Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

Goal kicking has always been his knock, it's not just last Saturday his goal kicking to needs to be better. Apart from that he's having another good season.

Interesting hearing Terry Wallace today on SEN say something to the effect that Dimma would be very happy if he had 7 gettable shots at goal every week because he's not going to miss them all every week and would be encouraging him not contemplating dropping him. I agree. There's plenty of people overreacting in a major way to his game on Saturday night
Key word being “if”. But he doesn’t get 7 gettable shots at goal every week so strange comment from Wallace. He’s had 39 shots at goal (excluding OOTF) so he’s averaging 2.7 shots at goal every week for an average of 1.4 goals a game.

Everyone knows his limitations and I just can't but help wonder why no one runs past him to take the shot. Just needed to happen once last week and we would be singing.

He should be under instruction to give it off at every opportunity.

I thought he may have turned the corner, but over the last 3 or 4 games he has regressed.

He's like a part kelpie/blue heeler chasing a car. Full of endeavour but once the car stops his brain gets in a muddle and then has little idea how to execute the next phase.
He's ok if the car keeps going. No thought or execution required. Just instinct.

I always preferred Castagna as a running half back.

Would try it, we have Stengle and others who could fill the forward role.

Not sure if kicking for goal will ever be his strength.

Actually you're quite right and if 0.5 warrants such harsh criticism then what if ... (and it may be quite a big if ...) he snags 3.2 or 5.0 in the next game or two?
Let's hope he gives it a good go and then I guess we'll find out.

He's never snagged 5.0. He did manage 4.1 in his 9th game against the Lions. Other than that he's kicked 3 goals 3 times. Highest number of scoring shots he's had is 2-4 and 3-3. Kicking for goal is always going to be a bit of a weakness for Castagna so we either take it or leave it. He is a great forward pressure player so does that outweigh the negatives or do we have better talent elsewhere? No doubt though his wayward and panic kicking for goal on the weekend played a large in us losing the game.

Shouldn't be in the side if you need to handball off anywhere inside 50. He would kick 40 + if he could kick straight. Is never going to kick 5 straight , but if he can get that to 3.2 we would be happy

It would be great if he can fix the kicking, and I'm sure it is being worked on.

But the pressure he exerts frees up other players as well as giving him the opportunity to score. We remove Castagna and the opposition have another defender free.

Not a simple equation I reckon.

That's a great analogy Willo. Funny cos it's true

Issue is that he IS in the side and is in it to stay according to Dimma's presser. So my view is that as as team, we need to work around his shortcomings and look for other options.

Before his last 3 games of 0.7 his accuracy was at 58.75% - just under Toby Greene whose career goes at 59.73%. Or Robbie Gray who converts at 60.73%. And, in Toby's first 4 seasons, after 75 games he had kicked 34.29.

I reckon George will improve his accuracy as he gains more experience and improves his composure. Talk of getting rid of him or dropping him is laughable.

Watch them get around him if (bloody hope he does) kicks his first on Friday night!!!!

Geez I hope he does otherwise it will be zero goals in his last 4 games. He hasn't kicked a goal since 17th June. Not a good omen for a small forward.
