Welcome Sam Banks

They mentioned on the tv coverage last night that Sam's dad played over 500 games. They showed the Woodsdale footy ground where Sam and his dad played a lot of their footy, what a great, scenic ground.

I googled the ground and came across this incredible football score. Sam's dad kicked 13 goals, but wasn't leading goal kicker for the day. Eighteen players from the side kicked goals.
Quite a few of the players have the same surnames as former Richmond players.

Nice of the Woodsdale blokes to let the Colebrookers have a sympathy score. Seen some big scores over the years from some country leagues as the footy clubs in some areas died off, but this one is a monstrous annihilation.

Just watched replay of the game.

Most of the kids touches especially kicks were turnover and resulted in goals or shots at goal.

Hot game for a debut. however.

Did some good efforts with hustle and pressure.

Give him another run against the Coasters on the wide ground in Perth.

Needs to use the footy a lot better though.

Sam Banks can really use the ball a level below, craig. As you would have noticed.

Banks's skills a level below (VFA) are three levels above. His application, his initial effort, his repeat effort, are barely at VFA level. He cruises, important as he is. So talented. In such humble company it would kill his pride to make a mistake. So he cruises, so aloof. Such aplomb. Movie star.

Promoted, he gave it everything. For the first time in his career he was desperate. He fatigued and he *smile* up relentlessly. He panicked. What about that new fearless thing?

Young Sam Banks failed over and again at senior level and finally entered football adulthood. Left the movie star life of imagination and entered the realm of failure. Who knew he'd be so good at it?

Football IQ? At VFA level he was a general from his first game. Football smarts? I think he knows he's smarter than his team mates. He's not stronger. He's not heavier, or even as heavy. He knows that.

Finally playing AFL level rational (smart) Sam Banks couldn't calculate his effort. Couldn't casually acquire to leave energy/effort for his disposal. He had to throw everything at the contest. He done good at the contest.

First AFL game Sam Banks had 13 touches and 1 mark. 1 SI. Wow. He looked way worse than that. 4 Intercept. 5 Turnover? Looked like 10.

Sam Banks played blue-collar and could not use. He played the opposite to usual. All of that surprised me.

At a guess, and without checking playing timelines, the sort of players that would come into scope would have been:

Graham Wright;
Doug Barwick;
James Manson;
Heath Shephard;
Paul Williams;
Colin Alexander;
Bradley Plain

Maybe one or two others.
Beats me how you came up with this. How could anyone possibly know the birth states of such a group of licorice all sorts!

I think you are being a bit unfair to Sam there.

I’ve watched a bit of him at vfl level and your description of him as a cruiser is not fair imo. He has played wing primarily and as wingers do at Tigerland he did a lot of unrewarded running. The criticism of him was that when he was not being used as an outlet he didn’t get involved enough in getting his own ball but in recent times that has changed, he has developed a good mix.

The description of him as a cruiser sounds like he isn’t putting in effort and I don’t believe that is right.

Will get better, nothing you practice/play in VFL gets you acclimatized to the insane pressure of the AFL. Tempo like nothing he has ever experienced. Will get better. So few influence game 1.

I thought he had a mare in the first half - talk about a baptism of fire, but settled in the second half. The fact he was trusted with kick ins shows that his footskills are trusted amongst the group

in his post match interview was asked about nerves

his response was huge , had trouble sleeping the night before , really felt the pressure of family and friends coming etc

his first kick out was a shocker , but credit to our team ,. they threw him the ball again

he got better as the game went on

hopefully he can get the next two games and he can settle and show us what he has to offer

Being gifted a game tomorrow after his first outing however he'll have learned plenty from last week & has deserved the opportunities to find his feet through consistent VFL performances.
I'll be looking for better decision making & ball use against the bottom side tomorrow though.

Dunno about being gifted another game. Fairly hot and intense game last week and it wouldn't have been easy trying to adjust to the tempo n pressure of seniors compared to magoos. Banksy done some nice work at times, flubbed a few as well but that's always to be expected from all players. Didn't drop the head n kept working all game and they're the main things you want from a beginner. Personally, as long as the newbie doesn't have an absolute horror show first game, reckon they should always get at least a pair of games to ensure they get a chance to adjust to the higher game tempo and lose the beginners nerves.

Just saying I don't think his performance last week in isolation would have got him another game but of course he deserves another opportunity. Just hope he takes it today.

he's a guy that captained every team he played in before getting to the RFC...

first seniors game? not going to judge him on that..

This guy is so far away from AFL quality. Whether that's readiness, or ability, I don't know.

But he should not be playing.

Must be watching a different game . Reckon he’s stuck to his man well and been courageous a few times.
