the game. Upon reflection he did all of what he is asked of. A goal here and there would nice though.

I’m repeating that he’s a reverse alchemist turning gold into lead. Needs to learn how to hit handball targets three metres away and kick set shots from 20m directly in front / slight angle before he’s back in the team for me. Has cost / almost cost multiple games with these errors that I can’t see anyone else making.

Surely these can be fixed in the VFL as they must be above the shoulders.

Has he been dropped before? I can’t recall one.
