Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

Love George and don’t want him dropped. He is a unique package and integral to our setup.

But there is no sugar coating that performance. As a small forward you need to ice at least two of those chances.

12 months ago he was the same. Whatever it is, it can be fixed. Maybe our energetic, positive, happy culture turns those nerves into excitement in front of our roaring finals crowds? Not sure.

One different way to take the pressure off is by judging him on number of scoring shots each week. Don’t label him 0.5, pump him up for being +5 in one match! That’s awesome stuff. Next time he is taking a shot, get all his teammates to take the p!ss out of him and tell him he just needs to score (making him laugh) so he doesn’t feel like everyone is quietly thinking “oh god, not him again”. He just needs to score and he’s already succeeded. Make it a running gag.

Or maybe get him to embrace the fact he’s the worst kick for goal in the team, he’s that kid in The Mighty Ducks who can hit the puck like a king but has abysmal accuracy... and wouldn’t it be a fitting fairytale to finish the season with him being the one to kick the matchwinning goal to get chaired by his teammates after the siren? Plant some new stories in his head.

Whatever they do, I’m confident they’ll succeed with him. He’ll come good by finals. These situations are largely what the club’s culture seems to be about and why we’re so successful now.

Nice pep talk but you’re over-thinking it. He just needs to kick the *smile* goal.

Could be the best small/mid size forward in the competition if he can learn to convert effectively & consistently. Needs a new goal kicking routine with momentum through impact not the stilted stutter approach. Add in hours or repetitive practice. Up to him but we must persevere.

Talk of dropping Castagna is way off the mark. His pressure and ability in the air are so important to our forward set up, only Rioli can claim to be better.

Yes, agree wholeheartedly. He is a defensive forward and a damn good one. But his offensive game was so putrid that you just shake your head.

A schoolboy junior would’ve kicked that set shot, the running into an open goal, even the left foot snap down the other end. I love how is so well defended on PRE these days but there is no defending last night.

I don't think anyone would claim he had a good offensive game, he had a shocker in front of goal but before last night he had kicked more goals than behinds. He'll bounce back.

His set shot kicking is getting worse, has no confidence at all, he's like a golfer with the yips.

People need to understand his position is as a forward, he needs not only to tackle and pressure he needs also to convert the oppounties he gets.
Seriously last night besides maybe one quick snap, the rest were simple shots.
The worse one for me was in the 2nd qtr, forward 50 all open, running straight towards goal and he butchered it.
That's why the Sub rule was good to keep.

As strange as it is George is in the team to compete in the air and create pressure , kicking goals is a bonus, however a performance like that has to put a question mark beside his name, I think he has enough credits in the bank at this point, however with a sharp shooter like Stengle in the magoos is George better going back and getting plenty of shots at goal to get his confidence back up ? Not sure I think his always going to have a poor conversion rate.

Calls for dropping George are crazy.

No doubt yesterday he was horrible in front of goals. But his work rate and ability to get to apply forward pressure was again excellent.

He was also our second best tall forward.

The angst should be channeled towards our midfielders. They were given a spanking.

i like George but his kicking was crap last night and kind of lost us the game. the laughing and joking with a GWS player after the siren was a little obnoxious

Agree. Had a shocker, but still found a way to get 5 oppounties at goal.
Our midfield without graham is tissue paper. Martin wouldnt chase or tackle, Cotchin looked like he spent the night at Star city . Having Grigg in the middle against them last night they might else well put me in there.
That was Cotchins worse game.

George confuses me.

A small forward agree should have kicked 2 of his opportunities and it would have been a different story.

No one mentions that chest mark he dropped early in the game - directly in front - couldn’t believe it.

I think Stengle should be given a run and replace Castagna as Stengle will maintain forward pressure and could become another tackling machine like Rioli.

The trouble with George is we used to laugh when he missed the unmissable goal - trouble is no one laughed last night as it did cost a game in the end.

Using a highly skilled player like Stengle as an example do you think he could contribute more then George at the moment and I don’t mean on the scoreboard as I’m sure Stengle would win that battle, however I’m sure George will win all other categories in been a pressure forward ? And your correct SA George won’t be dropped especially with Butler out

no doubt Aces, he is best 21.

but ... i'm still shaking my head. no amount of defensive pressure excuses that offensive shitshow.

Different players Mr B. Castagna is your hybrid centre half forward. He competes in the air plus is like a cat on a hot tin roof when the ball hits the deck.

Stengle is a finisher. A class with ball in hand but cant do what George does.

It happens Baron. Even Jack has had days like that. Maybe not as bad but he went through a patch where his set shots were off. You don’t drop those blokes. They are still getting their hands on the footy so they are doing most things right.

Agree, no chance Stengle can maintain the pressure Georgie applies.
Could have, should have kicked 5-6 last night
