Welcome to Richmond - Kaleb Smith

There'd only be about 600 blokes in the history of the game who spent the majority of their debut on the bench.

happens at the other clubs too.
Probably some sports science behind it. Most cubs when debuting spend all week spewing up and not sleeping. If they play an entire match they are on exhaust fumes.
So the smart play is to give them a short burst when the game has slowed.
Sometimes it works. Sometimes its life.

Maybe best if we blame Meehan.
That way we can keep the dumb ox with no EQ as coach for next year

it seems to be the norm these days to debut players as SUB so I'm guessing there must be method to the madness as you say.

Great effort tonight from the players, but it was diminished by the poor treatment of Caleb. I felt the exactly the same way when Kane was played as his first game as the sub. It is not as if we are playing in a prelim - poor form Richmond.

Yeah but 400 of them wouldn’t have waited until the last 17 minutes to come on.

It was a totally *smile* way to give him his debut.

You'd remember the days of the 19th man, Reds. Sometimes they didn't get on at all.

Darryl Freame didn't get on the ground in the 1980 grand final until the 25-minute mark of the final quarter.

It's about the team, not the individual.

Only you’re old enough to remember those sorts of things Methuselah.

It was a *smile* way to manage Kaleb.

We could have put him on the bench, given him a run from there and that way he would have been able to get in front of the ball when we were travelling well. Generate some confidence maybe.

Instead, we subbed him on with 17 minutes to go when Geelong were running all over the top of us. He had to pick up Close who was going crazy with all the ball they were winning. That’s a *smile* position to put a young kid on debut in.

Bad management from Yze for mine.

The club will not admit to it, but you won't see a debut player playing sub again.

If they do want to persist with it, please don't put us through the phone call with the family.

They'll do it again. Did the same for Mcauliffe too.
Dont think the club or the players will think much of it. Plentt more games for Kaleb to impact

Freame wasn't a debutant player and been a GF is different story. The disappointment is more to do with his family not been able to see their kid play much after making the effort to travel. Who knows, maybe the players are told this and inform their family. We don't really know. More games to come for Kaleb.

Yeah. Not 6.
One moment they’re just kids learning the game and being nurtured. Been hearing this all year on PRE. Next they’re grown men, like they’ve played 60 games ?

Which one is it ?

Regardless of whether he plays 300 games and wins 3 Brownlows, it was *smile* management of Kaleb tonight.

Agreed.

Same as it was shitful with McAuliffe as well on debut at Norwood.

At least he had a taste of the big time although, in my opinion, all too late in the game to show us what he has but hopefully he should be getting a starting slot next week with Pickett out injured.

Wonder how big a margin was needed before the coach deemed it safe enough to give the newbie a run around. Pretty sure there was a completely different and archaic system of play back in them days. No such thing as a rotating interchange of four players for the entire game. Just two emergency replacements in case of serious injury.

Hate the way that newbies like Kleb are made to sit on the bench for virtually the entire game and barely given a chance to be involved in the game at all, especially when there was still a game to be won rather than scratching around when the game is pretty much dead n buried. Poor bugger musta played the game a dozen times while sitting there getting splinters in his arse. All the pre game hype during the week n his family's flown in for the big parade only to find that Kleb's been given the broom n shovel to clean up behind the elephants.
Start the kids on the ground, they get the opportunity to make an impact or get swapped on and off the ground for additional instruction or to settle n think if they need it during the game and if they are truly overwhelmed they can always be subbed out at some stage if absolutely needed.
