Welcome to Tigerland - Tim Taranto

Goater strikes as the new Shaun Atley.
Not a bad comparison. Atley was what he was, but had a career.

At the same age Atley got much more ball had more rebound 50 and inside 50s. Similar disposal efficiency.

On the nominal stats Atley had on average - 1 less mark per game, 7 times as many bounces per game, 0.6 less one percenters per game than Goater.

Atley as a ceiling would be a great outcome for North.

Glad you didn’t say winning a premiership is the pass mark which seems to be what some are saying.
Premierships are bloody hard to win, recruiting is really about giving a club a chance to win one.
Ultimately I think these debates are fruitless. Taranto and Hopper are Richmond players and any sort of discussions about woulda/shoulda/coulda is to me a waste of time.
Amen! Can everyone put their crystal balls away and focus on the now?

Here's the rub with Ryan, he's in that category of being too tall for a 60 goal forward. Has there ever been a 206cm gun forward? Stafford was tall, in that range but never a player you structure a forward line around, more the opportunist for the long bomb. Do people envisage a bigger version of Hawkins perhaps? Does Ryan become our ruck & does he have the aerobic capacity to run with elite endurance athletes? The best I can come up with is Rory Lobb looking purely at height alone, Ryan a thicker set so probably more of a threat isolated in the goal square.

Dimma today ;

"We're grooming him more as a key forward. We really like what he brings in that part of the game. The conditions conspired against him (last week). He'll play this week."

I floated Hipwood who is a inch shorter & even Joe Daniher who is another inch shorter as someone who could be the prototype.

Paul Salmon was 206 for his time

Oh god no.

Here's Dan Hoyne from Champion Data on Hipwood:

“We’ve had conversations internally about Eric Hipwood for a little while and without potting Eric too much, the last seven years of any player to play 100 games, he’s the lowest-rated player in the competition,” Hoyne told SEN’s Sportsday.

And Joe Daniher is Joe Daniher.

Tall forwards are definitely getting taller but he would be breaking new ground at that height, no problem giving him a go however, well worth a stab given our current predicament. I'd probably want a more reliable kick than those two, both are ridiculously overpriced given their inconsistency, it actually makes our own 7 year deals look tame in comparison.

King Brothers are 2.02 so not far off either

If he's half as good as Salmon we'll have a decent player on our hands.
I’d be happy with 80% of a King brother, 35 goals a year.

PS. Goater dropped. Not shocked was average last week.

Nothing like salmon.
Salmon became a mobile footballer when he went to Hawthorn.
He wouldn't leave the goal square after raines lit him up, when he took 3 weeks to kick the ball coming out from the centre.
Sheedy played deep

35 goals and a reliable chop out in the ruck, a better version of Soldo, I think in that situation he's a keeper. Aerobic capacity? I guess that can be built over time, there are limitations, but a 40% load reasonable.

As for Goater, he will be in and out like most kids, missing a ten metre kick happens to the best of them, you don't reach AFL level if that's the norm. I'd be judging him more by his decision making under pressure and on the run, I'd say that made up the lions share of his clangers as a junior. Could he be a rebounder? Probably, but I didn't place him in the top 10 to become a flanker, his three step burst is the premium, thtat is best suited in the centre square.

I guess with Taranto (and Hopper) we can manage Cotch and not have to play Dow

Interesting list. Why is Daicos and others from his draft class omitted from this list?
Daicos isn't eligble for Rising Star given he's played 10 games and already been nominated but he'd be top of the class if we're talking under 23 teams. I concur with Dimma, he has Judd like qualities, will be a player if he's not already.

Thanks for the explanation. There’s probably a dozen from this cohort that’s been excluded because of this criteria that are already ahead of him. It’s not a true indication of his draft class, rather the late bloomers from 2021 class vs the quality kids from 2022 class.

The only player who has achieved the same level of output in their second year has been Clarry, I think he'll cop scrutiny given his famous surname but you would be hard pressed to find a player since Judd who has the same production, the same contested game (16 last night) and the same scoreboard influence. Yes, he does get a few cheap one/twos but Gaz was the same, that's just the type of player he is, I would take him in a heartbeat if he was on the open market.

As for the 2021 draft class, I think we'll be seeing more from Johnson who was very good as sub last week, Erasmus should be inching closer & Scoop's lad Van Rooyen (albeit a swingman tall) looking AFL quality. 2021 was a terrific draft in my opinion, so much depth right through to the third round. I reckon Zac Taylor looks reasonably composed too, he's another I rated highly.

Thanks. I wasn’t talking about Daicos vs the rest though. It was in relation to Goater.

Edit: saw MJs game. 36 mins - 6 disposals, 0 contested. The knocks always been on his contested ball. Let’s see how he goes at it this week.

Goater will track a bit more slowly than some of the other draftees, it is true that North are feeling their way as to his best position, the Atley comparison reasonable but his skill set indicates a more fruitful career further up the ground. I think he's more than capable of winning his own ball, his contested numbers were very good as a junior.

As for MRJ, last season he was ranked as the best pressure forward by quite some margin, his 1%'s nearly double that of others vying for the small forward role. His contested game probably the one thing that sets him apart from Cyril, at least at this early stage. He's a keeper however, patience required & the lessons learnt from Dan Rioli extremely relevant in the case of MRJ.
