Welcome to Richmond - Jayden Short

He’s soft compared to most players at the level. He does almost no physical work, jogs around looking for a cheap kick, often wastes the football because he has no vision and too scared to take the game on, dump kicker , stat chaser, panic merchant, too weak to break tackles and overall a liability which can be easily replaced. If Hugo has modified his game where he was playing as soft as him then Short being a vice captain and leader should lead from the front and take note.
Please trade as he only had a marginally better game Thursday night because of an inferior and inexperienced team. He will get found out again when a good forward makes him accountable.

He's a outside receiver which everyone needs ,can't have several hardcasses all wanting the same ball such as ablett ,dangerfield, selwood at Geelong which doesn't work.

And therein lies the problem. Short has taken it a little too literally this year. You still have to go when it's your turn or opponent is in the vicinity. Considering how much the ball has been back this year to me 6 games with zero tackles and 4 with just 1 (that's 10 out of 12 games) is unacceptable. Has very low pressure acts (last in 3 of last 4 games). The outside receiver needs to have elite kicking skills. He's brought the ball inside fifty 29 times this year and only 2 goal assists. His score assists are low. 55 turnovers. All his stats this year are down on previous years. Getting disposals is great but they're nothing disposals, they don't penetrate the opposition.

Last game was better for sure but needs to work on his disposal and become more damaging and more defensive minded. He's out of sorts. Sometimes it feels like to me he's just in auto pilot. Go back on mark, wait for opposition to get set, kick long to a pack. He doesn't seem committed.

When you don't have a functional midfield or forward line for most of the year, it makes it hard to pick a quality target from out of defence.

This is why you have to look at player stats in the context of the game and team.

Plays in a dinner suit.

Constantly hears footsteps and panics.

Butchers the footy.

If you’ve played any level of football - these types of teammates kill you. It’s disgraceful he still a senior player, let alone part of the leadership group. When has he ever demonstrated leadership qualities?

The sooner he’s out of here, the better. He’s taking up minutes better used on the development of the young blokes.

Another nothing game. It is only in recent seasons that people are realising what he is.

He has always been the player he is this year imho.

Would dearly love for them to play Smiffy in his place. Would also like them to play Trezise instead of Rioli at hb and move Dan to a wing.

Imo there is no place for for him especially if having one eye on the future is important.

not sure which game you watched?

There appears to be a group of supporters who want to have 23 in and under mids in our team because everyone who isn’t is soft.
I think that's a very simplified summary. I do not agree with some of the virtual abuse he is copping, and no AFL player is really "soft". It is a dangerous game. But in the context of his teammates, he is soft. In the context of being competitive in a contest and in tackles, at the ball etc he is soft.

All teams need players who can run/spread and use. You prefer most to also be competitive in a contest. eg Hugo's efforts on Thurs night.

He has been involved in a number of very poor defensive efforts this year. Even by his standards. And I think many of his critics look at a guy in a leadership position and expect more, especially given the inexeprience he is surrounded by.

Anyway, he was better than he has been, lets hope he continues to improve on his form.

It was a generalised statement not specifically about Short.

Calling a footballer soft is a pretty derogatory label. A month ago there were plenty calling Banks soft as an example but the way he put his body on the line when he was concussed showed he certainly isn’t.

I prefer to look at it with some players that they don’t have the right mix between their inside and outside game. You hear coaches talking about that as well, Steve Morris is a good example.

The other side of it is someone like Rowell who was so intent on his contested inside game he stopped playing on the outside.

There has to be the right mix but the key is that players have to contest when it is their turn and most do.

A lot of us have been bagging Short. And rightly IMO. Yes, was carrying a niggle a few weeks ago. And yes, it takes time for a player to find form again after a niggle. But I think the reason so many of us have been bagging Short is about values. His values have stunk it up. Sniffin cheapies all game then panic dumping 41m for DE% flattery.

I meant to post last week. I don't blame Short for that. I blame Yze. Short was uncoached. (As he has been for much of his career.)

He was uncoached until R13-2024. And didn't we see a new player? Yes, he still sniffed and bombed but that wasn't the hallmark of his game.

First on ball use. He stopped overcooking the ball. Quick incisive use by hand. How about that? Didn't that make a difference? Lowered his eyes when kicking at times. 6SI (av. 3SI). Jayden Short looked. Simples. He looked.

Won his own ball. Won it back. Went and got the bloody thing. 4IP 6 GBG. Meh. He was better than that. But still way up on average. Values were through the roof.

Terry Wallace stymied Chris Newman. Taught the best kick at the club to kick it backwards. Overcook it. Damein Dogwick taught Newman to run towards goal and use towards goal. Fundamental.

Damien Dogwick gave Jayden Short a happy meal every time he farted. Short loaded up on baked beans on the side. I blame the coach for the baked beans and the values.

Short still bungled on the night but mistakes are overrated. He played one of the best games of his life. Because he was coached and he responded. Bravo. This bloke showed he has improvement in him. We need him to do all that in AFL class. That'd be this week.

Interestingly he got 5 coaches votes for the Adelaide match. One of 3 players who got 5 and noone got more than 5, the others being Balta and Bolton. That means 2 of them got BOG and no votes from the other coach.

Seems like maybe even the coaches were split on the quality of his game.
