Welcome to the Tigers Jacob Hopper

We need something to talk about in the offseason.

This seemed like fun.

Well you’ve certainly struck a rich vein of discussion here 😅

I just hope he gets a clear run at it this year and shows us all what he’s capable of. IMO his ceiling is much higher than you think.

His 2021 stats are pretty similar, not quite as good, as Tarantos 2023 stats.
For a guy who doesnt run contest to contest he gets a lot of the ball. For a guy with no hurt he gets decent score involvement numbers. For a guy with no burst he gets good metres gained.

He hasnt been fit the last 2 years, and it is his fitness, not his ability, which will dictate whether there is any chance he doesnt play every week.

I reckon it's a bit too easy to separate ability from fitness.

Two years of exposed form is a long time in football, especially in a game that has drifted away from Hopper's one wood.

At his best, and fittest, he was a limited Midfielder.

I reckon we have better options for the modern game.

I get it..
But if we go back to last year and if Lynch had a goal or our key backs and Nank could have spoiled (oh who says tall blokes cant play football and only get games because their bum and nose are too far apart to scratch both at the same time.)If if if we make F2 and the cats are the best of a poor bunch.Hopper may not be a starting mid when we have Dusty Shai Timmy and Dion. But he was starting mid for a very good giants midfield. He is good depth.
Dusty Shai and Dion dont need to do 22 weeks of heavy lifting. We want them shiny in September
When did Dimma have anyone shiny for September?!? Player management for Dimma in the last few years meant playing the Seniors only all the time!

Maybe, but we've had many youngsters get games in the last couple of years.
Sonsie Cumbo Gibbo Mujo Samsono Youngie Juddie all getting gamed with Dimma at the helm.

We know we cant play all kids cos we'd be belted and lose standards like norf did.

Just from the online clip and PRE reports, looks like he's had a great pre-season.

Have been a staunch critic but looks to have at least given himself every chance of improving on a poor 2023.

Hopefully he does.

Looks fit and healthy.

Hope you haven't hated him on 2pw3 form Leysy? He has shown he's better than that and I expect 2024 will be at a much higher level (I will go top 5 in B&F).

Don't agree on rating his 2023 as poor

Injury interrupted preseason and in season, played 16 games and was on his career average for disposals, tackles and goals. So wasn't exactly poor just didn't play up to the high expectations of everyone, based off the cost we gave up to get him.

Injury free (ie play all games) I expect he would have 600+ disposals and kick 10+ goals

Wasn't he BOG against Adelaide before he snapped his ankle in half.

Agree with this, relatively poor for the price we paid and the expectations we had but not poor. It seemed every time he got started he got injured.

Hopper is a very good AFL player. To me he is one of those players who doesn't have any particular stand out skill but he does everything well. These types tend to slip under the radar.

TBH, raw possession numbers don't tell much of a story. Like any player its how he hurts the opposition that matters.

His pressure acts, centre clearances and metres gained numbers all point to him having little impact. With and without the ball.

Equal 14th in the B&F also tells a tail.

He impacted matches like a role player, not a marquee signing.

Hopefully the cracking pre-season it sounds like he's having turns that form around.

You dont get a Marquee player on $700k which is just about average AFL salary in 1-2 years

What we paid in trade which was a top 10 pick but thats not Jacobs fault its Richmond's for finishing so low

We could easily have the next Corey Ellis or Ben Lennon

Been are common thing with our players stating Yze relationship building has been strong seems like there was a disconnection.

There was and it cracked open n 2020 in after the hub. or some say the crack first appeared re alleged Rance and Higgins incident 2019, but the 2019 flag papered over any disturbance, then Rance walked.

The club was rock solid and the players held it together in 2020 against all odds and in spite of themselves until Hardwicks excursion pretty much tipped the balance and pretty much burst the bubble.

Club and the team was never the same.
