Welcome to the Tiggers - Daniel Butler

It was great but correct me if I'm wrong, the umpire didn't blow the whistle or signal advantage when Caddy picked the ball up so didn't pay HTB? Probably the most obvious HTB decision you'd get all season.

No whistle

Advantage Advantage

Still need to blow the whistle to call advantage. Didn't see him wave advantage at the ground, seemed to be indicating Hurley handballed it.

There’s no doubt he works his arse off SA, however there was just a couple of moments I think Dimma will be showing him on the tape Monday morning that shows he dint go when it was his time to go.

40 pressure acts, 6 tackles. Maybe he was just rooted at those moments. You can dissect every player in a game and find moments where they didn't go as hard as they might have purely because at that particular time they are out of breath.

Why?

IMO the whistle should only be blown to stop play, as in most sports that have an advantage rule.

I agree, but that's not what they do in AFL, they blow the whistle regardless of there being advantage or not.

Of course you can and they do, that’s how players improve, Butlers game was much better then recent form , however imho there was a couple of insiped efforts , not mistakes that’s the difference. Our backline makes mistakes , however it’s ever from lack of effort.

Backline does not put the manic pressure that key players in the forward line do. Energy used can limit their ability to do it at all times. You have to be realistic. They're humans not machines. If Butler was supposedly insipid in those 'couple' of instances then there's likely a very good reason for it. He's a hunter and a manic pressure player, in the top few for pressure acts every game.

My question still is Why?

I believe it's so they can call a ball back if it proves the advantage wasn't there after all. Again I'd prefer they don't blow the whistle but that'd possibly confuse spectators even more if that player were to get caught. There's no absolute right and wrong. It works in other sporting games because their rules aren't as grey and complicated as the AFLs.

They can blow the whistle when they decide to call the ball back.

So the whistle is blown to help the spectators understand the game?

Blowing the whistle is more confusing for the players. They don't know whether it is being blown against them or against their opponent. See the Richo and Mal Michael incident.

Or because their umpires are a bit smarter than the average goldfish?

Rugby and soccer handle advantage quite easily. Ref list his arm, shouts advantage and then drops his arm when advantage is over. If during advantage the team lose the ball, it will be brought back to the point of incident.

As for confusing the crowd, when they see the umpire lift his arm, they'll know advantage has been called.

Blowing the whistle should be only for a stop play. Advantage should always simply be called n waved on by the maggots.
Watching the ressies game on the weekend, whistle blown n Colonwood player guesses they might have a free n takes advantage, kicks a sausage. Oops fifty metre penalty against, rebound goal to us.

If the whistle is blown and play stops there is no issue. If the player who picks up the ball after a contest or infringement hears advantage called, he knows he's clear to keep on playing. When only the whistle gets blown it's often Russian roulette for the player trying to take advantage n the penalty can be brutal.

The approach in rugby appears the best. The ref raises hand to indicate playing advantage and sees if one occurs. If not blows his whistle and returns to the free. Simple effective and the game only stops if need be

Some good posting there. The AFL advise that the whistle must be blown so everyone knows they saw the free kick (including the crowd and umpires advisors).

Just madness how they can' wave their arms and call it back on a whistle if necessary.

I agree with you. I was just stating the reasons I've heard for blowing the whistle cause you asked for reasons.

Yep, apologies for hijacking the Butler thread but I think we all agree that there's no GOOD reason to blow the whistle unless it is to stop play.

Butler played one of the most insipid, bruise free football.

He should be embarrassed.

Yep needs to find some form in the VFL show why he deserves a spot in the 1s.
