Welcome to the Tigers - Daniel Rioli

So Dimma has sent him back to the VFL to remodel his game as a half back. Interesting move. I think he's got the game to do it and do it well.

Daniel's got to Change

“What we’re looking to [do] is evolve. The game consistently challenges us to change so Daniel’s got to change with it. We’re really excited about the prospect of what he could become behind the ball.

Been saying it for years, Baloo. Half-back exponentially easier than small forward.

Yeah, it is. But don't mistake the nuggety BP role to the breezy HBF. Nuggety Back Pocket players are the toughest in the game.

He could play half back and occasionally drift up the ground for a cameo, that would be hard to control for the opposition.

I suspect Rioli is a victim of the game changes making his role less valuable.

It could also just be a freshen-up to get some cheap leather and build confidence.

I just don’t reckon he’s been the same since the foot injury in the 2017 GF.

One of his biggest strengths was being explosive over a longer distance, which helped him apply pressure, force turnovers and lay tackles.

Hasn’t been able to do that in years.

Reckon you’re right on both counts.
I’ve wondered for a while if he could play half-back - he’s fast, tackles well, not particularly strong but neither was Bachar
Anyway worth a go in the twos and realistically he may need another position to contend for - especially if MRJ is seen as the future small forward

You wonder whether he's been told, look, Bachar's on his last legs, there's a spot there for the taking, go get it.

Like the fact he is having a change , talented player who has really stagnanted, if your not playing on edge as pressure forward you can’t compete

If last weekends vfl game is any indication, then this will be a big fail. He couldn’t do anything right. Was rightfully playing vfl.

Yeah saw Dimma say that.

If Dan is going back to half back then who is moving out apart from Bash if he retires.

Baker might be moving up the ground also.

Interesting to see how long Dan is out of the side, from Dimmas comment if they are looking to move him behind the ball then he's gonna be out for a while.

Also makes Stack more likely to be used forward as well as Parker and Moju obviously.

Sounds like what many have been mooting.

Tigers are changing their game plan on the run.

Can you just imagine the heartburn at AFL House if the Tigers change their styyle during the season and win it again ....??

There would be nothing more delicious.

Yep Dimma pretty much just owned up to it.

Another reason might be a lack of focus. Living with the Fevola's might have been counterproductive to him performing well.
The world was his oyster when he kicked 4 goals in the 2017 Prelim final.

That also seems to be a common thing people spot but I wonder if he just has a bit of a gait that can be confused with a limp, or possibly he has occasionally limped due to unrelated knocks.

The big indicator for me is training. I don't recall @caesar ever mentioning him doing too much modified training and if he had some sort of ongoing issue with his foot that would be the first thing impacted. He'd be doing the absolute minimum on the track, especially in pre-season, and doing most of his work in the pool and on the AlterG.
But it's puzzling because I've noticed him show a clear limp in games too, after leaping for a mark and landing (impact/jarring?) or being tackled strongly. Opponents often go hard at him too you notice; maybe they know something or think he's a soft target. Lightly -built.
Not sure what.

He was living with Dimma and was under the guidance of Mrs Hardwick and Dimma.

He had no distractions.

3 Premierships at such a young age probably sated his desire somewhat as well as the chicks and off field distractions.

If his foot injury was relevant he'd be doing less training and would be being managed alot more than he has over the past 3 seasons I would expect.
