Welcome to the Tiggers - Daniel Butler

I still laugh when people reckon we'll get a first rounder for Rance if we can trade him this year

Trading is a buyer's market for a player who can't make the seniors. I'm still unsure why people find this a difficult concept to grasp.
Such overpowering logic! Never observed that markets fluctuate - an *smile* lot - frequently. Check your shares since February. But the truly astute and successful, as we have mostly been over recent years, don't flog off assets under-value. Butler we got wrong.

And in AFL. Would Butler get a game in our side in 2020? Nah, he can't play. Write 0ff. [Note: just saw Higgins has been omitted. Need to offer him up for pick 56 end of the year]

Actually think Zips, in his inimitable style, has posted well on this topic with numerous comparisons with what other clubs have obtained for their players in far superior trade deals. I find he has offered far more realistic arguments, evidence and logic than your condescension.

Rance not rated in your advanced football acumen? Let's see what happens, if it ever does.

Oh I rate Alex as one of the best ever tigers I ever saw, and I started watching in 1980.

So dunno about my acumen, but a 30 year old who hasn't played for two years coming of a knee reco is a risky bet. I doubt he'll play again to be honest - the Covid19 situation hasn't helped.

I've been wrong many times before and don't mind admitting it. Hell, I even suggested Dimma should walk after the Port game in 2016 much to my shame.

I am not committing to any definitive view on Rance as it's a total hypothetical but often a buyer will pay overs for a specific need e.g. a club thinking it's in a premiership window over the next 2/3 years if only it could plug an AA rebounding, intercepting 'once-in-a-generation' KPD into an otherwise top outfit.

I never thought anyone would offer what Sydanee did for Buddy? Nor consider what Essendumb were asking for Joey last year. Or what Colonwood gave up for Treloar? Or Brisvegas for Beams? WCE for Kelly?

But for DB we're talking about pick 56 or whatever? We should have been aware as much as anyone how valuable top SFs would/have become. Littering the Coleman now. We are the premiers 2/3 last 3 years. Not desperate. Should demand the AFL value our players in dealing.

No-one was really aware. Carlton was interested but pulled out, took Betts back instead. Hawthorn and Sydney were rumoured to be interested but never bid.

St Kilda were the only team that wanted him. Good for them, I'm sure they are wrapt with his performance so far.

Even if we got a higher draft pick we already had 43,44,46. We used the Butler pick on Biggy Nyuon.

Let’s look at the trade after the careers of Butts and Biggy have ended.

I thought the Butler trade was a classic - good player with a dip in form that can't get a game in a strong team and looks elsewhere.
Combined with the new age tigers - lets help the player get what they want cos its good karma/culture for the rest of the club.
Given there wasn't a bidding war for Butler, like a lot of non A-rank player trades, we got basically nothing.
Few more clubs out there now smacking there heads against the wall wishing they'd bid - cos both Richmond and Butler would have come at it.

Always liked Dan. Was doing well and his and Lambert’s injuries near the end of the ‘18 season hurt big time. Our ‘limp’ into September coincided with Dan’s injury.

Getting back from that injury was always going to take time and I actually thought his departure was not so much looking at the mix of established players, but more having to make a really hard call between what was known in Dan and what could be with Bolton. Really, really tough call at that moment in time.

Aside from the value of the trade for Dan, keeping Bolton was the right call.

Was sad to see Dan go, but pleased for him now (except against us of course).
PS, I personally don’t think he has the freakish agility (as opposed to speed) of Castagna and all of Castagna, Rioli and Bolton have an aerial element to their game (which Dan doesn’t) and therefore more versatile.
PPS, Papley was considered the best small forward in the game at the time. Let’s see what it looks at the end of 2021

still happy we've got aarts, might not be as quick as dan, or skillfull, but bloody puts his head over the ball when it's his turn to go, and is quick and skillfull enough. Something i couldn't say about butts, way too many soft efforts where he would just try and toe poke the ball, instead of putting his head over it. It got to the point in 2019 where he was a fair dinkum liabilty. Happy to see him doing well, but definitely not regretting him being traded. time will tell though

Back to earth for Dan this week. Only 2 efficient disposals, 4 in all. Won't get any easier next game against Port.

Edit, actually they have Essendon next week.

Payed his best ever game for Saints last week.
Played his beat ever game for RFC in the 2017 G.F.
You only get a Premiership medallion for one of those games

That is true but I was commenting on tonight's game. He's had a great year, I think Saints fast moving game style suits him but tonight showed his weaknesses a bit.

It is what it is.... with his 2020 form yes he’d be in our firsts....

did we get this one wrong, 11 weeks into the next 1~10 years it appears so, reality is it’s impossible to be right 100% of the time.

thnk rfc have Made plenty of good decisions, the people banging on about butts need to understand it’s the 8/10 rule... bound to get a few wrong, move on, just try to get the big decisions right, their the important ones!!

Stkilda paid nothing for Bulter and he has been exceptional.
What's Hills excuse?
He would be close to the most overrated player ive seen.
Besides one good run through the middle every 3 weeks
He isnt worth 2 first rounders and 600K.

Bolton basically pushed him out of the side , and i prefer Bolton even more so now than when it happened , right decision

But now its become more Butler is better than Rioli , but it wasnt that at the time , and who can honestly say they saw that coming ?

Sometimes you lose

I would have Bulter instead of Higgins and Rioli.
Higgins too slow, too small, can't kick.
Rioli, Mr Invisible. I would do more.
