Welcome to the Tigers Jacob Hopper

I’ll give it another go.

The giants have a small salary cap problem next year. You can get a clue about how big a problem it is by the fact they want a player back from us. The problem is about the difference between Hoppers salary in 2023 and soldo’s , say $400k. They can probably manage that with shifting a few things around.

Hopper is no salary dump. They would like him off the books next year but they aren’t desperate.

The much bigger issue for them is the long term with kelly, coniglio, Greene, Haynes and Whitfield on long term deals on big money. Hopper is not part of that problem as he is in the last year of his contract. That’s why they may be willing to let Whitfield or Haynes go for good deals, it provides them with salary cap relief for multiple years.

The idea that Hopper should be cheap because he is a salary dump is wrong. It’s not even close to say Grundy who has 5 years at $1 million a year coming off collingwood’s books by going to Melbourne.

If we change our minds and offer Whitfield the Hopper contact we would probably get him incredibly cheap as well.

Yeah but none of those guys can run 10-12klms a game and at the speed Hugo does . Speed + big tank = rare combo.
Exactly. Cumbo, MRJ and Sonz are very different pieces of the puzzle. We value 2-way runners and Hugo will take up a wing in time.

Sure Hugo ended the season in the VFL. He's still developing, and mature premiership players are still performing in the position he'll take in time. He has his flaws – he's still rushed – but when he runs he cuts sides right up the guts. Which is why Kingsley wants him.

Yes, but why would we want Whitfield. Especially at his salary.

It will be deaf ears on some Sin. But very well explained.

And that’s why Kingsley wants him. Yeah his kicking isn’t great but neither is Langdon’s. Or K Mac Kap’s.

Game has changed a lot the last few years. That hard running, big tank, repeat effort wingman is really important to overall structure and game plan. Attack and defend ….over and over and over. Up and down all game long.

Next year he would be a free agent. If GWS finish with pick 6 they would get pick 7 as well because of the size of the contract he would command.

That’s why Macintosh and Pickett are probably the first picked by Hardwick

It is amazing how many first round picks GWS have had over the years. They began with start up concessions like Patton, Coniglio and Greene, amongst dozens more. They also extracted former first round picks from other clubs like Ward and Davis. Then they were last for a few years, racking up more top 5 picks for a while. Meanwhile, the other clubs came hunting for their castoffs, which they duly converted into more first rounders. Finally, when they got better, along came Academy Bidding. This allowed them to bid on kids and convert all their junk picks into more first rounders.

How many players have they listed so far, 70, 80, surely less than 100? I feel like at least 30 have been first round picks. I’m not interested enough to go and do the real Maths on this but the point is…….

Surely, at some stage, they have to normalise and be treated like every other club?

Same goes for Gold Coast. Equalisation can never work if the AFL allows rubbish like this to happen.

It is a salary cap issue when next year Hoppers managers asks for $900k a Year to stay at gws. When they can’t match it he walks to the psd and they get nothing

Haven’t seen KMac miss a goal in 3 years.
His kicking is underrated.
Early days it was his decision making but on the whole he’s sorted that out. Also difficult to kick well when fatigued but under the circumstances, he’s elite

Pick 7 in compensation? That seems way overs but knowing the AFL and their pet GWS it would not surprise me.

Interesting comparison between the two. Hugo's kicking is unreliable. How much of that is inexperience (rushing, indecision) and how much is it a young player in a demanding athletic role fatiguing?
