Welcome to the Tiggers - Daniel Butler

fully agree, butler is going to get better, george is the one whom could do everything right but still loose his spot to either higgins or bolton especially if they work as hard, talent in these two is fairly high and with bolton we dont loose any pace.

For one reason or another Butler seems to divide opinions.
I worry about his fumbles, dropping basic marks and an inability to think quickly in congestion with ball in hand. He has a lot of positives but think he has a ceiling.
George almost clunks speckies, has great lateral movement and burst of speed and somehow often finds himself alone in space in the forward line. His leap is a weapon and allows him to halve contests. His ceiling is higher than Butlers IMHO but development is always hard to predict.
We all agree Rioli has them both covered?

Rioli played an extra game more than Butler this year, yet Butler finished 8th in the JDM and Rioli 12th.

I think it could be debatable.

EDIT: Rioli played two more games than Butler.

when Dan kicks 4 in a prelim', I'll debate it.

Whilst both Castagna & Butler are seen to be playing the small foward role, I see Butler going further up ground than Castagna staying closer to goal in the 30-35mtr distance where Butler goes all the way into the square during games to link up.

Both players work extremely hard to tackle and put pressure but Butler has more midfield attributes in my view

It's an interesting debate. All of Butler, Catagna and RIoli are comepting for the same type of forward position. I'm not convinced on any of them becoming long-term players at this stage however Rioli is the most likely. I put Butler ahead of Castagna only because Castagna has such a shocking kick and as a forward you need to make the most of the opportunities. Add Bolton and Stengle and newcomer Higgins into the mix and the next couple of years is going to be a battle royale.

Will have his new Number tomorrow and locker between Griig & Jack Riewoldt

Butler #7
Castagna #11

Together they are 7/11

Well deserved too!

And considering Butler had 2 injury riddled seasons before this year is a credit to him as well.Hardwick showed faith in him from round 1 and he only got better.Should be called 7 minute Dan.3 or 4 games late in the season he kicked a goal in the last quarter with 7 minutes remaining.Watch him go next season!

I see Butler and George as playing different offensive roles.

Really in fact George is not a small forward- he is an amalgam of Gunston and Carey.
Well maybe not carey.
But a majority of his scores come from short leads inside 50. He uses agility and speed to get separation.
Not many crumbed off packs as he is more likely to be making an aerial contest when he has no right or position to be involved.

Butler doesnt get air. He is the crumber and link player. They coexist because they cohabit but run different lanes.

I see Butler's weakness is concentration/endurance. Too many soft tackles and dropped chesties and frozen moments. He needs to play and play.
In two years he will be accomplished. And have 3 premiership medals.
He finds space in packs, so i see midfield time in the future. Maybe waxing with the Prince Rioli in a forward/mid coshare arrangement

Most people penalise players (including U18 prospects) harshly due to their mistakes with ball in hand. Reputations can drop to almost nothing this way.

Part of the reason we won the flag was our willingness to prescribe less weight to ball errors and more weight to what players can do instead, both with and without the ball.

Hopefully our unnatural perspective proves even more fruitful in the coming years. I suspect we're avoiding a natural human bias of some kind.

100% agree aseasyas123.
We'vegone the opposite of the baseball approach - measure errors and scores.
The focus on defensive efforts and running, plus an attack system of go like crazy seems to make both fans and players happy!

With confidence in the system i feel 2018 will be anither level

I am surprised that he is listed at 182cm?, plays a lot smaller than that, think the tape measure needs to come out for clarification.

love it 123. especially the last sentence.

Its possible our game plan could incorporate sporadically kicking away from targets into the forward 50 and create a footrace?

If we moved George onto the wing, the pattern of randomness of balls coming i50 will be impossible for opposition coaches to predict and defend.

I think we need to recruit another random ball generator for the other wing.

note: I am a big fan of George

I noticed Dan had his tracky top on while sitting on the bench in the finals.
Wondered why at the time.
Think now he is deliberately saved for late in the game when his pace against tiring opposition does damage.
Explains why he gets late game scores.

Game times on ground 83% - 76% - 80%

Not that much short of Castagna's TOG

Interestingly Chocco said on SEN that when Dan first came to the club he was the worst kick he had ever seen!

Chocco created some unconventional, (you never got anything but the unconventional with Chocco), drills using tennis balls to improve his kicking which Butler said "worked a treat"

Yep Castagna was 79/84/81
Townsend was 84/73/87
Rioli was 82/84/70 (injured very late in game)

they should have given George 24

Ahh, I get it.

Nah, I'm actually amazed (and slightly disappointed) that George didn't get 7.
