Welcome to Richmond - Jayden Short

You seem to be so passionate about it Jazzy but we all have different opinions

I liked the way he mopped up and was there so often as the outlet which is a very important role. This is his game and the one which won him the JDM. As others have said he isn't back to that form but last night was a good step forward.

I'm not sure what the problem with him having one score involvement is, he played in the backline.
I just dislike soft players. And IMO he is not a smart player a lot of times, he runs behind and calls for balls that does not create an advantage and then thumps it long to a contest. One on one he is very poor.

He can run and he can kick it a long way but he relies on everyone else to do the hard work, when it is his turn to compete he is found wanting most times.

That SI stat was wrong I think, the AFL app had everyone with 1 SI when I looked.

Understand all players have a role, and Short's isn't as a lock down defender, but his lack of physicality will always bug me. Especially when you see other players destroying themselves for the side. I would probably say the same about most "spare" type defenders in the AFL - Farrell from Port is similar, an elite user but a poor defender.

Yes I think the score involvement statistician called in sick. Every player had 1 score involvement except Miller & McAuliffe with zero.

He's not soft Jazzy, very very few AFL players are soft because they wouldn't survive in the game. He runs large distances in a game and works very hard to make himself available as the outlet and that's his role.
I have never bought into this soft moniker that people put on players who aren't the ones continually in the physical contests. You simply can't have 23 players who are in and under footballers because AFL teams need different types in a balanced team.

thought he looked good when he handballed instead of kicked. Actually has quick clean handballs that get teammates into space. More of that please. Couple soft moments and bad kicks nearly cost us tho.
Career-best game by hand.

You said it yourself - winning the hard ball is not his role. Every side needs fast, long kicking and skilled players bringing the ball out of half-back. We have Rioli and Short.

Given our depleted midfield and lack of spread then sometimes they have to dump it long which looks bad, but maybe is a valid option a lot of the time. Like we saw last night, a lot of players that people were calling *smile* this year look a lot better with a stronger midfield. And maybe the Crows aren't that good either, but you get the point.

I wasn't a fan of Short early days but he came good. Tough for many players to look very good this year. Last night he came good again.

We need to start pumping Short up as the Heath Shaw of the AFL and that GC need a Heath Shaw and not a Daniel Rioli.

He’s obviously nowhere near Shaw’s ability but we can fool GC into it.

And we’ll only ask for a 1st rounder too ! We are so easy to do business with.

I posted on the game day thread a perfect example of this from last night. Can’t remember what quarter it was but he had the ball near the boundary at half back in space and held it for a long time and finally kicked it under a bit of pressure and it went to a crows player. If you look at that you can see he was desperately looking for someone to kick to, our forwards were just not leading up and even when he did kick it towards Kosy he was trailing his opponent by a metre and that was who took the mark.
This is where we miss our key forwards like lynch and it also a role Jack played. The forwards have to work harder to provide options.

Yeah - part of it might be watching the game on TV - you can't see options up the field that much, you just see the kick land in oppo hands.

Understand what you are saying, they all have courage to be out there. I mean "soft" in the context of goes to ground under pressure, drops marks he should take because he feels a hint of pressure, and poor in one on one contested situations.

I saw Hugo do a number of things last night where he physically put himself in danger to spoil and interrupt the opposition. He is also an "outside" player but he did what was required at the time and it was critical, inspiring really. Would love to see Short do that.

We all have our favourites and biases, the short badge or number will never make my duffle coat!

I do take back Short not making any tackles. He did a great tackle on Strawde. Unfortunately he'd already taken the mark 5 seconds before he was tackled and duly kicked his first ever AFL goal at the ripe old age of 28.

I reckon there coach might know his capabilities…

Short is playing like bit of a cat in my opinion, really not committing 100% to contests.

100% agree, great outside player, works hard, but plays like a cat at times and he shirked a few 50/50s last night that looked a bit lazy.

Got involved. Not always dangerous with the amount of ball he accumulated. I’d love to see his heat map. We’re the forwards presenting?
But by no means was he the worst for us as some would have us believe.
I don’t get the angst. Selective judgement.

24 effective disposals, 4 intercepts, over 700 m gained says he was driving the ball forward. That’s his role.
*soft*cat* I find that a bit insulting.

I did see him do a short pass last night, so maybe the coaches are trying to stop the dump kick out of defence.

Sometimes, especially when the team is under the pump, the dump out of defence is the only option.

2 things though: players further up the ground need to present and we don't do this enough (bit better last night though and good to see); and you can see the better players who can see options quicker than others, they are invaluable and we need to be training players to look for options.

I would like to see him kick long into our forward line all the time.Problem is,we have a 9ft 12 guy who only raises one hand to mark,Nanks is too tired to mark when forward,Bolton is sporadic at best,Balta is back again, leaving not much to contest a mark.

I watched the game today knowing the result so it takes the emotion out of it. Shorty played well it’s just that there was too many dump kicks that go as high as they go long. Too many get picked off by the oppo or go straight to them. I wish he’d be more discerning when disposing by foot.

Yeah but the 10ft guy is generally having at least 1 arm held so can't put 2 arms up. Ryan needs to learn to lead, and Short et al need to learn to look for leads - the issue is both the delivery into the forward line and the forward line being too static.

Ryan is not always held at all
