At this point in time I would take Dans kicking skills over Higgins every day of the week. While Higgins is a very smart footballer his disposal is still a little iffy. No doubt will improve.

If skills is just represented by a kick then I agree. That will always be a weaker part of his game imo. But in general Higgins is more skilled. Not only does he accumulate in 2018 more than twice as many contested possessions he also has a better disposal efficiency rate. Without wanting to put Butler down at all because I think he is a really good player, I see a lot more of a footballer in Higgins and just can't see an argument for dropping Higgins for Butler.

A real tough one this.

Love Dan as a pressure player goal sneak and his pace. The 3 amigos work well together too (Butler, Rioli, George).

But you can't drop George given his value in the air - quite an amazing player for his height to be able to compete for marks and bring them to ground (and even take the odd one or two as a bonus). That's one thing Dan doesn't have. Something possibly overlooked a bit by commentators (although oppo coaches would know full well) is George's importance to to our forward line in the air.

Dan's finishing is pretty good though and it's hard to go past his last quarter against the pies when we played them early in the year. His last quarter speed was just too much for them.

How good is Rioli then? Does it all.

Having Butler, BEllis and Lloyd in emergency is quite a luxury - covers both ends and the mid.

So you are telling me that at this point in time if you had a full fit Butler and fully fit Higgins you would take he latter? Fair enough. Butler at full flight is a critical cog in our system.

Higgins was awesome in the first final. He can’t be dropped. Butler is an important player but with the time he’s missed dropping another player for him would be a huge call. Thought it would more likely happen if there was an injury.

Trained fully with main group today for what it's worth.

Would the 23rd man also train with the main group? Would be a massive gamble to bring him in imo.

40 players were training with the main group.

Personally fully fit I would take Butler over Castagna. I'd take Higgins ahead of both of them but on the basis that one of Butler or Castagna is also in the side. Butler and Castagna are critical to the forward pressure side of our game but I think we can afford to have one of them missing but not both.

If Martin will be restricted to the forward line, then I think that kills any chance Butler had. Higlet gives us a midfield rotation, Butler doesn't.

I hope he doesn't play, is fine when fit but hasn't played enough to risk in a preliminary final. He ain't a star like Dusty or crucial like Nank.

Reckon Butler for Broad is a big chance

Butler hasnt played for 8 weeks apart from 30 odd uninspiring minutes in a VFL loss.

Too many footy fans look at Fantasy Points when picking sides.

If fantasy Points were most important Brandon Ellis would never have been dropped.

Broad is a structural player in the defence and a major part of why our defence is so good and why we improved last year.

You dont change winning finals sides for the sake of it unless there are major match up issues.

With Broad and Grimes we have two defenders who can lock down on small and tall opposition as they did against the Hawks.

Broad is going to be required as in Short and Houli we have two small defenders who are poor contested players one on one in all fairness.

Their lack of impact in this facet of the game is offset by having one of Rance Broad, Grimes and Tigga rolling off their men or playing as a loose.

I dont care if Broad doesnt geta kick or one ^@#^@^ Dream Team Point if he does his job and shuts his opposition down especially this week and hopefully the week following. He is a contester and Short and Houli are the distributors we want the ball coming out in the hands of Houli and SHort and the ball being won in contests by our 5 contested defenders.
