Welcome to the Tigers Jacob Hopper

Was speaking to a player manager this morning. He was lauding the Tigers efforts to get Taranto and Hopper. From what is known among the player managers and clubs, the deal is effectively done with just a few small things to be nutted out. Finally he gave Blair a huge wrap, is widely rated as one of the best footy admin guys around. Easy to deal with and never tries to screw anyone unlike Dodoro

I think there have been a few attempts to snare Blair away from the Tige's?, I think that was part of the reason Balme agreed to move aside to allow both Tim Livingston & Blair Hartley to take over the mantle of all things footy, they work hand in hand.

As Blair has said in the past. You need to come up with deals that are win/win for both sides. That’s the key to getting deals done and wanting other clubs to work with us.

Parrot reckons his information is correct about going to Geeelong
So instead of saying his mail was wrong. He’s tell us Richmond are wrong in doing this trade?
Parrot is just a big bag sugar.

Great job, RFC.

I admire the imagination and creativity they've shown since around the 2014 draft or so in particular.

Drafts across multiple years are connected to a larger strategy.

The strategy is innovative, based on changing list factors, and addresses realities of success (ie no access to elite draft picks like Cotchin/Martin). The club has been flexible and adaptable to the regular small changes made by the AFL each year (FA, MSD, rookies, cat B, rule changes, etc)

Premierships are hard to win, so even if this doesn't ultimately lead to the desired outcome, I really can't fault the club at all for how they're approaching the task of sustaining a dynasty.

It starts at the top with the culture developed under Benny Gale that allows people to get the best out of themselves creatively and in collaboration with others. I wouldn't think a deal like this would be possible under Essendon's approach to managing people.

At the end of the day, finding innovative ways to bring out the best in groups of people is what gives meaning to winning premierships... otherwise we'll all just cheering for a piece of leather to go between a couple of sticks in the ground.

My understanding is they both sit outside of football dept in executive roles where we can pay them more than any lightweights would trying to take a throw at the stumps

Whatever we are paying Blair. We should double it.
Yeah surely his door has been knocked down. With all our coaches plus Inness and burge leaving how have we kept this guy. On very good coin or very loyal. Maybe both. North/Essendon/ saints need to throw the kitchen sink at him.

Thanks for this Post Ghost.

Great to hear b/c IMO, Blair and Graham Wright are the absolute best. They both get the trades done, seem to do it without burning bridges, no fuss, they win the player's commitment and then get the deal done.
Easy to see why Player Managers would want to deal with them. And with each deal done well, they build trust for the next deal. With very little leaks, very little commentary, no bluster and bluff.

Posted this before. IMO, Blair is second to Brendan as our most important employee at the Club.

Thanks Caesar and agree.

Balmey actually said it. That we needed to keep both guys, and so, for the Club to promote them and keep them with us, he had to reduce his role/step aside.
They then got a more senior PD/position/money - in Balmey's interview, he said we made them both 'General Manager Football Performance (TL) and General Manager Football Talent (Blair). Just good, smart move by the Club.

Me personally, I'm not convinced on Livingstone as I think our development has been below par these last 2 years, but the proof is loud and clear with Blair.

Whately is an archaic thinker
RFC are a very modern and progressive football club that think outside the box
The Old School are scared of innovation, they don't understand it

Whateley views football through the prism of the Geelong Football Club. Wonder what his views of Petracca and Oliver signing long term deals were?

If it’s not something the handbaggers have ever done it threatens him. It’s actually pretty cool to watch when he freaks out

For a professional, his raising of the Richmondy term during that bad patch this season was childish and even carrying a smug look with it.

Anyway, this is a Hopper thread.

I never thought of it like that with Whately Artball.
Archaic thinker. More I think of it, the more I reckon you are onto something with this phrase.

It's actually the same as the AFL. They do the media broadcast rights brilliantly (if more money is the No1 goal), but very little else is that innovative.

IMO the AFL actually prefer the clubs being so poorly run they have to go to the AFL cap in hand asking for help. So when a club like Richmond sorts itself out and doesn’t need the AFL to stick their noses into everything we do to give their imprimatur really annoys them
